Saltburn (dir. Emerald Fennell)

This was a bit of a disappointment. I did enjoy it; the performances were good, witty dialogue, beautiful cinematography, and just pretty great vibes overall. But it feels like the movie is a little confused about what it’s trying to be and what it’s trying to say.
I think the explanation at the end really hurts the movie. It would work much better if it didn’t try to portray Oliver as some mastermind who orchestrated all of this from the very start. I think if the events were more portrayed as a series of escalations by a man desperately in love/obsessed with another man, his wealth, his life, then it would maybe work better. Because the murder happens when he’s desperate. He fumbled Venetia’s interest, he realised that he couldn’t get rid of Farleigh, and Felix had found out about his lies. So he was really desperate. And then with Venetia I think he saw that she was also seeing through his facade, had an opportunity, and took advantage of it. Because the ending takes place around 2022/2023. So, everything happens summer of 2007? And then “chance encounter” in 2022. Weird master plan to be seemingly doing nothing in between.

So yeah I think it needed to show that maybe. Anyway, still a very captivating movie to watch. Rosamund Pike was a total delight. All of her lines were zingers. Emerald Fennell continues to be a director whose work is really captivating, but I hope her next project is a little bit more well thought out.

Yeah, I agree with you there.
While Barry going full Joker Soze at the end was entertaining, and I understand why they did it that way given the Ripley influence, it did seem to undermine what he was apparently going through over the course of the movie. I think lying about his father dying and his mother being a drug addict was a good twist (and one I didn’t see coming) because it really showed how insecure and warped he was without making him this devious monster. But at the end, we see that he had orchestrated everything in this awful way and it really requires a lot of suspension of disbelief as well as just kind of ignoring a lot of his character’s behavior and development throughout the course of the movie. And yeah, waiting for so long to make his move on Rosamund Pike seems to be a stretch given how he was this evil mastermind.

I kinda figured he was lying about his dad dying but I bought into his lie that they were drug addicts. I really didn’t expect him to actually come from a very privileged background. I think everyone, including me, expected this to be a ‘eat the rich’ type thing so that was a good way to use expectations to subvert them.
But yeah, like you said, it undermines what he appeared to be going through throughout the rest of the movie. I really do want to watch this again though just to see how knowing everything affects the viewing experience.
