Researchers aim to resurrect mammoth in five years

Can someone just tell me one good reason to reanimate/ clone this animal.

Because when other stuff goes extinct and we want/need them back it's better to have some practice in first. Science is about discovering stuff. Would they learn nothing from this?

How long until this knowledge is abused though? It will happen. Nothing with potential like this is ever used as it should be by everyone.

Why would we need something that couldn't adapt back?

Sure, they'd learn something, but is it really necessary to learn this?

This can only end in disaster, though my perceptions could be negatively coloured because last night I saw some cheesey horror movie about a reanimated Sabretooth tiger killing campers on AMC so...yea.

Ok......be honest....who wouldn't want to see cyborg Velociraptors roaming the battlefield and taking names...come on........coommee oonnn.

Cro, was a smart boy
Had a lot on the ball
But the family that took him in
Was total neanderthal

:awesome:

does anyone else feel like life is starting to reflect bad sci fi a little to much?

^ Well, we've got scientist trying to resurrect the mammoth; scientist making robot duplicates of themselves and extra points for making robots that get smarter; people running around in bad costumes claiming to be superheroes and supervillains, and nerds going ape shi* about how Bane could be more realistic in TDKR, I wouldnt say a bad sci fi film ,but more like a direct to video movie.

I think they could survive. There are cold places in the world, you see.

I love the logic of "Ehh, this doesn't benefit me so no one else on the planet should ever do it".

Where am I saying that? I'm not even being pro-human here. If we can't adapt to the changing world around us, we should go extinct too. That's the natural way of things.

We're not talking about small scale stuff here. We're not talking about life or death. We're talking about extinction and survival. Big BIG scale stuff here. We're talking world scale stuff here. Individuals don't matter, individual species don't matter at this scale.

But don't most scientists think it's just as likely humans hunted them to extinction? Either way, it's our natural brains give us the ability to manipulate other species.

Sorry if I came across as mad, I just got back from a barfight. ha.

So? We as a species may have more ability to change the state of planet than other species that we know of. We do this by doing what comes naturally, namely procreating and building shelter for ourselves. We're a phenomenally prolific species, and we have reached a population typically reserved for much, much smaller animals.

We are changing the world to adapt to us, and we adapt to the changing world. Other species don't. We're not special, we don't have any more responsibility than any other species. We're animals, and we do what comes naturally, and we survive on our ability to adapt.

Now we'll have a chance to do it all over again.
There'll be big bucks for mammoth-fur coats, mammoth tusks, mammoth burger etc....

Looks like their aim was not as successful as they hoped, or they were aimed toward more guaranteed results to spend resources on in that duration.

Now that we imagine they will successfully clone this specie of animals, how long do you figure it will take before they release them to the wilds?

I always kept some kind of hope the tasmanian tiger was still out there. A species that possibly would've still been around had we not purposely haunted them to extinction. I don't know about bringing back the mammoth, but I'm all for bringing back that tiger. lol
