Well, they were talking about when, in S:TM, Superman flys up to catch Lois when she fall's from the top of the DP roof and they mentioned how he should have killed her.

They maintained that he was flying from some distance away from the building itself to begin with, and would be traveling at something like 1200 MPH to get there to save her.

Clearly traveling at this speed when he caught her would make quite the mess.

But they made three blatent mistakes in their analysis.

FIRST, Lois is on top of the Daily Planet. Clark is walking out of that same building, the Daily Planet. SO he was NOT a great distance away, he was directly beneath her. Well, maybe off to the side after he moved to somewhere to change.

SECOND, not only is he right below her, but she does not actually start to fall untill he takes off.

These first two points mean that clearly he was in no need to be flying so insanely fast to save her in time.

BUT, they are still correct that if he were to fly straight up and catch her, stopping her dead, well, she WOULD be dead. The impact would be whatever speed she was travelling, PLUS his speed.

Here is where the third and most important mistake comes in. He does NOT stop her in her tracks.

THIRD, if they actually watched the footage that they themselves showed they would have sen by the fact that the camera stays on Superman, but the wall of the DP continues upwards and then slows and reverses only after he catches Lois, meaning that he did not stop dead, but rather flew up, revesed his direction, and thus slowed her fall down when he caught her, THEN revesed again flying back up.

HA, now THAT'S the Science of Superman!!!

Actually, Superman started from the opposite side of the street from the Daily Planet when he took off. Remember, he came out of the DP, looked for a place to change, then ran across the street to a revolving door.

Still, you're right, she didn't start falling until he had already taken off, and he did fall with her a bit after catching her.

I love that scene....
thats all I have to say, and you're right.

I was thinking the same thing when I was watching that show. The guy that was trying to disprove everything annoyed me at times, mainly with this segment. He had a lot of great points, but this one, I was like, WTF?

He wasn't going 1200...whatever. He didn't stop her dead in her tracks. Even for a 1978 film, it's clear he slowed down, reversed direction to ease the catch, and then started up again to get the helicopter.

well for a guy who can turn back time and baffle us with switchin hairstyles in an instance, his science doesn't really exist. The guy has clothes that can handle anything, but the doctor ripping it off at the end of returns. This is the same guy who through his symbol at some bad guys and captured them or him or whoever...yikes, now that's science huh?! Oh and also a guy who can create duplicates of himself and fight it in a junk yard. Yeah the guy is SUPERman. Breaking the laws of nature is his thing. For the most part he is a rediculous character to begin with, but somehow I keep caring about him.

oh and as for the jumpin out of the building and his clothes magically transforming or disappearing, still gets me today, man he is a GOD!!!

not to mention the moments where his suit turns green
