Ok, someone help me solve this problem:

A hockey player is standing on his skates on a frozen pond when another player is moving with a puck at a uniform speed of 12 m/s. After 3 seconds, the first player makes up his mind to catch up. If he accelerates at 4 m/s^2, how far will he have to skate before catching up with the second player?

300,000,000 meters/second divided by 186,000 miles/second = 1,612.9 meters/mile

Also, stop with the video games and sit down and read the chapter for a change. :csad:
 
186,000x/s = 3 x 10^8y/s, where x = miles and y=meters

x = (3 x 10^8/186,000) y, and the seconds cancel out because you're dividing 1/s by 1/s, which of course equals 1.

damn i forgot the equation to this problem. it has something to with x= initial velocity plus something times time plus gravity over 2 with time as an exponent.......x=V_0+(something)t+((9.81+accel)/2)^t. look in your book for a similar equation. i could be wrong tho. but i feel like im close.

No. I don't have to solve this problem. I'm stumped at attempting to solve it and I was just being friendly to ask if anyone could provide some help. :D

y = position of second skater = 0.5(4)t^s
[position of y = intial position + initial velocity * time + 1/2 acceleration x time squared] one of the kinetic motion equations

so, set x = y and solve

yup you found the equation. haha i was off. but i said was close.

The difficulty that I'm having with this problem is figuring out the stationary hockey player's position before he decides to catch up.

You also haven't taken into account that the first player doesn't accelerate until after 3 seconds.
