Rocky. People still don't get it!

i still think one of the biggest oscar questions is should have saving private ryan beat pulp fiction

Both were amazing films, but Pulp Fiction had serious competition between Forrest Gump and The Shawshank Redemption. Any one of those could've won, IMO.

Btw, SPR was nominated in 1998.

I'm talking about Costner getting best direction.
But we'll both agree that Pan's Labyrinth will be this years unsung best picture.

Ohhhh.....

Yeah, definitely.
Scorsese should win Best Direction every single time he is nominated.

I saw Pan's Labyrinth, yesterday.
Damn, it was such a great film.
The best of 2007. (So far, for me)

I love Rocky (the first one, and like the second) but All The Presidents Men, Network AND TAXI DRIVER are all better films though.

What I dont get is how Dances With Wolves and Kevin Costner could beat Goodfellas and Scorsese. Or how Ordinary People beat Raging Bull. Or Chariots Of Fire beat Raiders of the Lost Ark. Rocky still retains its power as a great movie. It even made the AFI's 100 greatest movies 20 years later, so I don't think it was just the bicentennial. As much as I love Taxi Driver, it's not one of those films you pop in and watch every year, unless you want to be depressed. Network, I saw it and that's as far as it goes. It's too self-important for my tastes. Rocky on the other hand genuinely makes me feel good while I watch it.

I agree that Rocky is STILL a classic! It's definitly better than questionable Oscar winners like the ones you've mentioned before. But, the discussion is why it won in 1976 when it was up against some of the greatest films of the decade. And, the answer is the bicentennial. Timing is everything, man! You can't deny it.

My theory is that a good movie IS a good movie. Regardless of when you release it, but you have to admit that a success of a film depends on its a release. If Rocky was released in 1975 or 1977 it STILL would have been a great movie. You can't take that away from the film. But, the reason it became the biggest hit of the year and spawned 5 sequels was because it was released in 1976.

I really don't get Rocky, and especially how it could possibly win an Oscar over those others.

Meathead wants to be a boxer, trains, falls in love, loses fight.
w00t!

Even though he lost the fight,He still went 10 rounds as an amatuer with the heavyweight champion of the world...it's like a Mr. Nobody going 10 rounds with Mike Tyson in his prime. Rocky was a feel good underdog film that has alot of mass appeal...Travis Bickle shaving his head, taking his date to a porn theater and trying to "save" a 12 year old by killing everyone in sight, doesn't have the appeal Rocky does...even though Taxi Driver is pretty powerful.

I agree.

I guess I also relate this to Crash winning a couple of years back.
We are still dealing with racism, epithets, and stereotypes today and it only gets worse everyday. Worse more than ever, now, than back in the 80's.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is it worse now than back then (late 70's - 80's), anybody?
