Ridley Scott appears to have found his next project after Prometheus. Deadline reports that he's negotiating to tackle Cormac McCarthy's original screenplay, The Counselor.

McCarthy, known for the novels-turned-films All the Pretty Horses, No Country for Old Men and The Road, wrote The Counselor specifically for the screen. It tells of a present-day Southwest lawyer who gets in over his head in the drug trade.

Scott appears likely to make this his very next film, though he has also been linked, in the recent past, to Forever War, Monopoly, Gucci, a Gertrude Bell biopic and a spinoff of his own 1982 sci-fi classic, Blade Runner.

I bet this will be cheerful stuff.

I love McCarthy.

Consider my ticket bought.

Absolutely...

Cormac McCarthy + Ridley Scott = two of my favorite things. They go together like peanuts 'n' butter.

Seems a little derivative of No Country. McCarthy is god in author form, though, so I'm sure it will be great.

I love Scott and McCarthy but HELL, when is that Blade Runner spinoff coming out??? I WANT IT!!! And it's not like Scott's a young man either...

Those are my thoughts to.

I'd prefer to see him tackle his idea of the sequel to BR if Prometheus is a success. I mean it would be a nice parallel of what he did when he was younger. First Alien and then Blade Runner after. :)

God forbid he do some exciting new project that isn't tied to his work from 30 years ago.

i agree. i rather watch a Scott original movie that is not based ona a known man, prequel and sequel to his scifi years.

I'm all for originality in Hollywood, but I gotta agree with craig here: it would be awesome to see Ridley Scott retrace his Alien/Blade Runner journey 30 years later.

A courtroom thriller written by Cormac McCarthy and directed by Ridley Scott?

Take my money now.

I'm right there with you.

It seems that Ridley is committed to making this project as his next after Prometheus. And that perhaps Fassbender will be the lead.

From Deadline:
I’m told that Ridley Scott has now committed to make The Counselor his next film. Other sources tell me that Scott has been talking to his Prometheus star Michael Fassbender about playing the title role. While a formal offer hasn’t been made, I believe there’s a high likelihood that Hollywood’s hottest actor will star in the film.

The idea of Ridley doing a project penned by McCarthy that's also an original one? This is automatically, a must look forward project.

Per Deadline, Fassy is in for the lead. They're aiming for a May production date and looking at the likes of Pitt, Cooper and Renner for the villain.

I want to see Pitt take the villain role. :awesome:

I'd be all for Pitt as the villain.

With the addition of Fassbender, now my interest has piqued. And yes, I would love it if Pitt was cast as the villain.

Oh man this is a dream. Cormac MaCarthy's writing without the annoying lack of punctuation and grammatical structure. Ridley Scott is the last of 'the Beards' who hasn't lost his drive in my opinion and lastly Dat freakin' Fass!

As for the villain, I think Bradley Cooper has an untapped dark side I'd be very interested to see.

BREAKING: JEREMY RENNER, JAVIER BARDEM AND NATALIE PORTMAN IN EARLY TALKS FOR RIDLEY SCOTT'S THE COUNSELOR

With a May start date looming for the Ridley Scott directed / Cormac McCarthy scripted thriller The Counselor, already confirmed star Michael Fassbender is going to be getting some company on the billing block very soon. And Twitch has learned who that will likely be.

Stories began circulating in February that Javier Bardem, Jeremy Renner and Brad Pitt had all expressed an interest in playing the role of Reiner - the villain of the piece - and Twitch has learned that Bardem and Renner are both having preliminary conversations with producers about the part. It would appear that Pitt is out of the running and we are told that Bardem - who has already proven that McCarthy's style fits him like a glove with his part in No Country For Old Men - is Scott's preferred choice. Barring a major schedule issue expect Reiner to be one of these two men.

Further, Natalie Portman is in early discussions to take on the role of Laura - the female lead of the film. Portman has chosen to keep a low profile of late, preferring to spend time with her family, but obviously this part is juicy enough to entice her back to work. Portman is also said to be Scott's leading choice for the part.

None of these conversations have led to formal offers as of yet but - as was the case with Fassbender - when it gets to that stage it's going to happen very, very fast.

I love Bardem, but casting him as the villain may draw more comparisons to No Country for Old Men.

Also I read a review of the script online and Javier doesn't fit Reiner's descriptions unless they do a minor rewrite.

Plus after Skyfall, Javier is being typecast as the villain type when in all of his roles in his career has been diverse.

I hate how they say "villain". It's not really a villain role. The only one close to being a villain is Malkina and she's more of an anti-heroine.

Get Demian Bichir .

Is that the role Natalie Portman will be playing?

No. She's up for the "Laura" role.
