The Earth Stands Still Next May

The 1950s spawned many notable sci-fi classics with several of them, notably "The Time Machine" and "War of the Worlds", having been remade. Others however are still in the works like "When Worlds Collide", yet arguably the most famous one has remain hereto untouched - until now.

1951's "The Day the Earth Stood Still" tells of a humanoid alien who comes to Earth to warn its leaders not to take their conflicts into space, or they will face lethal consequences. A demonstration of his resolve is that all electrical power on Earth is suspended for half an hour.

Whilst the giant robot Gort, the silver alien spaceship, and even the saying "Klaatu barada nikto" have become cemented in popular culture, the film still stands as one of the more acclaimed and provocative pics of the era with underlying themes of religious symbolism, paranoia and an underlying message of piece combined with a dark and cynical take on human society.

Now, Boxoffice Mojo reports that 20th Century Fox has staked out May 9th of next year for release of a remake of the project. One posting is hardly conclusive even though BOM is very reliable, but the report was then confirmed by Fox to FirstShowing.net.

From the sounds of it though this is purely concept stage for now as no-one is attached, but one wonders can the remake resonate in modern times as much as the original? It'll be tough.

Hopefull it will be as memorable as the Time Machine and War of the Worlds remakes.

:csad:

Never seen the original but if it's as good as the WOTW remake i'll look forward to it,not sure they can meet that release date though

[vader]NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!![/vader]

Leave our classics alone!!!

i didn't even see the old one, i'm getting it now! sounds awesome :D

i see...... it might work.. but then again War of the Worlds might have worked too... MIGHT!

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think some of you have noticed I've been saying I've wanted a remake for this one numerous times.

I'm THRILLED they are actually doing it!! :) I just hope they do it justice.
(oh and I thought the War of the Worlds remake was just as good as the original, possibly better)

Why, dude? The original is a masterpiece. You actually expect them to surpass it with a remake. Doing a remake of Earth Stood Still is like trying to remake The Godfather.

I dunno. This has news a "it's gonna suck!!!" aftertaste.

Na, I don't think they could redue the Godfather well.

I think when a film becomes old enough, it's worth a remake. Especially this film!

As long as the message remains the same...the THEME remains the same...I am more than happy to see the story re-told (with minor changes) and brand new special effects. As long as they don't turn it into a run n'gun explosion flick, i'll be very happy. :) (well, except for when the tanks get destroyed...I'm sure we'll see some awesome disentegration action)

Hmmm, my guess is that this remake will enhance the Christ-symbolism of Klaatu, which will upset fanboys as Christ-parallels with their favourite characters always do.

Not necessarily. If if it subtle and well executed like Donner's Superman then most wont object. But of it's forced and gimmicky like Superman Returns then it will insult everyone's intelligence.

But everyone has seen the Godfather and it's timeless.

The Day the Earth Stood Still hasn't been seen by most people and is dated.

True, that many haven't seen it but it isn't dated at all. Even people who hate old black and white movies can sit down and enjoy this movie. Its the Citizen Kane of sci-fi movies.

Woot! Wow, no one likes the idea of this remake do they? Bad news for Fox, I tell ya... ;)

If they do it without bastardizing it into CGI oblivion, it should. The original came when at the dawn of the Cold War; right now we're stockpiling our nukes all over again, so the story is certainly as relevant now as it was in 1951.

B'sides, the idea of an extraterrestrial being landing on Earth to give the world's leaders a b**chslap and tell'em to wise up is just too awesome to NOT retell. :woot:
