Saddest scene ever in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

What is the saddest scene ever in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

  • Captain America turning into a frozen superhero ice block in Captain America: The First Avenger

  • Groot dying in Guardians of the Galaxy

  • Tony Stark blowing up all of his Iron Man suits and throwing away his ARC Reactor in Iron Man 3

  • Other(post in thread)

I selected Groot because I did tear up there.
Another scene I teared up in was during Frigga's funeral in Thor TDW. That funeral was a very heartfelt sequence.

Yinsen's death is a choker. I also think Steve visting Peggy, now an old woman, is a real tearjerker - Attwell's acting there is incredible.

But two scenes which I find really sad are a lot more subtle.
1 The part where Thor visits Loki after Frigga's death in TDW. Loki's illusion melts away revealing a broken man. That's the real Loki not the smug unrepentant image he hides behind.
2. The very last scene in WS where Cap opens the file revealing the picture of a haggard Bucky in cryofreeze and right next to it - a picture of Bucky as he was, full of life and innocence. Gets me every time.

This made me laugh harder than it should. I do kind of feel bad for Chris Eccleston though. He seemed to like Malekith's story which was mostly cut from the movie.

Yeah, Eccleston is a great actor and probably could have been a great villain, but the script just sucked. Between this and GI Joe, I think Chris should steer clear of comic booky stuff.

Have you see The Leftovers though? Eccleston kills it on that show.

Peter's mother dying.
Captain America promising Carter a date as he goes in the water.
Groot dying.
Carter's alzheimer's scene in TWS
Coulson's death aftermath

I chose Groot, but what made me tear up was Rocket crying over the stick.

Yeah I just watched GOTG for the first time a few days ago and while I don't think the movie I has good has people say. I think the movie is one of the more emotional sad CBM out there and that part with rocket was very very sad and even right before that when he says something to groot about why are you doing this or something like that.

Peter Quill with his Mum as she passed away. A genuine tear jerker.
Peggy/Cap farewell
Old Peggy / Cap reunion will have extra feels post Agent Carter I think.

Not the saddest ever, but one that goes pretty ignored - Bruce talking about trying to kill himself, but Hulk prevented that. Pretty sad / dark moment IMO.

Peggy and Steves phone conversation.
THOR and Janes separation across the stars
Rocket grieving for his best friend

Those are the only noteworthy ones for me

Skye (Daisy) watching Triplett turn to stone and crumble to pieces.

If only he didn't kick the diviner, a piece wouldn't have punctured him.

He died not knowing Skye (Daisy) was actually ok.

on the list, groot dying. but myself and my mother were quite moved when we saw coulson die in avengers 1.

In terms of sad moments, Rocket's drunken confession and Loki screaming at Thor during their fight in "Thor" always get me.

Captain America: The First Avenger

Fury: You've been asleep, Cap. For almost 70 years. [Steve is silent with shock] You gonna be okay?
Rogers: Yeah. Yeah, I just... I had a date.
Still bothers me that they cut out the, "we won" line. That would be Cap's first question.

From the order as they appeared:

- Yinsin death scene

- Peggy going through Rogers files and seeing a picture of him pre-serum.

- Rogers visiting Peggy at the retirement home.

- Quill's mom death scene

- Groot's sacrifice

This.

I'd have to go with the retirement home in TWS.

Really disappointed that Coulson`s death is not up there.

Maybe that's because Coulson is still alive. But it is not like bringing him back was all sunshine and lollipops. And now he has mega-stress running the remains of SHIELD and doing all of that. It's only getting tougher. Screaming "Let me Die" over and over. Coulson is a tragedy.

There are sad scenes in the MCU? Since when?!

Kidding aside, I will admit that Groot's death in Guardians of the Galaxy is pretty well done (even if it's a fake out), and I feel bad for Peter Quill in the first scene. But other than that, I wouldn't really qualify these films as having "sad" scenes. Which is again what makes Guardians so special since it's the silliest film from the studio, yet somehow still the most affecting.

I guess Captain America's "i had a date" line? I liked it how the movie ends.
