Drama Rocky/Creed Cinematic Universe Thread

I wish there was a way to bring Carl Weathers into this series but there really isn’t unless you de-age him into a flashback which wouldn’t make sense.

That was great, thanks for that. Awesome to see how much he loves the character, great enthusiasm, and still pulls for Rocky to win against him. :D

Isn’t the third act basically the final fight?

yeah pretty much but the bits leading up to that happen a little faster compared to the first half of the movie. Still solid though. And I'd say even though Creed can firmly stand on its own now, you do feel Stallone's absence which is to be expected since he's been such an integral part since the beginning. But overall, those are just tiny nitpicks. Everything else is a big thumbs up from me.

Is Rock shown or mentioned at all? That’s why the first Creed will always be the best to me. I loved where they took Rocky and it felt like a natural ending for him more so than the second one where he went to Vancouver.

He doesn't appear. He's alluded to and name dropped but not much. No lie, I missed Rocky, but mostly because I really love the "family" relationship between Adonis and him. However, the Creed films needed a movie without Rocky to truly grow and they pulled it off about as well as you can ask for. As long as Rocky is there, even as a cameo, he casts such a big shadow that it can't help but take away the shine from guys like Wood Harris or even Tessa Thompson. I do want Rocky to show up if they do indeed have future Creed films, but now this series has shown it has the ensemble that can operate without Sly's presence.

I'll tell you what though, I didn't miss Sly nearly as much as I missed Ludwig Goransson's score. My biggest knock on the film is the score, where Creed 3 is a big step down from the prior 2 imo.

Mentioned briefly when referencing Apollo. I think Stallone's absence was gonna be inevitable when it came to the Creed sequels, so I'm still happy with the way it's been handled and I think his story ended greatly. That said, I'd totally be on board for Rocky to return in any of the upcoming movies.

@Another_Fool the score is the thing was underwhelmed by. Probabaly the only thing in the film I was let down by.

How’s the pacing?

Just also adding my own 2 cents. The pacing overall is good, but it does advance the plot a bit fast for the final act. I wouldn't say rushed but I do think the film could've been 5 to 10 minutes longer just to add a wee bit of meat to a couple things or maybe because I wanted some staple formulaic scenes that existed in most of the other Rocky/Creed films. Other than that though, I think the audience gets enough development despite the quick dive towards the final fight that it's not a major detriment.

I'm curious how people will feel about the stylistic choices for the fight scenes. They're different but I honestly think it's refreshing to see different styles when it comes to the fights in these movies. It worked for me.

Ugh.

Maybe a Mickey prequel could work?

But this is what’s dangerous when they just see this as content churning IP when each instalment came from such a deep personal place.

Honestly, haymaker after haymaker every round gets kind of boring. I know it looks good cinematically, but it would be nice to see some blocking now and then
Yeah those touches make it look more like a real boxing match.

I've enjoyed every film in this franchise to various degrees, but this was definitely a BIG step up from Creed 2 IMO and that's mostly because of Johnathan Major's performance and MBJ's direction.

I'm already hearing a ton of complaints from certain people I follow on YT who didn't like how stylized the fights were in this, but I honestly loved it because of how unique and brutal it felt at times.

Like others have said its very anime inspired which I can definitely see being a bit off putting for some, but as a HUGE DBZ fan I welcome this kind of stuff and hope to see it implemented in more films.

As of right now this is easily my favorite of the three Creed films.

Wow, hope I like it as much. Even on par with the others would have me seriously excited.

Creed 2 was definitely a step down. It felt like a retread of Rocky 3 and 4 and was just too predictable, even for a boxing movie.
I was watching the Creed 3 review on Double Toasted and they were talking about how Creed 2 added a childish, macho attitude to Adonis out of nowhere that didn't fit with the character from the first and I agree with that.

I don't want to spoil anything for people who haven't seen it yet, but Adonis definitely got some much-needed growth in this movie that was severely lacking in Creed 2 IMO. I honestly found him to be pretty unlikeable in that movie at certain points, but I couldn't be happier with how MBJ and the writers handled him here.

His scenes with his adorable daughter were by far some of my favorite scenes in the movie.

It was strange. Like the writers decided that the chip on his shoulder would translate to him having an ego that would push people away because of pride which is the opposite of how he is in the first one. I still enjoy Creed II though.
