Ross Hughes Colors Thread

Thought I'd toss up a couple more pages from each of these books.

I just ended a two week coloring vacation by doing a test page for Hi-Fi (which I'm sure I can't show) and had to change up the way I was working to fit in with the way the studio works. I really liked the results, so I applied it to these character sheets for another client of mine. It's a cut and brush approach, which isn't something I had done before. I'm pleased with the results, but I turn it over to you guys to give me a fresh set of eyes.

I really like this look, it's very slick and clean. Do you know any websites or forums that have instructions or tutorials on coloring like this?

Sorry, I'm just getting back to this thread.

There are LOTS of tutorials out there to be found. What I did with the character sheets here is just a simple cut and brush style. I used the lasso tool to make selections of areas that I wanted to apply highlights and then used the soft round paint brush tool set to Screen (75% opacity, 50% flow) to paint them in. From there it's pretty much about color choices. For the backgrounds, I went with a textured brush and painted using the Multiply setting.

If you're looking for more in depth concepts here are a couple of books that might help:

I've been kind of dragging in getting some practice in. Family visiting, car buying, car selling, and now I'm getting ready for Thanksgiving. Where is that 25th hour???? I'm going to try to bang out a couple others before then, but for sure after Thanksgiving, I'm going to be hitting things hard.

Done for practice/portfolio. Comments and crits are encouraged.

I joined Hi-Fi Studios at the tail end of October and some of the pages I've worked are finally coming out, so I can finally show some of it. WOOHOO!!!!

My first assignment was for two pages of Undertaker:Timequake for Titan Publishing. This was a great way to get my Hi-Fi run started off. I grew up a wrestling fan, and even though I don't watch it any longer, I'll always have a place for it. I remember Taker when he first got his start as Mean Mark Callous in the early WCW days. Who knew he would grow to be one of the biggest names in the business. I was in Toys R Us (of all places) looking for some stuff for my son when I saw the issue in their comic section, so I immediately picked it up. :)

I've got a lot more coming that I still have to sit on, but as soon as I can I'll let you guys in on it. Got some True Blood on the way, a little Young Jack Sparrow, as well as my first foray into DC Comics!

I love working independent titles, and I'll probably never close the door on it, but there is also something really cool about telling someone you worked on a certain title or character and not have to explain to them what it is. LOL

Not sure if there is a better location to post this on here, but I wanted everyone to know that I'm currently open for commission work. If you're interested in a quality colorist or know someone who is, I'm looking for more work and can get the job done. Just shoot me an e-mail and we can discuss the details.

Thanks! More art coming soon!!!! Promise!

Another cover done for Sniper and Rook. Took me longer than I would have liked, but having to color most of it while looking through one eye was quite the challenge. Damn pink eye......

Had some of my work for Hi-Fi hit the stands recently so I'm good to post these now, I think. This was my first ever work published for one of the big two so I was super-psyched to get the opportunity even if it was only a single page for each. At least I feel like I'm heading in the right direction. :D

Who doesn't want to color the JLA, right? I did. This was from JLA #53. Pencils by Mark Bagley and inks by Norm Rapmund.

I'm a HUGE Captain Marvel fan, so it was pretty cool to be able to color a page from the Shazam! one-shot. Can't wait to sink my teeth into the Big Red Cheese himself! Pencils by Cliff Chiang

More to come!!!!! While these have already gone to print, I'd still love to hear any feedback you may have on them. Good or bad, whatever I can use to get better, I'll be happy to take.

Color commission for an anniversary present. You know you've got a good woman when she commissions comic book art for you. :) She wanted herself as Catwoman and her husband as Batman (hence the bald Bruce Wayne).

I ended up going with a limited palette due to all the stuff going on in the artwork. I thought that might help focus the eye a bit better. Bob drew a Bruce head as well that I'm going to slide in there for the portfolio, but I haven't gotten to that yet.

C&C's always appreciated.

Man, I'm so pumped! Justice League Generation Lost #22 hit the stands this week. These are the two pages I did for that issue for Hi-Fi. My first published colors on Batman (Bruce Wayne version :) ), and to top it all off it had a sweet shot of Wonder Woman! Two of the Trinity, baby! Forgive my exuberance, but working in comics is just cooler than even working for the space program.

AND, my fanboy-ness isn't over yet.

Here are a couple pages from Adventure Comics #524, in stores NOW!!!! This is twice as cool for me because I'm a) a BIG Legion of Superheroes guy. The very first comics I ever read was Legion of Superheroes. I can still remember sitting in my dentist's office and reading those comics, so I've got a soft spot for the Legion. And b) I'm tremendous fan of Phil Jimenez's work. His work on Wonder Woman after George Perez left the book back in the day, kept me reading the title. Probably the biggest compliment I could give him was that it was so difficult for me to tell his work from Perez's because they were so similar and both so very damn good.

Living the dream, baby!!!

Do you ever look at a page of bad art and just think, "Wow, they want me to colour this crap?!"

All you've shown so far is great art so I was just wondering.

When that feeling starts to creep in (because I have colored art that I'm not overly fond of, I just don't show it :cwink:) I remind myself that the money all looks the same. LOL Besides, if I do my job well enough, hopefully it all works out.

Quick commission for Bob LeFevre. I was always more of a Star Wars guy, but I did like the Trek too. :)

Got a break between Hi-Fi assignments, so I'm trying to get caught up on commissions and see if I can finally move on to more portfolio work. This is a commission for Bob LeFevre and is being given to a friend of his family. I think the plan is to make T-shirts out of it for the client's bar, so I wanted to keep things kind of smooth so I didn't use any kind of texture brushes and just allowed the pencils and the color to kind of define texture in places.

A few more.

This was the first time I was working George Perez's artwork (for real anyway). This was the last set of pages I had from Hi-Fi in what I had come to call Hell Week. I had about 3 hours of sleep a night, worked my day job on top of coloring, and my wife and her son were both sick. Deadlines and extra pages of True Blood and JLGL #24 didn't give me as much time with these as I would have liked but it was still a HUGE thrill to be able to work these pages. George Perez has been my favorite artist since I was a kid, so this was pretty special.
