THE WIZARD Q&A: SAM RAIMI
By Mike Cotton

Are you someone who goes out to the movies and sees “Batman Begins” and “Superman Returns”?

You know, I did see “Superman Returns” and I thought that it was great, but I don’t usually go see movies because I’m so busy with “Spider-Man.” I used to see movies until I started making “Spider-Man.” About six years ago, I stopped seeing movies because I work six days a week from early morning until late at night every night, and there is no time to see movies anymore when you work that hard and that long. I’ve taken off, in the last three years, 10 days. Two years actually, that I’ve taken off 10 days, just to be with my kids. So, I can’t kind of waste two hours of my time off to go see a movie. I’d rather spend it with my kids.

Raimi obviously has good taste, he knows a good movie when he sees it.

Come on Ave (hi :) ) he was just being polite :o Lol

you know you're gonna hear that one :woot: ;)

Thanks Flawless :)

Sam Raimi loves Superman, it's not suprising he liked the movie.

I had a feeling Ramii would like it based on alot of the commentary about the Spiderman films Ive seen from him.

He appreciates character pieces, epic filmmaking and poignant emotional concepts for films.

"Special" - "Great" - "Exciting"

All just Hollywood standard answers. Watch a DVD Extra or Movie Special and everyone will praise themselves even if it's the biggest dud ever brought to light.

Raimi makes pretty clearly that he's not interested to spend time for a movie neither does he care about them enough to elaborate. He was polite, not honest, because he just doesn't care and he can't go out and bash someone without having enough arguments. That's a no no in Hollywood.

If you want an honest opinion, search for Kevin Smith on youtube. There's an event from the summer '06 (movie festival or something) and he gets asked how he liked the movie. He made nearly all of the points we discussed on this board and the crowed applauded him on every word.

I imagine Kevin Smith didn't like the movie, that is as much of a suprise as Raimi loving it.

If youre refering to this?

He just made a joke about the memory erase kiss in Superman II and thought Returns flowed as a direct sequel to Lester's crappy film.

Singer has stated many times that it doesnt, so Kevin just made an ass of himself again being wrong on the subject.

He loved it? What a shocker.

See, the thing is, Smith actually has a knowledge of Superman.

As far as being a continuation of Superman 2, or not, no one really knows, not even Singer. He doesn't even know what kind of a mess of continuity he created. That's why the film was a B.O. dissapointment, nobody knew what he was tring to do.

He knows Superman well enough that his science of Superman theories are wrong.

Lois actually bore Superman a child in 'Whatever Happened to the Man of Tommorow" (1986) so his fallopean tube nonsense is just his own flawed speculation.

no offence, but does everyone have to live by what kevin smith says? who cares, hes just kevin smith. ok he made clerks. WOW.

Hey Maze

Raimi doesnt strike me as a kiss ass though, if he didnt like the movie i dont think he would say he did, he would just find some way to get out of the question.

Bryan Singer reveals that the movie will feature a return of Superman of some sorts, and not a complete reimagining. He also went on to reveal that there may be references to the Christopher Reeve movies and maybe even scenes from the other movies. "It puts the first films in a kind of vague history. So what it doesn't do is tread over the 1978 Richard Donner film, it doesn't tread over 'Smallville.' It elaborates on the existence of Superman in the world in a history. He's out of the culture and then he returns."

personnaly i have never been confused knowing that.
and it's a formula that have worked for twenty years with James Bond.;)

I agree , you know it;)

i was just joking about potential answers.

i love how people assume . if Raimi didn't love it he could have simply said (like he does later in the interview) that he don't go to the movies .Period. no need to further explanations.

I'm happy for anybody who loved the movie and very much wish that I could agree with said people.

No that's not the vid I mean. Looks like it's gone. There was another Clerks Q&A event (indoor) where a fan asked and Kevin elaborated on many things for about 15 minutes or so until he went to another subject. I'm so sure about that because I remember downloading 3 long videos. The first had him start on the movie during the middle part and the last one ended roughly before the middle and they were all about 7 to 10 minutes long.

Quite interesting because he also made a few positive points about the movie I hadn't thought about. Too bad it's gone.

Exactly! In my opinion, a lot of comic fanatics and Internet nerds (redundant, I know) actually have terrible taste in movies and in entertainment; they enjoy movies like SNAKES ON A PLANE and X-MEN: THE LAST STAND. I post a lot in the General Movies section of this message board and some of the movies that are liked by some of the people who've also posted there are just appalling.

Anyway, it's expected for comic fanatics and Internet nerds (redundant again, I know) to hate SUPERMAN RETURNS, and to worship Kevin Smith and *********e to his trashy movies.

If people say express their dislike for the film they're being honest if they say its good or great they're just trying to be nice. Raimi didn't even comment on Batman Begins, he specifically praised SR. He could have easily dogded the question and say that he hadn't seen the movie but he didn't.

BTW i must say when you read interviews like this i get a more and more respect for directors of these franchises.Sometimes people forget how much they sacrifice for our pleasure. I know they get paid good money but its not something a lot of people can handle especially if you've got a family.

Well, I can definetely see why Raimi would like it. The character development, the highlight on emotion and drama. There's also plenty Raimi wouldn't like about it, like the lack of action or excitement. But I guess even if Raimi wouldn't like the movie, he would definetly respect Singer as a director trying to breathe life into the franchise. Singer and Raimi IMO are the best comic book movie directors out there and I think there's plenty they can learn from eachother.

You know what i totally agree, i think it wont get any better for directors of CB movies than Singer, Raimi and i have to throw Nolan in there as well, he is a fantastic director.
