DiCaprio indeed does tend to play in 40's/50's-based fedora-wearing-period pieces and usually he is under intense pressure and stress. It's true, he does tend to play specific parts but calling them ''all the same'' is really very condescending and so it the eternal speculation that he is fishing for an Oscar. Let's just assume that everybody is fishing for a goddamn academy award, they're the most craved prize among actors and filmmakers period. But I seriously doubt DiCaprio is building a career around his quest for the little golden statue.
Concerning this project; It sounded good when Scorsese was doing it. If it is anything to go by (which it isn't) Scott and DiCaprio's previous collaboration Body of Lies was a bland piece of work. I know I'm in a minority here, but I have never quite understood why people praise Ridley Scott so highly as a director. I have never really loved a film he did apart from Alien. He's a reasonably good director but nothing special. Very few films he made have jumped out at me, even the ones considered classics.
