Daredevil Season 1, Episode 4 "In the Blood" (USE SPOILER TAGS!)

''Take what's left and send it to his brother.''

Fisk ain't got no time for them Russians.

To me, this is a Wilson Fisk episode. I took notes going along, but the Manhattans created incomprehensible chicken scratch. In fact, right after I wrote the proceeding sentence, I went to bed. But the Kingpin did a great job. Vincent D'Onofrio does a great job of portraying a newly rich man - someone who is lower class but trying hard to seem sophisticated. On the other hand, he can be quite brutal and vicious when he needs to be. Certainly, I'm seeing the claim that he is a child and a monster.

Aside from that, I can't read what I wrote. I see I wrote "faxes suck, but we still use them" at one point, but I have no idea why. The last thing I wrote was "ow." Considering I didn't write it last episode for the spike thing, I guess the door scene had a bigger impact. However, I best stop my review here and start watching again today.

Fisk is terrifying. I certainly got the childlike quality to him that D'Onofrio has mentioned.

Well, I guess I can understand why this episode is titled "In the blood".:oldrazz::oldrazz:

I still can't get with the extreme violence. I'm sure people are going to get tired of hearing me say it. But, a scalpel is as effective as a sledgehammer. I kinda figured what was going to happen to the guy without having to see the whole 3 minutes of decapitation.

It seemed to me everyone had a bad case of "The stupids" this episode.

I really don't get Karen. She'd have a much simpler time getting where she's headed if she just painted a bullseye on her forehead. (no pun intended.:oldrazz:) Urich was pretty cool, though.

Shouldn't those Russian mobsters have just grabbed Claire in the garage and stuck a gun to her head to begin with, instead of just firing blindly at DD into the dark?

So lemmie get this straight. You're not even allowed to say the guy's name in public, but you think it's a good idea to run up to the top man while he's eating dinner with a woman in a public place to talk business?

I don't see what's to stop anyone from going after Claire and that upstairs kid again.

I don't know what to feel about DD's apparent lack of care about killing his enemies. At least they seem to be going more Batman "There but for the Grace of God,should that guy be dead" than Arrow's "I kills 'em,until I don't want to kills 'em no more." concept. I wish they would come down on it a bit tighter regarding how he stands on it.

I know folks seem to approve the lack of Marvel references, but I feel they are trying too hard to avoid it at this point. I figure Claire would compare what he's trying to do to one of the MCU heroes by now. Would be interesting to get his reaction. ( I know Wesley made a reference, but given it came out in the trailer,it hadn't as much impact)

D'Onofrio was great. Perfectly cast.

This is beyond the MCU kiddie stuff. Loki is a good villain because he has charisma but he isn't very threatening. Kingpin, I fear running into a dark alley at night.

It's hard to believe that this is produced by the same guys who made Thor: The Dark World.

Well, you're supposed to think it's excessive. It shows Fisk's rage.

When that guy interrupted Kingpin's date and ruined his chance of smashing that night, I knew Kingpin would be smashing something. I didn't expect another head to get smashed in.

They must have watched some GoT since they seem to have a fetish now lol.

You know, I knew going into this show that it would be a darker, grittier side of the MCU but I did NOT anticipate that Marvel was going to go THIS dark and violent. I am VERY pleasantly surprised! It's almost hard to believe this is the same world as The Avengers.

Wow this episode is so gory.

I loved Fisk's line to Vanessa

''A woman that can be bought isn't worth having.''

So damn true.

Willie, bub, that guy wasn't the one that embarrassed your tub of lard, it was your personal guards raising their guns to his face.
Maybe Kingpin should consider killing all his personal guards.

Also, was I the only one who got total goosebumps when DD took out those gangsters one by one in the dark Batman-style? The BEST part was Rosario Dawson's loud cackle as she said, "You want to know his name? Ask him yourself."

It totally did not work for me. maybe if we had seen a confident Fisk first but even in the car scene with Wesley, it seemed like Wesley should be the one in charge. His voice seemed full of indecision and he avoided eye contact a lot even when Vanessa wasn't around.

Honestly he seemed like a poorly socialized violent Batman villain not in control of himself who would end up in Arkham not the Kingpin of crime.

I hope they will show a smarter more confident Kingpin and show us why that wasn't an idiot decision brought by " you embarrassed me in front of my girl" like some adolescent.

I get what your saying Steamteck, but I have to slightly disagree. See, to me, the scariest villains are the most unpredictable ones. The ones who seem like they have it all together but lose control at the slightest nudge. That's why I love this version of Kingpin. You almost sympathize with him when he's with Vanessa, you see the controlled human side of him, but if you dare speak his name or embarrass him, he will destroy you, literally.

A smooth, confident Kingpin would have seemed fairly generic compared to this, imo. This Kingpin's clearly intelligent, but as kguillou says, he's scary because he's unpredictable, and has clear mental issues. Giving such a dangerous, powerful man the personality of a stunted, disturbed child only makes him more terrifying because unlike an actual child, when he has a temper tantrum, someone meets a brutal death, guaranteed. Everyone would be afraid of being the person who sets him off next.

It just looked to me like even Wesley intimidated him in the first car scene. He's not down and out for me. This interpretation can be salvaged but its strike one for me. He just came across as weak with a psychotic break to me.

Flickchick85 Sounds like you described a minor Batman villain to me.

I guess I'll see where they go with this when I watch the next episode.

I agree. That's the easier (safe) choice when it comes to "powerful villains". Much like the animated versions of a lex luther or wilson fisk.

In fact, the typical version would've had Wesley or an associate approach Vanessa requesting her for a date, etc. Instead he actually went there and asked her himself, even leaving when she declined at first.

All of the interactions with Vanessa gave more insight into his character.

Like Vanessa said, there's something "different" about him....This version of a villain is refreshing.

I loved that part too.
