Rivers Cuomo Says Weezer Is 'Done'

yup. i've never been a big fan of their music. i guess we'll wait and see if their new stuff is any good. honestly, i'm not even sure if the rumor is true, it's just something i heard from somewhat of an "insider" in the scene here. it could all be hocum for all i know.

Beware of "insider" rumors. I've been involved with the music scene in my town for years and there are always so many different rumors going around that are detrimental to one band or another, it's ridiculous. Most of them get started by rival bands who want to undermine each other.

yeah, i tend to take them with a grain of salt. this one was from someone with ties to saddle creek, though. that's the only reason i give it any weight at all.

Rivers Cuomo Says Weezer Is 'Done'

The Associated Press
NEW YORK -- Rivers Cuomo says that, for now, Weezer is "done." Cuomo, the band's bespectacled songwriter and frontman, told MTV that while he remains in touch with his bandmates, "we've never mentioned getting together.""Really, for the moment, we are done," he said. "And I'm not certain we'll ever make a record again, unless it becomes really obvious to me that we need to do one."Weezer has released five albums since forming in 1993. The group took a considerable break between 1996's "Pinkerton" and 2001's self-titled disc (typically called "The Green Album"). The band's last release was "Make Believe," in 2005.

The liner notes of that album led to conjecture that it was Weezer's last. They included a quote from a parting soliloquy in Shakespeare's "Tempest," the playwright's last play.
Cuomo, 36, said he has been writing songs, but said, "I don't know what'll happen with these songs — if anything. ... I certainly don't see them becoming Weezer songs, and I don't really see the point of a solo career. So we'll just have to see."

Jim Merlis, a spokesman for Geffen said that the label had no official response, but did add Cuomo has made similar statements in the past.
Cuomo recently graduated from Harvard and married his longtime girlfriend, Kyoko Ito.

well i gotta say that sucks i liked them.

Oh noes.

Well, on the bright side, Rivers says this every few years anyway.

Haha, as sad as I would be were this true, MTV very often takes Rivers' comments out of context or are is just plain wrong. While I guess it makes sense to break up (Maladroit was miserable, Make Believe had a few decent tracks) I have a hard time believing the situation is as bad as the article mentions.

First of all, I don't really think the band hardly speaks to each other anymore. He's already written a few new songs (Pig, Piece of the Pie, Our Time Will Come, Love Songs). If only he'd open Weezer up to let Brian write some songs (The Space Twins album was pretty good) it might diversify their records a bit.

Also, they have a seven record contract. They've only released five.

do people even know what it means to sell out? apparently not! selling out is when you comprimise the quality of your music for the sake of money.

Can't say I'll miss them.

and about Franz Ferdinand, you just said it yourself, the same band, playing the same songs with no evolution, selling out also means not straying from a tried and true formula that interferes in the way of the band's natural evolution

They are the same band, as people. Their music has evolved greatly. Listen to their first single, and then their most recent L. Wells. Tell me there's no evolution.

Hahaha.... That's ridiculous to say.

Yeah... Some of those bands don't exist anymore. What of it? They didn't sell out. I was citing examples of bands that haven't sold out... So they belong on the list.

Also... I don't define "selling out" as signing to a major label or becoming "mainstream"... I define "selling out" as changing one's sound to create more cashflow and compromising the art..

- Franz Ferdinand haven't done that. Listen to their EP's and their most recent LP... They are the same band... playing the same tunes. And if anything, they've gotten better.

- Coldplay (The most successful band on the list)... Excuse me... But Coldplay have created something of substance with each new album they put out, it seems. They haven't become over-produced or changed what they're about one bit, in my opinion. In fact... a lesser band would have sold out by now.

- Bloc Party. Born to sell out? Blahahaha. That's ludicrous. They're one of the few political punk bands that hasn't (::cough:: Green Day ::cough::)

- Arctic Monkeys... This one I don't even understand. Why would you call them sell-outs? They've only released one LP... an independent one at that... and have made it abundantly clear that they're not about the hype.. but about musicianship and the music.

And as for listing bands I like... How could you possibly know what I like? And what would posess you to say that I'm randomly naming them off?
Because there are plenty of bands that I enjoy that HAVE, in fact, sold out. Weezer being one of them.

J. Alba's Lover said, "Who hasn't sold out?"... and I responded in kind.
None of the bands on my list are sell-outs.
End of story.

Weezer didn't "sell out"; Cuomo was just trying out new sounds. and you don't know what was in his heart anyway so don't be a b*tthead.

When your music appears in a commercial, you've sold out

Ah come on you know you people would damn well "sell out" wither its movies or music. plus you gotta think about your future and also if you hsve a family you gotta think about theirs aswell. Imean you can't play at dive bars all your life and possibly keep with a label that can't really afford to pay you anything. So if a big label offers you that you better say yes. not for yourself but for better of your familys future.

Hmm.

I wouldn't change my style just to sell more (example: a metal band from Seattle called "Sanctuary" broke up in the early 90's when the vocalist and drummer refused to become another grunge band).

I wouldn't have my music be used in commercials.

I wouldn't create a "radio friendly" song.

But since I'm not a musician, this **** don't apply to me

The only songs of theirs I know/like are Island in the Sun and Hash Pipe

yeah you say that now. but when they flash enough green at ya your agree.

money rules everything. everyone has there price whether they wanna admit it or not.

cause i certanily can tell you i wouldn't wanna be dirt poor my whole life. especally if i was alread y to start with.

Money just pays the bills. It's doesn't bring joy, peace, personal integrity, ethics, or other "intangibles"

And like I said, "I'm not a musician" so why the **** do you care what a non-musician says what he would or wouldn't do?

Yeah excatly cause everyone has them. oh you don't think millions of dollars can bring you joy?

and i wasn't just talking about musicans but actors as well.

i mean would you rather have a 9 to 5 hour job with piss more wages or a job like musican or actor making more in a week than your make all year at a normal job.

You need money to live. Unless people just hand you stuff for free.

I'd keep my job and do the music stuff on the side.

Hell, before Richard Christy became won a job on the Stern show, he was an electrician. He would then take time off when a band called Iced Earth went on tour or recorded an album

I think you're confusing selling out with being successful. Selling out is when you change your sound and image to sell more albums. That's selling out.

The Shins have not sold out. Weezer ****ing did.

I liked them too. There old stuff better than there new stuff. Same with Green day their old stuff is better.

A band can be successful and not have their music appear in a commercial.

Led Zeppelin was a successful band long before their music was used to sell a Cadillac.

Lynyrd Skynyrd was a successful band long before their music was used to sell fried chicken.

U2 was a successful band long before their music was used to sell ipods

I know, but it seems alot of people think that when someone's music is heard by many, they are automatically a sell out, which we know isn't true.

What the hell is up with bands breaking up all of a sudden. Sheesh.

They were a really good band, in my opinion. I own Weezer (Blue) and Pinkerton in my CD collection and both get listened to regularly. It's ashame that they've called it quits "for now".

And what is up with all this "selling out" garbage?

The second you form a band, have a show, and charge people money to SEE your show, you're selling out. Because if you truly don't want to be a "sell out" you'd not charge people money to see you play music if that's what you loved to do so much.

But seeing that the almighty dollar makes everybody's head spin, even average joe schmoe who would eat dog crap off the ground for a million dollars....are sell outs.

Everyone in this thread is a sell out. If you've ever gotten a full time job, you've just sold yourself old to some company. We're all sell outs, so lets stop pointing fingers at guys who can make good music and make money off of it. :)

The only true people that have not sold out are bums. They wasted their education, if any, and will be damned if they work for the man. :o Entreprenuers, the lot of them.
