Robert Downey Jr. Is Doom - "Same task, new mask"

Being creatively bankruptcy isn't a risk, lol! Your casual movie goer isn't going to care that they did the least interesting version of Doctor Doom that we could have gotten. All they will see is RDJ's name on a poster. It's laughably risk adverse
Of course it's a risk, because an audience becomes more cynical and your films become less relevant. If you want to become another Transformers franchise where it makes a ton of money but everyone wonders how (cynicism), then just keep taking the easiest path of resistance and audiences will turn their backs on you a lot quicker then you think.

I mean, one could also argue that you can make a more faithful adaptation of The Lord of the Rings trilogy but ain't nobody touching those movies for a long time.
I mean....we got 3 Spidermans within a 10 year range...

And the reaction in Hall H only reinforced it.

I'd have sold my soul to see the look on Feige's face if RDJ had revealed himself to total confused silence in that room.

I wouldn't call Hall H audience casual.

I dont agree with this assessment at all. I agree in the way that the franchise may lose its audience, but I don't see this particular move is in anyway a risk. The mentality behind why this is being done is as risk adverse and lazy as it comes.

That's the comic-con version of cinemascore, where its so weighted towards a specific fandom, that an A- is considered a poor cinemascore. People in Hall H go to scream and be excited. Prisoners of the moment.

The whole thing is a mess. We've had 23 MCU projects since 2021 and only four of them (Loki S1&2, Quantumania and Multiverse of Madness) really set up Avengers 5 & 6. And Loki & Quantumania have now been thrown out with the bathwater so they end up having to scramble at the last hour.

And people really didn't like the second iteration. Also, leading up to Civil War a lot of people were going "Another Spider-Man? Again?".
But look at how much love Tom has now. ANd how people were foaming at the mouth for another Andrew lead film...

Disney paid them then. :o

Seriously, I think that even if a lot of them weren't down with the idea of him as Doom, it's still just a knee-jerk reaction that they would cheer Downey at Hall H no matter what.

They paid a lot of money to be there and waited like 12 hours in line. They're gonna cheer no matter what.

Could they introduce another Doom after Secret Wars? Sure. But will they? Doom is not nearly as important of a character as Spider-Man in terms of value. Neither the studio nor the GA will be craving for another take on Doom any time soon after Secret Wars.

I think with enough backlash, they could do a 180 and announce something different. HIGHLY unlikely that happens, but Marvel hasn't been afraid to pull the plug on something entirely and start from scratch. Daredevil: Born Again went through a massive overhaul because of fan demand and it also sucked in it's test run.

Doubtful. The majority of reactions outside of comic book purists has been positive, so unfortunately Feige has no reason to backtrack this. He and the Russos are locked in.

I dont see us being able to change the main event like what happened in the WWE with the Wrestlemania 40 main event.

OMG, RDJ IS TOTALLY THE ROCK IN THIS ANALOGY!!!!!

I don't like this choice. The only way this will work for me is if Downey is wearing Doom's mask with heavy scarring on his face and he speaks in a heavy eastern European accent. Do I think that Disney will do that? No, I feel like they'll want to show his face otherwise they could have had anyone with a great voice play the part.

It went through an overhaul because the writers' strike happened and Marvel had time to actually think about what they had just filmed. If the strike hadn't happened then nothing would have been changed.

RDJ would lose 70% of his MCU cool points accumulated over all these years if he played a Doom that never puts his mask on.

What if it's a Doom who constantly makes quips? Maybe he'll refer to Thor as Shakespeare in the Park again. :o

Maybe, the MCU should have ended with Endgame, this is very silly. I would rather watch X-Men 97 on a loop rather than watch Avengers Doomsday.

I love RDJ & all but I don't like the casting, as several of you have all said, it just reeks of desperation from Marvel & at a wild guess, likely at the cost of seeing one of the best villains Marvel has in their back pocket in his full glory.

I say that because even things as simple as his appearance, if you're bringing RDJ back into the fold, you can almost guarantee he'll be seen constantly maskless & scarless otherwise what's really the point? There's likely going to have encounters with characters that knew Tony so there will be no doubt a bunch of spiel about how they look similar. That's also assuming that this isn't some sort of Tony Stark variant from the multiverse, which is another reason not to like the multiverse, at least for me.

With that all being said, it could be an absolute master stroke casting. I'm sure RDJ's got the acting chops to pull of a very good VVD, the biggest obstacle is the fact he's already got such strong ties within the MCU as Tony Stark/Iron Man. They need to keep him unrecognisable IMO, have him attached in name only, rarely seen maskless & when he is, heavy scarring, accent, the whole thing.

But overall, not really a fan of the casting, would have preferred someone fresh & new to the MCU to take the role.

It didn't need to end with Endgame. I think the constant TV shows and horrible direction were the problem. We should have had an Avengers movie last year or this year with the new Avengers. Sam Wilson, Shang-Chi, Spider-Man, Thor, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, Ant-Man and a few others. The movie would do just fine without all the legacy characters. It is possible to have a successful movie without RDJ.
