Ridley Scott's "Alien: Covenant" (Oct 6, 2017) - Part 4

Fox made these movies distributed them etcetera shows that they supported Scott vision. And Scott vision they are not in continuity

Neither is Alien which makes them not in the existing continuity either. Unless we're just going to pretend that everything in Alien showing just how old that wreck is didn't exist.

Certainly not the movies, no. But Fox is greedy and incompetent so they forced that crap onto us and ruined an otherwise good concept.

Finally got around to seeing this and it was just as bad as Prometheus.

My question is, if the Aliens as we know them were created in the future, how then did the Predators in AVP bring them to Earth in the past, as shown when they bring them to the Inca/Aztec like civilizations to battle them....?

Despite the arguments on canon here, I’ve basically come up with a work around in my head. Since we see carvings related to the Aliens in other media, I think David didn’t necessarily set out to create this perfect organism, but to recreate it. The Aliens are the result of constant testing to recreate something from long ago.

Trying to make sense of the Alien continuity and the garbage Ridley Scott committed is a lost cause.

However, if you really want to believe in David as the creator of the Xenomorphs, than you really just have to view the Alien vs. Predator films as silly side adventures that aren't canon. Just like the xenomorphs encountering Kyle Rayner, Hal Jordan, and Judge Dredd. Though I will say Dredd vs. Aliens and Green Lantern vs. Aliens were generally fun stories.

Yep, you’ve pretty much got to throw everything out Ridley Scott wasn’t involved in.

Which, let's be honest, isn't a huge loss in the first place. Unless you like the mythology ideas introduced by the AVP movies. I guess some of that is interesting in the idea that maybe Weyland Yutani knew things about the Xenomorph species before the events of the 1979 film.

:wow: This is fantastic, can't believe they did not put that into the movie.

Except why would the Engineer actually stop and take the time to go on a long-winded monologue like that?

Finally saw it tonight, only a year late lol.

I thought it was really average, way too much focus on the Synthoids, a set of human characters that were dumber than a teen slasher flick cast, and overall it just wasn't all that interesting or exciting and I didn't feel it added anything of note to the mythos.

I will say Katherine Waterson did the best she could with what she was given and I think with a better script she could have been a great lead heroine, and the 2 big set pieces at the end were pretty good, especially the escape on the Lifter sequence.

6/10

Speaking of Alien, anyone know of any Alien Day theater showings anywhere? Kinda disappointed that FOX announced Alien Day for 2018 a few weeks ago but I haven't seen any further news from them since.

I am watching this right now... David Skywalker, the Last Android. :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

I didn't think anyone could get dumber then the Prometheus crew, and then the first major action setpiece happened. :lmao:

This movie is making me sad. Scott and the series feel so old, just using the exact same beats for everything, that I don't feel anything during these movies. Its so weird.

Now David is cutting his hair and teaching himself how to play the flute... what am I watching? :funny:

The Engineers were unevolved dorks, capable of the most amazing space travel.

Fassbender looks noticeably older.

The CGI used for a lot of these shots is just plain awful. The budget cut was real.

"We didn't leave Earth to be safe." Tennessee, you ain't lying. :hehe:
:
They were attacked by a super fast, super sneaky alien creature. So let's just bathe alone...

The shower scene was a major red flag to me when they put in the trailer. It's lowbrow, even for a movie like this.

And they did the equivalent twice. I couldn't believe it, holy ****. :funny:

There is a lot of innuendo there, I was legitimately saying "what" out loud multiple times, while my brother was just laughing his ass off. I have never seen a scene so dedicated to a *********ion joke.

If one was made, I would watch it. I love the series. But, Prometheus and Alien: Covenant were both visually stunning, but had super dumb characters and plot points (outside of David...I liked him in both films).
I completely agree Prometheus is for the most part, rather pretty. But Covenant? The reduced budget is all over that film. It has some decent shots late with the alien, but outside of that it comes off very small, with an obviously low budget, without much in terms of creativity to energy to really change that.

I'm still annoyed they cheated me out of the "Shaw and David's Head's Adventures in Space!" movie that the ending of Prometheus promised me.

Agreed, I actually liked Prometheus, and at least it got you excited for what was coming next. After Covenant, I genuinely didn’t want to see another movie in the franchise happen.

Prometheus is just promises, though. On its own, it’s a very frustrating watch. The concept just doesn’t go very far with me. Covenant, jumbled though it may be, delivers on its premise of mad scientist David luring people into his castle to experiment on them.

Covenant is just a poor version of Alien. With a bland female lead.
