Apocalypse respect for Cyclops? (finally)

Dofp was balanced very well, it wasn't all about wolverine. He was just there to get things done and I really liked that.

It definitely was a solid movie, but I guess it would have to be about perspective when it comes to "balance". They didn't balance the OT cast and First Class, and I wouldn't say the balance is all that different than past films with the exception of Wolvie not being in the pole position.

Wolverine, Mystique, Magneto and Prof X have pretty much been up front and focal in just about every movie, as they were this time around- and as they will be in the next installment.

The beauty if DOFP is that it opens up so many doors, respect for under used characters will be a must, or for sure is that well be in this forum, waiting for the latest News

Yeah it does. I think with the fresh recasts, a trusting direction and a great storyline I'm just going to sit back and wait for real news to break out. Cyc deserves his due as does Gambit.

Somehow I just don't see it happening anytime soon sadly.

Yeah I want to see a bad ass cyclops like when he had Wolverine attack him during Proteus or was it in the savage land with Sauron? where he badgered Wolverine on and did cart wheels while shooting optic blasts toying with him a bit but all to see if Wolverine was as shaken as he seemed like a true team leader
.

As much as I want to see Cyclops get his due, and I REALLY do, I don't want Wolverine to be humiliated just to do it either.

I don't understand the "lack of respect" thing. I really don't (other than Wolverine, who obviously doesn't like him that much at first). At least when I look at how the character is actually portrayed.

I get that he didn't have a ton of screentime, and that he, well, died, but Cyclops was still portrayed very well and rather faithfully in all three films. There's a precedent for his behavior in all three films somewhere in his classic characterization.

The X-Men were more or less treated like an ensemble, and still are, in this franchise.

When Scott was "sidelined" in X2, much like the comics, it was because the plot required the less prepared X-Men to band together without their leadership. It was done for a reason. And even then, his interactions with Jean were fantastic, as was the finale between them, and he and Logan, etc.

What we didn't see, and haven't seen in the franchise, was Scott developing from a troubled, unsure young man into the confident battle-hardened leader he more or less already was in X-MEN. I'm sure we'll see that in APOCALYPSE, with the recruitment of Scott, Jean, Storm, etc.

We'll get an idea when the casting is set. You can generally tell a lot through casting.

Evan Peters isn't a "name", but he's enough of a known actor around Hollywood that when he was cast as Pietro I knew he wasn't going to be a small cameo role with zero lines.

If they cast a young kid who's currently making a name for themselves, rather than a simple square jawed model, then I think we can be confident that Scott's role wont be looked over.

I want Cyclops' role to be elevated in the next film, but not through a fight with Wolverine. I would prefer that they showcase his leadership by having him just take command of the outfit during the time of crisis. We already had two films of Wolverine and Cyclops bickering; it's about time they showed them working together, as two mature characters.

Honestly, most of my enjoyment or criticisms of Apocalypse will come from how they treat Cyclops. Jean and Storm as well, since they were also sidelined in favor of Wolverine, but Cyclops especially.

This is Fox/Singer's last chance (for a good while) to get Cyclops right. DOFP was a vast improvement over the other films in terms of protagonist-balancing and Wolverine usage. I hope that continues.

I thought Jean was used well in the five films she appeared in so far. I know the Phoenix saga wasn't done so well but it wasn't like she appeared as a background character in X3.

Her portrayal in X1 and X2 was fine. In X3, not so much, although it wasn't really Famke's fault (her acting was good). Not only was the explanation for the Phoenix really lame (and not hinted at/mentioned at all for the first two movies) but she doesn't even really do anything once she becomes the Phoenix. Magneto keeps going on and on about how she's the key to his plans, but he never actually says HOW. And she spends most of her time as the the Phoenix just standing around staring off into space, including during the final battle. Then she goes nuts for like five minutes in a really underwhelming way, and the dies. For a being who's supposed to be, in Xavier's own words, "one of the most powerful mutants I even encountered" and possessing "nearly limitless potential" her role in the movie was not all that impressive. There's a rule in storytelling called "show don't tell." TLS failed miserably at doing that.

I agree...but also...I want a new actor for Cyclops. Since this movie is in the 80's I want a younger actor.

And despite all those things, she was still one of the important characters of the movie.

I think as far character development/screentime are concern. I think Jean can join the ranks of Wolverine/Professor X/Magneto/Mystique/Stryker when it comes to importance. I'm not including characters who only appeared in 1 movie. The characters I want to see join that group are obviously Storm, Cyclops and Rogue and whoever big villain they introduce in the future, well Apocalypse is a given. The rest like Iceman/Shadowcat/Beast I'm fine if they comeback as side characters.

No, she really wasn't. They talked about her being important and she was built up as being important. But in terms of actually doing anything (which is much more important imo), she really wasn't important. She was a glorified prop and a prize to be fought over, which wasn't cool.

Hmm try to take out Jean in X1/X2/X3/TW and DOFP. Then lets see how drastic the changes are.

In my opinion, she is already as important as Mystique to the series. Though Mystique only really got a boost from her last 2 movies.

As part of the new timeline, to explain different routes the writers may be going with the younger characters (than what we saw of the older versions in the OT), I hope the events of DOFP leaves some sort of effect on Charles. Like Magneto was in AoA, they should make Charles push Scott, Jean and Storm harder than (he may have) done so in the OT (we didn't see, but let's assume). Specifically Scott since the OT version was just... Not the Scott I wanted to see.

With a young cyclops there is finally room for character development and it's very obviously what sorta development, how he becomes the leader, what makes him leader material and his romance with jean

I think jean has had good development through the series, I'm glad storm had a good performance in DOFP but even her and cyclops needs a little more fleshing out, I think this will happen.

I think Famke was fan-favorite character of the series, and directors and writers seem to knew that. I want more Storm and Scott now :yay:

She's the most developed female character in the movie series in my opinion.

i don't think jean was incredibly well developed, i bet she is mostly seen as wolverines love interest beyond anything else

I hope they make Wolverine a Horseman though, just so we can avoid the typical masculine bickering between Scott and Logan. I think if they made Wolverine a Horseman, it would be perfect because he wouldn't be the main protagonist, but still be pretty important as a character because Xavier and Hank would want to save him since he helped them out a decade earlier, effectively avoiding an apocalyptic future.

But yeah, finding a new trio (or quintet, if we include Tatum and whomever plays Nightcrawler) is of the utmost importance in order to keep the series going post Fassbender/Lawrence/Jackman. (Even though I would love to have Fassbender be Magneto forever)

I do think Singer cares a lot about Jean though. The Phoenix saga was being prepared since the first movie, and though Ratner didn't stick the landing, you could tell that Singer was building towards something tremendous with Jean.

Plus, it'd give Jackman a chance to take the character in a very different direction. Being a "villain."
