CINCINNATI- Winning football teams are used to a lot of cheering.

But for the second leading tackler of the Mt. Healthy Fighting Owls, cheering has earned Anthony Cornist a penalty he doesn't think he deserves.

"It's crazy how somebody can do that to you," he said from his family's living room Monday.

When Anthony walked across the stage at his high school graduation, his family made some noise.

"It was my dream to graduate," he said.

"I'm very proud of my son," Traci Cornist said.

Apparently, so were a lot of others.

"Teachers, other students and other family members who weren't with us were also cheering for him also. He's well known," Traci said.

The excitement proved too much for the administration.

Instead of a diploma, Anthony got a letter from the principal, Marlon Styles, Jr.

"I will be holding your diploma in the main office," the letter said, "due to the excessive cheering your guests displayed during the roll call."

"I did nothing wrong except walk across the stage," Anthony said.

The school demands 20 hours of community service before he can graduate.

Those hours can be split between Anthony and his family, or the senior can perform them all himself.

"I don't understand how he's being punished for something he has no control over," Traci said. "I just thought that was ludicrous... I have no clue where the logic comes in."

Calls to the principal, the district superintendent as well as a visit to Mt. Healthy High School have all gone unanswered.

Anthony's mother says so will the penalty.

"He's definitely not doing the community service," she said. "I'm definitely not doing the community service."

That strategy could spell trouble for Anthony's game plan.

"I have a college right now that definitely needs my diploma," he said.

 even heard a mom was arrested for cheering for her kid

That's ridiculous, also how did the Principal know he'd get all that applause anyway that he'd already prepared a note for this kid. Does he always have this note in the other hand and decide on the spot whether a graduate gets a dipolma or community service. How does cheering affect his performance in the classroom?

I have never been more proud of my hometown than I am in this moment .

That's ridiculous. How is it his fault if other people are cheering too much?

I wouldn't do the community service either.

Graduation ceremonies are a popularity contest.. always has been. I ****ing hate high school.. lol.

How ******ed is this? Very.

It's basically saying you passed go, but don't collect your 200. Way to improve morale of your students, Mr. Principal!

You know this Principal hasn't gotten laid in years.

It holds up the ceremony. The principal prolly had a hot date he needed to get home to.

Is there a rule against this or something?
Yep.

At my high school graduation, they actually had the audacity to say that a student's diploma would be withheld if their family/friends were "unruly." And by "unruly," I mean "cheering too loudly." But apparently the students tossing a beach ball around throughout the entire ceremony is A-OK :whatever:.

That principal is on some ego trip. He'd get an ass whooping in my hometown for some stupid **** like this. After 13 years in school a little frivolity and cheering is expected. ****ing *****e knozzle.

Refresh my memory, but isn't the piece of paper they give you at roll the actual diploma? How can you withhold a diploma just as the kid is about to take it? I don't see why it matters anyway. No college requires to actually see it. It's just a piece of paper, your transcript is what matters.

Messed up. Cue the change.org petition in 3... 2... 1.....

At both my high school and college, the "diploma" they handed you was just a place holder. You either had to pick it up afterwards or they'd mail it to you.

Ah, I see. Too long ago for me to remember or care. I think mine is long lost by now.

Schools typically don't like for graduations to become party times. Not surprised a principal finally snapped because of people whooping.

I thought for high school they just gave it you, college you just got the place holder since grades typically weren't ready before the graduation ceremony.

I remember my Principal asking everyone to simply applaud for everyone who came on the stage and to show love for everyone who worked so hard.

He was kind of a hippy though.

It depends on the school. The high schools in my district give you the diploma. A friend of mine just got a place holder.

The college I went to gave you the cover as you walked across the stage and you'd get your diploma in the room we first meet in. Or you might not get it if you owed them money. Another friend of mine went to a different college and he got his diploma as he walked across.

Either way, this principal's reason doesn't make any sense.

I hope no one seriously thinks he's going to actually do 20 hours of community service to pick up his diploma.

Because...that's laughable.
