After watching 6 class trips enter my local theater to see Spider-Man 3 at 11:00am, it made me think:

Should schools allow class trips to see a movie?

I wouldn't have a problem with this if the movie had some relevance to what the students are studying in class or even a preschool class seeing an appropriate animated movie. However, to spend 2 1/2 hours sitting watching Spider-Man 3 rather than learning historical facts, mastering the English language, solving a Mathematical equation or experimenting with a new science technique just demonstrates that the Educational system in America is heading no where fast! And most likely they will be back to see "Shrek the Third" and "Pirates 3".

Are we failing our students, our future?

spiderman tawt me lotss!!!

*jumps out window and breaks legs*

When I was in HS my theater class took a trip to see Amadeus. I don't think I would've seen it other wise in theaters on my own. I raved about that movie for years after that.

So I guess it depends on the movie. *shrugs*

I'm sure most schools around the country who have state tests are finished with those.....why not give the kids a break.....probably in most cases those trips are a reward for perfect attendance, top grades, etc.....

lol, I think that's incredibly stupid... they're there to learn, not go watch a movie.

I realize that you need a break every once in a while, but sending them to a movie is just inappropriate. what ever happened to recess and PE?

It's no different than schools that take a day to go to their state fair for the day.....or school's giving a "high five" to students that do well on their state tests...and take them to an area amusement park.....jeeeez its 2 hours out of the classroom.....lol, they aren't taking them on a cruise....

And of course....you went to school to learn, and that was your ONLY reason for being there....lmao....yeah:cwink:

Well, I think it's a good idea cuz kids deserve a break once in a while.

Show of hands:

No matter how educational your field trips were supposed to be, did you ever really learn anything useful during them?

I learned that the ferry to Alcatraz Island serves overpriced food, and that the animals at Marine World (back before it became a Six Flags) do a lot of nigh-stationary standing and pacing. Oh, and I think I saw a live stage performance of the story of Mulan a few years before Disney adapted it. I think I even once went to a science museum, and spent more time playing with the interactive exhibits than reading about famous scientists (as it turns out, my hair is too coarse to stand on end when I touch those bulb things).

Not once have I ever been tested on what I saw during a field trip. Know why? Because field/school trips are a fun distraction that can sometimes be educational.

Let the kids see Spider-Man 3. Free movies are an incentive to stay in school.

Exactly! Its May, folks. Here in Miami classes will end in like 3 weeks. The year is pretty much over!

Welcome to the 21st century.

I remember that. Awesome! Oh, and when I was a senior in high school they took us to a field to Magic Kingdom in Orlando. Its called Grad Night! But I guess Pheonixflight would disapprove as well. Bastard. :cmad:

Nope, not really. lol.

My brother recently went on holiday to France with his school. They set it up so that only those who had an attendance record of XXXdays and more in the school year were allowed to go.

Maybe thats what those schools were doing, Rewarding the kids for actually going to school and not bunking off?

The guys doing literature at my school got taken out to see the Lord of the Rings movies three years running. I always skipped off. I could think of better things to do.

We used to have a program called Accelerate Reading-back in 6th grade, they took those with 100 A.R. points to Disney World in Orlando. Such a great time we had. Perhaps that trip is why my school is still in the hole.

I've been teaching for 8 years now and we (the teachers) have NEVER been allowed to show our students movies that are not rated G. It's our district policy. Have teachers gotten away with showing PG or PG-13 movies in our classrooms...probably, but NEVER on a field trip. As a matter of fact, our eight grade students were trying to go watch Spiderman 3, but were shot down by the Asst. Principal.

As for taking students to the movies instead of being in the classroom teaching them something, we use it (movie field trips) as a reward for their hard work and a break away from class. This normally happens at the end of the school year.

i wish they had those in highschool or college :(

let the kids have their fun.

Kids need a break from time to time. Besides spider-man 3 is beneficial to them. They can learn science from peter parker! :D Who knows, maybe one of those kids will become a scientist and he/she will credit spider-man 3 for that.

How dare they allow children a break now and then?!?!? Those lazy bastards should get back to crack the books and preparing for the future! Work! WORK! In those two hours and twenty minutes, why hundreds of Braincells can be lost!

Oh shut the **** up. Taking kids to see a movie isn't some sort of failure of the public school system. Seriously, one day out of school is not going to cause them to become bums in the future.

Big deal. I'm sure if you were that age you'd LOVE to get out of class to see Spidey. Put yourself in their shoes. What's one little trip going ot hurt?

My school would have never let us go. I think the only remotely similar thing would be going to the IMAX to see an educational one. And it sucked.

Hey,its called the end of the year trip...
The kids have just spent the whole year learning, they deserve a field trip.
I hate people who get all pissy about this stuff, who cares if they aren't watching an educational movie or learning for one day...especially close to the end of the school year.

For my 6th grade field trip at the end of the school year wee went to navy pier and went on a cruise in lake michigan.

When I was in 8th grade, we went to see The Patriot with Mel Gibson. I didn't know back then that he would become a d*ck. But it was semi-educational. We were studying the American Revolutionary War at the time.

Maybe. How can you be sure that these movies are not relavent to what they are learning. I saw several movies in my senior year, and they were relavent to what we were learning.

Movie field trips aren't all that bad. And I doubt any teacher would take their class on a pointless field trip unless they know they can get through everything that has to be taught. As long as all the units for the year are (or will be) taught, I think it's all right to take the students out to a movie.
