RIP Harry Kalas

At least he died when the Phils were Champions.
And for those who never heard him the final call of the WS:

He was also the voice for all those NFL films productions.

I've spent the 21 years of my life listening to him call Phillies games. He has been a part of most of my greatest childhood memories, watching games with my brother and family. I met him and Richie Ashburn when I was about 9, the summer before Richie passed.

He was a great announcer, who could build the drama of a game, and unlike announcers like John Miller and Joe Morgan, he actually understood the game. He didn't talk to the audience like we were dumb, he assumed we knew the game and spoke to us like fans. Phillies games won't ever be the same without hearing Harry's voice making the calls.

Baseball lost its voice today.

So..... Joe Morgan, a hall of famer and one of the greatest baseball players of all time didn't understand the game? Eh... this dude sucked at his job... that winning call that was posted earlier was the worst call I ever heard.

Joe Morgan and John Miller, even Tim McCarver are BAD announcers. I've played baseball my whole life. I play college baseball right now. I know this game. I know people that know this game.

Joe Morgan, is a moron. People who play baseball at a high level, and watch a lot of baseball find him irritating with his inane comments. He says things that are common knowledge to even casual fans of the game.

Morgan was a Hall of Fame PLAYER. He is not a Hall of Fame announcer. Harry was a Hall of Fame announcer. That means he was one of the best. All of his calls are amazing.

Listen to his call of the Phillies winning the '93 pennant. Listen to his call of the '80 pennant. His call of Michael Jack Schmidt's 500th HR, or Thome's 400th Homerun.

His call of Todd Pratt's walk off vs the Red Sox, Michael Lieberthal's three-run walk off HR vs the Pirates after they entered the frame down 7-1, Millwood's no-hitter, Terry Mo's no-no, Tommy Greene's no-hitter.

He can build the drama of a play and give it a great pay off. Just the way he speaks and his description makes him a Hall of Famer...and then there is his actual voice which there will never be another like it again.

It was BECAUSE Harry wasn't allowed to broadcast the 1980's World Series that the VERY next year local broadcasters get to do the playoffs on radio. That was because fans wanted to hear the GREAT Harry Kalas give the call.

His voice is instantly recognizable. It was iconic. And not only that, but his personality was one that captured a whole city and fan base, in one of the biggest sports markets in the world....in one of the toughest cities to do anything in, in the sports.

And I'm not biased because I was born in Philadelphia and grew up listening to Harry. I hate Chris Wheeler...he's a Philly broadcaster...I don't like T-Mac, Tom McCarthy....

But I loved Harry Kalas, Andy Musser, Larry Anderson and Richie "Whitey" Ashburn.

Harry is truly one of the greatest of all time.

By the way, http://www.maxim.com/The10worstbroadcastersinsports/articles/2/24558.aspx

Maxim Magazine did a list of the TOP TEN WORST BROADCASTERS in Sports...guess who WAS in there, and guess who WASN'T.

You're guy is said to be one of the worst in the biz...my guy is in the Hall of Fame....just quit man.

Horrible announcer. RIP though.

seriously, whats the point of being a total *****e and coming in to a memorial thread just to rip on the guy?

Great, you didnt like him and you're entitled to your opinion, but why do you feel the need to spout off about it in a thread where people are paying respect to a man that millions of people, not just Philadelphia, loved? Just so you can make yourself feel different and contrarian?

You sound like a moron....he's easily one of the best sports announcers ever. Easy. Whether it's Phillies Baseball, Jaguars games, NFL Films, or Inside the NFL the guy was great.

dude's just trying to make his e-dick look bigger. that or he's got a stiffy for Joe Buck

He died in the announcer's booth right??? A lot of people say they want to pass-on doing what they love, but that seems kinda' sad.....
