I wonder how "creationists" will try to spin this.

Creationists (Kirk Cameron/Mike Seaver): But they still didn't find the Crociduck!

Scientists Discover Fish in Act of Evolution in Africa’s Greatest Lake

In what could be a first in the world, a fish species known as cichlids has been observed by scientists in the act of splitting into two distinct species in Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake and one of the world’s biggest fresh water bodies.

This may be remarkable because what is causing them to diverge are adaptations to their vision as animals and plants try to cope with increased pollution and the effects of climate change. The change is also happening without geographical isolation, which was thought to be a precursor for evolution.

The Pundamilia nyererei is a haplochromine type cichlid native to areas in the Mwanza Gulf region of Lake Victoria. This region consists of many islands where each island region has its own color variant of the fish.

In a report published in the journal Nature, researchers from Tokyo’s Institute of Technology and the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology have observed the cichlid evolve into a new species better adapted in sighting its prey and predator.

But the scientists have also tabled evidence indicating that it is not pollution and over-fishing alone that are responsible for the disappearance of some fish species in Lake Victoria and the evolving of others like the cichlid into new species.

The report summarizes that new species may be born because of vision differences and what fish see at least in one African lake could be the driving force that causes them to evolve into new species.

This may explain the very rapid loss of pundamilia in Lake Victoria over the past 30 years. The study says the eye adaptations have also affected mating patterns.

Researchers looked at two species, conspicuous by their red or blue colours. They determined through lab experiments that certain genetic mutations helped some fish adapt their vision at deeper levels to see the colour red and others in shallower water to recognise shades of blue.

The researchers showed that the eyes have adapted to this difference so that fish that live in deeper water have a pigment in their eyes that is more sensitive to red light, while shallow-water fish were sensitive to blue.

Evolutionary science typically holds that new species are born when populations become isolated from one another, forcing them to adapt differently.

PS: For those that think I was kidding Mike Seaver really did say Crocoduck!

Only idiots don't believe in evolution.

hooray!
Creationist, suck on that polluted fish!

Chihuahuas didn't roam the land with dinosaurs...evolution happens. Man made or nature made.

I wonder how "creationists" will try to spin this.

It's a Hell beast that Satan spawned and summoned onto Earth in an attempt to fool the heathens into believing that evolution is real :cmad:

I find it interesting that those here seem to believe that creationists only believe in a literal 6 day creation, yada, yada, yada.

How ill-informed.

so, if Creationism isnt true... how did it all begin? what started it all? what evolutionary change could have possibly turned lifeless mud or water... into containing living cells that began evolution.. in that sence they are not just nutjobs. Even though i have absolutly no faith in godly beings, an afterlife, or flittering angels, it still makes a valid point that we don't have it ALL figured out. Some may say, well cells in crashed meteors could have started it all... and yet.. How did those cells from some far off planet start? Once we have that answer then you really have the creation peeps by the throat

either way.....

Go cichlids, you evolve with you bad self!

it's interesting to see how much pleasure people with "liberal" viewpoints take in belittling beliefs different than their own.

They like to show just how open minded they are about other people's beliefs.

And they constantly succeed beyond their wildest dreams.

I hope you aren't talking about beliefs that have been 100% proven to be false:o

Creation hasn't been proven false. The only thing that about creation that has been reasonably proven false is that God makes creatures in a static fashion, menaing they don't have the capacity to change.

However, as to whether the life on this planet came out of nowhere or whether there was a an intelligent behind it, is an open question and will always be an open question until either Christ comes or we gain the ability to travel back in time billions of years and film our beginnings.

The fish is mutating due to pollution.

How is that "evolution"? Its adapting to the environment because its being forced to by chemicals, not from "natural selection".

Thats like saying the Toxic Avenger evolved after chemical waste was dumped on him.

No one is arguing creation...simply the modes of life. I believe in God but I also believe in evolution which is fact. People whose religious beliefs blind them from truth is a scary thought. No one can disprove the existance of God but people have proven the existance of evolution.

You don't have to have "liberal" viewpoints in order to enjoy belittling someone's faith. :o

Necessary adaptation to rapid changes in the environment Is one of the tenets of the theory of evolution.

"Mutation. It is the key to our evolution..."

Isn't mutation a kind of evolution?

The title of this thread makes me think of a scientist opening the door on a poor fish in the bathroom.... "Hey, close the door! Can't a guy evolve in private around here?!"

eh...I'm not impressed. This is simple adaptation. I believe there is a difference in adaptation and evolution (sure, some might argue i'm splitting hairs).

A fish, due to pollution can't see its prey very well, so it adapts to the poor vision the water provides.

In the same vein, its getting cold outside, so my body is beginning to store more fat from the foods i eat for better insulation. Thats not evolution, thats just adaptation.

Show me a fish that is in the process of turning into a completely new species.
