I have started ripping my movies (ones I have legally purchased) to my computer, using a nice little program called Magic DVD Ripper.

I can then use VirtualDub (a video editing program) to edit out all the credits at the end, to save space.

I put them on my NAS device.

I world in my home office alot, this way, I have .AVI files I can watch at the touch of a button, no DVDs involved. I am thinking of trying to figure out how to stream them to my DVR for my TV....

Any thoughts?

I'll have a look into it :)

My friend does something similar, but that's to a PS3, not a DVR. My DVD player has a USB port, so I can watch films straight off my flash.. but that's not what you're after is it eh? :D

I'll see what I can come up with and report back, mucca ;)

How good is the free trial version of the Magic DVD Ripper? Would I be able to fit 2 movies on one 4.7GB DVD using this program?

I have owned a copy, not sure on the trial

So I downloaded the free trial version of Magic DVD Ripper & it let me use it about 3 times & then the free trial was over.

Actually found a site that explains ripping them using OpenSource software.
Take a look at this....

I am trying to RIP one of my DVD's now, and will tell you what happens...
Using DVD Decrypter first to rip it to my Hard Drive in VOB files..
Then using AutoGK to try to put it all together in an AVI file.

Yup...have about 75 movies and documentaries that I would love to watch on my PC and not have to use a dvd player or fool with the disc.

I want to see if I can stream then after I do this, but that is another matter.

I havent looked at the entire movie, but it seems to work, just takes awhile.
On a Pentium 4 computer that I use for little things like this, and basically playing videos, it took 5hours and 30minutes to rip roughly a 1 hour and 10 minute documentary....really slow...yes its free...but for 5 hours...its to darn slow.

Bumpin this thread. I'm interested in getting DVD ripper software, and was wondering if Malice found any cool new free ones. If not, is Magic DVD Ripper still working well? Do you recommend it?

dvd decrypter
and
Dvd Shrink

are all i ever use :)

Lets just throw this out there, anyway to rip the movies you want on the computer and add them to itunes for the ipod touch?

i use tversity to stream music and videos from my pc to my xbox since my xbox is my primary dvd player...

Thanks for the recommendation, both of the programs work very well. I'm not quite sure why I need both DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. They both seem to do the same thing. Also, once I have it backed up on my computer, how do I watch it?

if its all .vob files on your computer after using lets say DVD Shrink, then what I do is use Divx (converts to divx .avi's) to select the biggest .vob file make sure its gonna compress it to 700mb (unless film is long, then I'd go for like 1.4gb) then just sit back & wait while Divx compresses it.

I use Dvd Dy to make a ISO copy of the dvd onto my pc, extras and all. then i use dvd shrink to re author the dvd into just the movie (saves alot of time and space)
