At university we have a router through which we can all see and play eachother's library in itunes. Is there any kind of download whereby we can save the songs from eachother's library into our own?

Thanks.

There used to be a third-party program or two that enabled this, but Apple shut them down. You can't do it through iTunes, that's for sure. Haven't seen any third-party programs that enable this over the last couple of years, but you might do some Googling to see what you can find.

Thanks. :)

I tried a google search before I posted here but couldn't find anything. We can send songs over MSN stupidly fast because of our shared network, but it's still a pain. Just be easier if we could take what we wanted.

The best way to do it would be to set up a collective server somewhere that everyone could map to their systems or access through FTP. Hear something you like? Ask the person who has it to up it to the server so you can d/l it. Find a geek who could help set it up and administrate it and have everyone chip in for a little system with an assload of disk space to run it off of and you'll be set.

Apple doesn't allow this because if it's illegally downloaded music, they don't want you to share. Especially with their program (since they might be legally liable for any enfringement). And if it's music bought from iTunes, the file will only work on a system when the song's owner is logged in, so there's no point in sharing that way.

As for legal music other than iTunes, since they can't tell if an mp3 is legal or not, they can't take the chance and assume it's illegal and don't allow it.

What really ticks me off is that I can't drag stuff from my iPod into my iTunes library, even though I can drag from my library into my iPod.

There are freeware programs that will let you pull music off of your iPod and into iTunes. Google for it.

True, but it's an extra step.

It just gets me that, with all the care Apple takes to make their products work together seemlessly (like iLife), it isn't possible to do this.

You just explained WHY Apple doesn't make it possible to do this, though; they'll get their asses sued off by the MPAA and RIAA. In earlier versions of iTunes, it was actually possible to do what you are describing and the music industry pukes threw a hissy fit. You can blame them, not Apple, for making some things so difficult.
