Ridley Scott's "Alien: Covenant" (Oct 6, 2017) - Part 3

The problems that most people actually had with the last film (stupid characters making stupid decisions for purely plot reasons, unanswered questions and/or plot-holes, poorly-written script, bad dialogue, etc) are still here in this film. Heck they're worse here even.

Trying to boil it down to "people didn't like the last one because no Xenomorphs" is totally misreading what the complaints actually were.

To me and many others, it looks a lot like potential discarded ideas for his Alien 3 film. Granted, on a much lower budget.

Well that CGI is impressive as **** for low budget. Pity I don't have Steam.

Apologies if I set anyone off with my Xenomorph comments! Was just spit-balling, and thinking about it. But yeah, I think you guys are right. This movie still screams fast-tracking to me. But hey, I really liked it.

Scott will say the reason people didn't like this movie is because it didn't have enough of the Prometheus characters in it, so Shaw will be brought back for Awakening.

Still hoping the 3rd movie will be made just to end the story.
It is still a better prequel trilogy/duoligy than the SW PT.

I actually hope they don't do 3rd movie, not with Scott. It's just sad seeing the man who made Alien do what he has done in Covenant.

At this point I think it would be easier to do the original idea for Alien 3 (Blomkamp's idea?) and use David as a the way Aliens get to Earth

Blomkamp's idea was a direct sequel to Aliens w/o taking Alien 3 and 4 into account.
The original idea for Alien 3 ( planet prison + religious people ) evolved a lot and what we got are mixed idea from various scripts.

I had a great time in the cinema watching this. It was actually my first time to see an 'Alien' film on the big screen. I somehow missed Prometheus and I was a bit too young to see Resurrection in 1997.

From what I've heard about "Awakening" is that it's set before Covenant so we should actually see what happens to Shaw and the engineers.

Maybe the original plan was to have Awakening be the next film but someone at the studio said "No we need the Xenos back" and they swapped them.

Meh I'm just speculating

But yeah this just makes me even more mad that we got Covenant instead of a true sequel to Aliens with Blomkamp.

Agreed. I'm actually in the minority in that the I didn't think the characters in Prometheus were too stupid -- at least not the point where it bothered me very much. But boy were they a mess this time around. The cast was competent and did their best with what they were given (IMO) but the stupid was flowing strong in this one.

This might be forgivable but what makes it worse is that on top of that a lot of their behavior was just inconsistent and nothing resembling arcs were set up and carried through. We get Oram complaining that he didn't get the captaincy because he was too religious -- which I guess just HAD to be in there because of the religious/faith motif -- but it's clear from all of his behavior that it was probably because he has horrible leadership skills. Karine goes from screaming to be let out of the room with the emerging alien but then immediately goes and hugs the guy it is about to burst out of. We get drama surrounding Tennessee wanting to take down the ship during the storm for emotional motives but then everything turns out fine so really what was the message/point in that?

The folks in Alien weren't the bravest (Lambert) or strongest-willed leaders (Dallas) but they weren't complete idiots and they had consistent characterization. And even in Prometheus at least the characters had personality.

I've seen a lot of comments/reviews saying that this film suggests Scott is only as good as his script and I think they may have nailed it.

This movie was a mess. I really liked Danny McBride's character at least. I usually can only take him in small doses and I thought he did well here. It was different for him.

this is what we needed for this franchise because Alien Covenant from previews looked tired,been there done that for the alien franchise it wasn't anything new or fresh probably a big reason why it bombed

Just saw John Schnepp of Collider Movie Talk calling us dumb for getting Furious 7 and Fast 8 to a billion. And if you complained about Convenant then "Eff you"

How about this Schnepp, Furious 7 and 8 did their job better than Alien: Covenant. They actually entertained with their looney tune madness where as Covenant tried to pick up a fumble and fell on it's face. Get over yourself buddy. That's why i stopped watching that. I loved all those guys but their egos have gotten a little too big.
