Robin Williams - I Believe He Earned His Own Thread

Robin died, yes everyone dies, but the suicide angle adds more of the shock to it. Wonder if people will ever learn the lessons from things like these.

What lessons are you referring to?

If he is referring to the fact that when it comes to mental health, we are either too ignorant and/or too ashamed to acknowledge our issues and to seek help as well as the notion that as a society, we should push towards eliminating that stigma, then I fully agree with you.

Better access to good care would be nice too. Many folks don't get the help they need. :( My sister has a daughter who cuts, she had to wait a really long time to get her into some kind of full time care for even a few weeks of careful watching. Long waiting list.

Yeah, I hope the lesson people do walk away with is to seek help. Depression can be such an extremely lonely battle that someone who is going through it should reach out, or have friends and family reach out to them, and get help.

It sounds like Robin Williams did seek help numerous times. He was very upfront about his depression and I read that he recently admitted himself into a 12 step program for depression.

If all the resources that he utilized couldn't help him with his depression, then it's no surprise he chose to end it this way.

TMZ said:
Sources who were around Robin at the time he decided he needed rehab tell TMZ ... he was in a deep, dark depression. The people we spoke with confirm what Robin's people told TMZ when we broke the story ... he had not fallen off the wagon, but was struggling to center himself.

One source says, "Just before he checked in [to rehab] it was obvious ... he had not gotten treatment for so long he was too far down the road."

Another source says he had been "internalizing all the pain of addiction and it was obvious to anyone who was around him."
...

the world gets to keep rapists, pedos nutjobs and dictators but we lose a guy like robin, it just doesnt make any sense it really doesnt :(

I've already posted about Robin Williams in the RIP Celebrity thread. But I agree that it is fitting for him to have his own section so that people can say goodbye to an icon and judging by what thousands of others have been saying, a thoroughly decent person too.

I will miss his talent enormously. He was a unique and amazing man.

R.I.P.
Robin Williams

RIP Robin Williams

One of the most talented, versatile actors of our time. He's mostly known for comedy (Mrs. Doubtfire) and fantasy roles (Hook, Aladdin), but he did great in drama (Good Will Hunting) and even playing villains (Insomnia). He will truly be missed, I feel so sorry for his family.

While extra funding for mental health facilities is good, I think our society should focus more on root causes of depression. We really should be asking why America has highest rate of depression in the world for a first world country and why the rate seems to be growing?

I remember reading late 2013 about how he went back to work on television primarily because he needed consistent income to pay millions of alimony and divorce settlements to his 2 ex-wives (this isn't even child support since his kids are already adult..this is pure alimony). He was practically bankrupt and was taking roles he didn't really want to take or desire. The feeling of abandonment and having to start over when you really should be retired can take a huge toll. How much psychiatry can really help with ordeal like that? There should be examination whether these divorce proceedings are reasonable

“Heard joke once: Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. Doctor says, "Treatment is simple. Great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. Says, "But doctor...I am Pagliacci.”

That's a good one.

I thought of the poem 'Richard Cory'

Whenever Richard Cory went downtown,
We people on the pavement looked at him:
He was a gentleman from sole to crown,
Clean-favored, and imperially slim.

And he was always quietly arrayed,
And he was always human when he talked;
But still he fluttered pulses when he said,
"Good-morning," and he glittered when he walked.

And he was rich – yes, richer than a king –
And admirably schooled in every grace:
In fine, we thought that he was everything
To make us wish that we were in his place.

So on we worked, and waited for the light,
And went without the meat, and cursed the bread;
And Richard Cory, one calm summer night,
Went home and put a bullet through his head

I took this at Disney World a long time ago, it’s Robin Williams’ handprints outside the Great Movie Ride. His wife and kids’ handprints were there too, and so was his noseprint - he dunked his face in the cement:

I heard that park had its flags at half-staff today. :csad:

Yeah he's more than earned a thread on the Hype. It would a been hilarious if he had been posting on here or knew of us.

This is the one celebrity death that had me fight back my tears.

as strange as it may sound, the passing of Robin Williams yesterday, despite all the celebrity deaths in the recent past, is the one that is still hitting me in the feels... he just gave no indication to ME of what was going thru his mind and behind the scenes... he just seemed so not like someone who would take the final path that he did... I first encountered him on that episode of Happy Days that served as the pilot for his series, Mork and Mindy... I just STILL can't believe it... and now to hear the coroner's report of how he went about it, well, this has all been a stunner to me...

ABC is doing a retro on him now.....dammit.

I remember hearing the story by Chris Reeves about how after his accident Robin came to visit him. He said how he felt like there was no hope left while lying in his hospital bed, when out of nowhere, Robin came in the room in dressed as a doctor saying that he was going to need a proctologist examination. Chris said it was the first time he had laughed since his accident. What's sad is this makes me realize that maybe the great comic talent that Robin was, needed a laugh himself when he was at his lowest points. :( This is the first time that I had cried after hearing a celebrity die, and I'm still not over it.

I saw Aladdin on Broadway a few months ago, and the guy who plays the Genie was terrific and very wisely kept from turning it into a Robin Williams impression and made the part his own.

But as I was leaving the theater, I heard a guy saying, “The Genie was really good, considering he had to follow Robin Williams...”

It’s like everyone knew he was irreplaceable.

I'm not going to lie. This death has affected me way more than I could have ever imagined. Even the tragic passings of Paul Walker and Heath Ledger (God bless their souls) didn't affect me this much.

I never knew that he won a Special Achievement Award at the Golden Globes for voicing the Genie...

And I'm just going to leave this here...

Yeah, there was a push to get him an Oscar nomination too, but I think the Academy nixed it. I think the script wound up being ineligible as well because so much of it was improvised.

Jimmy Fallon just did a tribute on the a Tonight Show, and broke down a bit while he was doing it. He climbed up on the desk and said "Oh captain, my captain".

Bicentennial Man was awesome, **** it.
