Horror Robert Eggers to direct 13th Century Werewolf Thriller ‘Werwulf’

I was re-reading Borys Kit's article on The Hollywood Reporter and this caught my attention in particular:

"Eggers wrote Werwulf with Sjón, who co-wrote heady Viking saga The Northman with the filmmaker. While details are scarce, sources say the story is set in 13th century England. The script also features dialogue that was true to the time period and has translations and annotations for those uninitiated in Old English."

The title "Werwulf" is the Old English spelling of werewolf, so that certainly supports THR's claim.

But in doing some light research, it appears to me that Old English wasn't being spoken during the 13th Century. In fact, Old English started to phase out pretty early into the 12th Century and was ultimately replaced by Middle English. Could THR have simply gotten this mixed up and the movie will be spoken in Middle English? But if that's the case, why the Old English spelling of "werwulf" for the title? (The Middle English spelling is "werwolf").

Not trying to be nitpicky. I know Eggers is slavish to historical accuracy, so I was simply curious as to what people think about this because it seems a pretty major discrepancy on the surface.

I mean, there is still the chance of a later Release of that...if they are smart.

Eggers should collect one of the other Skarsgårds for this. Either Gustav or Stellan will do. :innocent:
It is pretty funny that two Skarsgard brothers each played the title character in two consecutive Eggers films.

Kind of disappointed this jumped in front of The Knight, but it's an exciting idea. Can't blame Eggers for going this route, I have no doubt it was an easy sell after Nosferatu turned out to be a hit. I'm curious how much he'll vary from the traditional Wolfman story. Either way, there's a laundry list of actors I'd love to see in it, starting first and foremost with Liam Cunningham. Get my man Davos back fighting werewolves!

So why is the title in Old English if that wasn't the common language of the 13th century?

Although when we speak with the DP he admits the film’s multiple Oscar nominations in the technical categories are a bit bittersweet since while he and several other longtime collaborators were recognized, Eggers went overlooked again. But perhaps he’ll have another shot soon enough since Eggers has already dated his next film with Focus Features: Werwulf, a reportedly 13th-century set lycanthrope movie due on Christmas Day 2026. And Blaschke and Eggers are currently discussing the look of the movie.

“Yeah, we’re doing it now,” Blaschke says. “I can’t tell you a thing. But it’s something that’s not been done before that I’m aware of, or not done in this way. So [we’re] just going to test it and see if it works.”

While the cinematographer is understandably reticent about sharing too many details on the new period piece werewolf film, he and Eggers have both cultivated a strong cineaste following due to their dedication to historical research and evoking period authenticity, often with visual reference points from the art of a film’s setting. When asked if the two have yet begun looking at 13th century artwork, Blaschke adds: “We’re still figuring it out and I can’t talk about it, [but] the primary candidate has not been done before.”

Whether that “primary candidate” refers to a specific medieval image or tale of werewolfery is being kept close to the chest, but the process mirrors some of the choices made on Nosferatu, or really any of the cinematographer’s previous collaborations with the director.

One thing I love about watching The Witch first time reactions on youtube is the part with the baby and seeing them be in utter disbelief.
