I just got the 3 red lights of death, what the hell?

I turned the machine off for a couple of minutes and turned it back on, and machine is working fine again.

what the hell, i thought once u got the red lights it was game over for the console?

There are several versions of the red lights.

I've gotten it before as well.
Like Geo said, I think there are different versions. I think mine had to do with the way the AV cables were plugged in.

So are a bunch of the 360s screwing up and dying young? Are they fixing this problem or what's up? I was thinking about getting a 360 about 6 or so months from now, but should I reconsider?

I've had mine since it was released here in Greece and I've only gotten the red lights once when I was playing the Superman Returns demo. Turned it off for a couple of minutes and it has been working finr ever since. I didnt have any problems with it before either.

Plus I dont have any of the problems, others have reported having (scratching discs, heating problems... etc)

All four lights is when the console is dead. Three just means there's a problem, usually meaning you just need to wait a while before using the console again.

Ive had every version of the red lights and its still fine.Sometimes its the power cord coming loose.Another time was when power blacked out.And a while back,one of my outlets was faulty.Still makes my heart skip a beat every time!
For the final time I'm telling y'all.
Keep that Power Unit far far away from the console(it gets HOT!)
Get an Inter Cooler.(take it off and clean the inter cooler with a can of air now and again)
Always keep it in an open area(not the entertainment center cubby)with a MINIMUM of six inches of space in every direction.
And always keep it in the horizontal position!!Seems like every time i look on youtube,people have theres in the vertical..Thats a no no,it needs that extra air flow.(don't get that vertical stand/cooler JUST DON'T!)
Check how hot it is from time to time.And just don't play it so long!If you notice,it gets hottest when theres a disc in,rather than playing a demo..But if your playing for 12 hours ,your cooking it!

No its the other way around. The 3 red lights is the hardware error, the one where you have to send it in or get a new one or just open it up yourself and try to fix it if its not under warranty. The 4 red lights is either the overheating or the AV cable not plugged in all the way. I had the 3 red light one.

Um im not sure, but i think there is a 20% failure rate with em. Im not positive on just how truthful that is, but thats what i heard. There are some positives tho. For the most part, Microsofts service is really good so they can get ur system repaired or get you a new one in no time. Also, if your system craps out and you dont want to ship it off, take it up to EB and buy the warranty service( i think its like 40 bux) and theyll give you a refurbished one for your dead one.

Yeah I got the 3 red lights, sent it into Microsoft and got one back in about a week.

I know I read in a gaming magazine somewhere that they were coming out with a new version of the 360 and the magazine said something about how people with the orginal versions would have to fork out some cash to upgrade theirs like the new version. Has this new version actually come out yet or is it still in progress? And is it even worth the buy compared to the oringal better version. I know there was a core system and a better system. But will this third version be better than the other two by far?

It has a bigger harddrive and an HDMI cable to allow for less messy wires to your HDTV, but no, you don't need to get it. In fact, if you have a Pro 360, you probably don't even want it.

The Elite is for people who don't have a 360 already.

oh crap. i forgot about the HDTV. I don't have one yet. So maybe I should wait until I get a HDTV before I even get a 360. Man, I need a better paying job.

You can get an HDTV that isnt an LCD or a plasma yet still a flatscreen.Shop around.But dont let stuff like that deter you from getting a 360..If you have regular old TV itl still work fine.Theres even a bunch of cables you can spring for.Like the Svideo cable, that looks geat

oh crap. i forgot about the HDTV. I don't have one yet. So maybe I should wait until I get a HDTV before I even get a 360. Man, I need a better paying job.

My 360 is hooked up to a regular TV. It looks great.

I got the three lights of death last tuesday. It came back for a while, then it just crashed on me, and my tv screen lit up on me like a dotted rainbow! NOT GOOD!!! Sending it away on Wednesday.
Thankfully I live in a house with my mates, so there's 3 xbox360s in the house....I put my hard-drive in one of theirs, and everythings back too normal!! YEEEEEEEEEAH!

Yep. I had mine crap out on me this past Saturday. I got the three red lights (Hardware Failure) will be sending it away to the repair center this week. I also tried that "towel trick" that's been posted all over the net, but it didn't work for me.
