As far as I know Russell Crowe's career is not exactly sprightly either.

I think DarkKnight88 meant to refer to Russell Crowe's Robin Hood movie which came out in 2010 (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0955308/), instead of Kevin Costner's 1991 movie.

But yeah, no one's asking for another Robin Hood movie. And as far as I'm concerned, the only ones that exist are Disney's 1973 movie and Men in Tights which is a classic.

Honestly, if they hadn't started filming this before Guy Ritchie's King Arthur movie came out, they might have seen how horribly that did and cancelled the whole thing.

1. I will say it before and I will undoubtedly say it again but Taran is a bland and charisma challenged presence on screen. He's always the least interesting performer in the films where he is supposed to be the lead and this seems to indicate that hasn't changed. There is a reason Firth was brought back in the Kingsman sequel.

2. Ya'll need Jesus or to drop the nostalgia goggles. Costner was not the definitive Robin Hood and in fact in it's day the movie was far from being this embraced blockbuster. If it made money it's because Costner was on a hot streak but I remember audience response being tepid. There's a reason Elewes does that "English accent" joke in Men In Tights. I feel we really need to start talking about the difference between earned nostalgic connection and "stuff that played on cable a lot when I was a kid." We all love Rickman. He's the best thing in the movie. He's also the only standout thing in the movie (okay... Winncott is pretty good too) which is a lackluster slog at best. It neither exciting or romantic. I get feels listening to Everything I Do I Do It For You but that's cuz Bryan Adams is a slick writer of love ballads.


3. The definitive Robin Hood is still Flynn. No film has captured the swash buckling badassness of Robin walking into Prince John's feast with a stag around his shoulders knocking out the guards with the dead deer's body.

I dont think it's a question of whether Costner's film is good. Speaking for myself and some others I've grown up with in the 90s the Costner film does have some nostalgia love. We know his accent is dodgy wnd the film has cheese and hasnt aged well, but many still enjoy it because thats the Robin Hood film they grew up with.

I honestly think we've gone so far beyond what Robin Hood should be that the only solution to making this character relevant again is to take things back to an Errol Flynn style swash buckling adventure. The sword fighting alone in the Errol Flynn movie is amazing and fun to this day. For nearly a hundred years they've tried just about everything they can to make Robin Hood work as a serious character and it's just not working.

Because class warfare, the rich oppressing the poor, and the poor trying survive in a world run by the rich and powerful arent unique to any single time period. Stories like robin hood and King Arthur can take place in a futuristic setting as easily as a medieval setting. Or on any planet populated by sentient species. And the magic of king Arthur can exist alongside scifi tech or be replaced by scifi tech.

It's the same for a bunch of other timeless legends and myths. They all contain universal ideas, characters, plots and themes that can be transplanted to other worlds and times. Pretty sure Joseph Campbell wrote a famous book about this.

Yeah when someone mentions the Sheriff of Nottingham I think of Rickman in Prince of Thieves. I'm pretty damn confident that Mendelsohn's CEO of Nottingham won't be eclipsing Rickman's Sheriff.
