But, but Michael Clark Duncan CAN'T be "Captain Marvel" ! We all KNOW that he is REALLY "The Kingpin". Are you people trying to make Cap EVIL ? Horror !:wow: "The Rock" might work well as "Black Adam" by the way. I'm not sure WHO I would cast as" Captain Marvel".

If I was casting this movie I would pick someone like George Eads who actually looks the part.
George_Eads.jpg

Superman, your choice for BIG RED is a GREAT choice.
Patrick Warburton is another AMAZING pick for CAPTAIN MARVEL.

I understand all of you guys point of views on the subject matter.
Mr. Johnson is my CAPTAIN MARVEL!
Mr. Welling is my SUPERMAN!

:word: To be comic book readers you guys are lacking in the imagination dept. :wow: :csad:

dpm07 :

What should the Story be?
I personal wouldn't mind a take on First Thunder without Superman. Its got it all, an origin, Cap kicking Robot ass, demons, and a sense of Humor only Cap can deliver.

....Are you even a fan of Captain Marvel after reading thing I don't believe so.

^^The Rock

^^Not the Rock.

Any Questions?

You have proved absolutely NOTHING. What are you getting at? Is it because The Rock is not white? Is it a race thing? He's a pretty good actor and he's got the perfect build.

As for the pic comparison, that's like going:

:whatever:

Get the picture? Good.

Mr. Socko, that has everything to do with it. IMHO!
See Big Red is a white character and to stay true too the comics Mr. Johnson is a very poor, poor choice.
I have always felt that the Captain Marvel storyline, would make more sense with a non white guy as CM. Hell! who knows, maybe DC would not have brought out Fawcett Comics.
Being white, made Captain Marvel a bootleg SUPERMAN. :csad:
Now! that the new Superman film leave much to be desired, a very good "classic" Captain Marvel film would destroy the Superman film franchise. Warner Brothers, will not have any of that! IMHO of course.
The Rock has the essence of the character, hairline, body type and acting chops, he'll do a great job.

My casting finalist are:
1. Patrick Warburton
2. George Eads
3. Michael McLafferty  (Jackson Bostwick type)
4. Tyler Christopher  (bootleg welling type)
5. Kyle Chandler
6. open
7. Dwayne Johnson

I always wonder, would the same people who think theres no problem with Captain Marvel or superman not being white, feel the same if say, A Black Panther movie were made is which t'challa was played by Nicholas Cage?

In all fairness, being black is a pretty big part of Black Panther's history. He's not Black Panther if he's white, and I dont just mean because of the name.

Similarly, being white is part of Superman's history. He grew up in Kansas and was adopted by 2 white farmers and raised as their own (at least in some continuities). Not to mention making him black would change his upbringing, and reflect on his character quite a bit.

But with Captian Marvel, it doens't really matter. In fact, some could even argue (as they have in this thread) that being a minority would reflect some of his character traits pretty well.

Of course, the truth is that with comics being a visual medium, looks are important to a lot of people. There's nothing wrong with wanting a live action Captain Marvel to look like he does on the page, whether it's regarding skin color, hair color, face, or body build.

*Puts Billy Batson on list of posters to ignore*

:csad: boo hoo! whoa is me :csad:
No one will ever talk too me again, because StorminNorman, said so!
:woot: dude your funny.

Stormin you should have ignored that post, why even respond to such an idiotic comment?

 it rocks! to be on your little list Dr. StorminNorman SURESH .. :cwink:

My issue with Johnson is that he wouldn't be playing Captain Marvel. He'd be playing The Rock. He's not that good an actor.

He's good.
Ask him.
I dare you.

He hasn't 'played' The Rock since he started making movies.
Johnson could do it, and he'd make the spirit of Cap'n Marvel kick the be****tinjeebers out of the Superman franchise-(IMHO)

If Ghostrider can make the pile of money it has, and all it has going for it is some awesome special effects (and awesome T&A) then The Rock as the Cap'n, with a good script, would rule.
BWaahhaaaahhahaahaah!
(Sorry, to much manga, lately.)

Shazam! We've Got a Writer
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
March 9, 2007

John August has been hired to write Shazam!, New Line Cinema's adaptation of a DC Comics series featuring Captain Marvel, says The Hollywood Reporter. Peter Segal is attached to direct and also is producing with Michael Ewing.

The comic book series focuses on Billy Batson, a teenager who becomes the superhero known as Captain Marvel when he utters the magic word "Shazam!" The name is an acronym for six gods and heroes of the ancient world as well as their attributes: the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Aries, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury.

August has worked on such films as Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Big Fish.

"It's a unique opportunity to do a comic book movie where the character in it actually read comic books," said August, who has started writing the script. "What's terrific about the character is that he looks like this superstudly superhero but is really a 13-year-old boy. And to approach everything that is great about a superhero movie from a 13-year-old boy's perspective was a unique way in."

August sat down with noted DC Comics writer Geoff Johns for "idiot checking," making sure the filmmakers' approach to the character was consistent with what fans love about him. "I think we're going to be able to be really faithful to the mythology and yet make it completely transparent for people who have no idea who the character is," August said.

Chris Godsick and Michael Uslan (Constantine) are executive producing.

^This sounds like good news to me! Is there anything else we should know about this guy??

The Rock for Captain Marvel? No. Just Hell. No. However, I *MIGHT* be open to him as Black Adam, *MIGHT*. He looks a lot like him, and could easily pass for a middle eastern, and he's starting to become a fairly decent actor, at least a lot better than most wrestler turned actors.

As for Captain Marvel. Well Patrick Warburton is about as perfect for it as Lucy Lawless is for Wonder Woman. Unfortunately though, both of them are a bit too old at this point.

I really like George Eads for hte role, but I have a feeling they're going to go with someone with a little more star power for the role. I know CSI is a mega hit show and all, but he really doesn't have a prominent film career.

Jerry O Connell did a great job voicing Captain Marvel on JLU but I dont think he has the physical look to pull it off.

However, his brother Charlie O'Connell (Sliders), also an actor, looks the part alot nowadays:

I'm pretty sure I know who's going to play Captain Marvel... and you guys aren't going to like it.

What I've noticed is a lot of directors like to use the same actors over and over to star in their films. Think Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, or Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale. So guess who's starred in Director Peter Segal's last 3 films?

...Adam Sandler!

Now, don't shoot me for bringing it up, because I don't like it either, but you have to admit that Adam Sandler isn't a terrible physical approximation of Captain Marvel, and would make a lot of sense (at least to Hollywood executives and such) to have him portray Cap in a more family friendly movie. Plus he's a big star and that's important for a character like Captain Marvel who has no big name recognition of his own (Or at least hasn't for the past 50 years)

So I'm about 80% sure Captain Marvel will be played by Adam Sandler, and if you were to bear with me and say that the Spider-Man and X-Men movies are like Lord of the Rings movies, well this movie will be more like the Chronicles of Narnia movies (If you get the comparison).

And now, the answer to speculation about why I was busy reading up on DC Comics mythology. As announced today in The Hollywood Reporter, I’m writing Captain Marvel. And I’m very, very stoked.

The movie is set up at New Line, with Pete Segal attached to direct. For those who aren’t rabid fans of the character, here’s the briefest of introductions.1

Captain Marvel is a superhero roughly as powerful as Superman, minus the heat-vision and cold breath.2 What’s unique about the character is that in ordinary life, he’s teenager Billy Batson. Speaking the name of the wizard who gave him his powers (Shazam) calls down a magic thunderbolt, transforming him into the studly superhero. But he’s still a teenager in there. If this to you sounds, “Like Big, but with superpowers,” then congratulations! You now understand Hollywood.

The process of getting hired to write it has taken months. It started with a call from my agent, asking, “Hey, have you ever heard of Captain Marvel?”
The answer was an enthusiastic yes. I was vaguely aware of the character growing up,3 but it wasn’t until the character’s recent resurgence in the DC Comics universe that I started paying attention. Not more than a month before my agent’s call, I’d read a JSA and thought to myself…Someone should make a Captain Marvel movie. And now they were.

Pete Segal and producing parter, Michael Ewing, had already signed on, so the next step was meeting with them and figuring out if we shared the same tone for the movie. It’s not Spider-Man plus jokes. It’s a comic book movie where the characters in it read comics. The story needs to be funny and dramatic even if the villain never shows up. (Don’t worry, there’s a great villain.)
Once we agreed on the framework for the movie, Geoff Johns from DC was gracious enough to come in and idiot-check it for us. Having witnessed the uproar over Spidey’s organic web-shooters, we were all sensitive towards cavalierly changing things. Fortunately, Captain Marvel is pretty movie-friendly already, so we hadn’t bent or broken any mythology.
Between my time at Sundance and Pete’s prep schedule for his next movie (Get Smart), it took weeks to get a meeting with New Line. Going in for the pitch, I was warned that there would be a lot of people in the room. But I wasn’t prepared for the fact that four of the attendees would be sitting in by videoconference. It was incredibly awkward, but I got through it. And I got the job.

In my head, the movie’s called Captain Marvel, but for legal reasons, it will almost certainly be some variation on Shazam! I grumble because people will inevitably assume that the hero’s name is Shazam, when it’s not — Shazam is the old wizard. It’s like calling the Harry Potter movies “Dumbledore.” Then again, the hero isn’t a Captain, and doesn’t live in the Marvel universe. So you’re going to have confusion either way.

I can already anticipate the natural questions which will come up, most of which I can only answer, “I don’t know” or “I’m not allowed to say.” And I should re-iterate the standard disclaimer: most movies don’t get made. But I’m really hoping this one does.

In today's NY Daily News, it's reported that director Peter Segal wants Jake Gyllenhaal for the role. Don't know if this is new news or not, but I thought i'd post it anyway.
