It has officially been announced that Duane "The Rock" Johnson is first in line to play Captain Marvel in the upcoming movie, Shazam. Many comic book and wrestling fans will finally have something to talk to each other about The screenplay is currently being written for the movie, but the producers are already working on trying to attach as many big names to the project as possible. During an interview that was posted on SciFi.com, the Rock has been approached about playing the staring role, and has accepted.

The movie is being planned for a 2008 release, and is being written by John August, William Golman, and Bryan Goluboff. Between these three men, movies such as Corpse Bride, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Misery, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and The Basketball Diaries have all come into fruition.

The director has not been announced as of the writing of this article. With the success of superhero films over the last few decades, it is expected that a director that is well known will be brought in for the project.

It is interesting that Captain Marvel was chosen for a movie because of the lack of knowledge that many current comic book readers have of the character. With movies being written about the Green Lantern, the Hulk, Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, it is interesting that a film studio would be interested in producing a movie about a character that many might say is a fairly obscure hero. This is a good reason for attempting to add big names early to the project.

Captain Marvel was commonly referred to by the word that Billy Batson would use to turn into Captain Marvel, which is, "Shazam." Marvel comics came out with a character with the same name after DC comic let the trademark slip into their hands. DC would then have Captain Marvel referred to as Shazam in the comics for many years to avoid infringement.

Shazam is actually the 9,000-year-old wizard that granted the powers of a superhero to teenager Billy Batson. His name was an acronym for six gods and heroes of the ancient world, and their abilities.

Whenever Billy Batson would change into Captain Marvel, he would call for the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, Atlas's stamina, Zeus's immense power, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of the god Mercury. It was much easier to just yell, "Shazam!"

While the Rock has made multiple comments that he is not interested in returning to wrestling, many wrestling fans will at least get part of what they wanted. These fans will have the chance to see the Rock fight bad guys in tights once again.

isnt this an old article BB?

i thought the last news on this is that The Rock is considering Black Adam?

Look, I've seen alot of casting rumours for this movie but there is only one man who can play Captain Marvel and that's Patrick Warburton. There's not another person who even looks remotely like him. He's perfect for the role and anyone one else will just ruin it.

Don't get me wrong, I like Warburton, but I don't know if he's really right for the role. Maybe when he was younger, but now, I just don't see it. I could always be wrong, though.

As far as looks go, Molale couldn't be more perfect. Not so confident in his acting history, but then again, Brandon Routh's resume was far from stellar and he won me over.

From what I can tell it is up in the air, though I think the suits are leaning towards the Rock for the Cap. (see comingsoon's interview.. http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=20302 this seems to suggest that at least the director is considering him..) Now, Molale suggested the Rock for Black Adam but that's about it... from what I know

BB, Linky please.

If you want my honest opinion, I'd rather see Molale than Johnson as the Cheese. Besides, who doesn't want to play a villain at some point in time?

The Linky is posted next to the Captain Marvel IMG.

Steelsheen you may be correct  about the article.
The Rock considering Black Adam is only hearsay, there is more noise / buzz around him portraying BIG RED (drop the cheese) :yay:.

According to what AICN Moriarty was told by the Rock himself, the director talked with Dawyne of both roles.

honestly, i would much rather have The Rock play Black Adam. i think he would do good in the role, he would certainly get a kick out of it and can bring it to a whole different level of badass-ness :woot:

Hey, I just went on Brandon's website and signed the petition thinking it would be a great thing for the director to see, but the response is rather disappointing so far, only 300+ sigs. Everyone who wants Molale for CM should not only go sign this petition (it only takes about 30 seconds) but promote it and get others to sign it. Put it in your sigs so others on the board will see it and vote.

A few years ago, when the Rock was first mentioned as a possible canidate...I balked..this was NOT captain marvel! Sure he had the build..but that was about it. Remeber at the time he was transitioning into films but hadn't shown a lot of ability as of yet. Even recently I was "meh" about it...and I saw Brandon's pic and THAT WAS CAPTAIN MARVEL. I was discussing the casting rumors with a buddy a month or so ago, and he is a big Rock fan, as well as a comic fan. He thought the Rock could pull off the Cap qualities. So to prove him wrong I got some of his films...and then noticed the guy was a pretty decent actor....and there was something about him..he just seems like a nice guy. I still couldn't put my finger on what it was that was winning me over to him possibly playing Cap..then I read Moriarty's interview at AICN...and he nailed it
"Look, standing face to face with Dwayne Johnson, the guy is the right choice for either role. He’d make a killer bad guy, having fun with it, and he’s certainly got the look to pull off Black Adam. But there’s also a decency to him that’s almost immediate when you’re talking to him, this open quality. I told him what it is that has always made Captain Marvel such an interesting character in my opinion"

that pretty much sums up what I had been feeling but couldn't articulate. Listen, if Molale is Cap...GREAT..I trust them to pick a guy who can act...and he does look like he stepped off the pages of a comic...but if they do cast the Rock...I would be fine with that as well...based on the sentiments above...I really think he could pull it off...which means I have come pretty far from where I was. And regarding the race thing...meh...I have thought about it, and while I am and always will be a cap junkie at heart, I am (now) not bothered if they do go with Duane. Here is my thinking...in the Comics..is he white? of course...is cap an icon though ....no. He is one character you could present as a different race and the general public wouldn't be saying...(as they would with Supes or Bats..or Spidey...etc)..."..why isn't he white.??" I know as a fanboy myself, that other fanboys would say it....all I am saying is there is some room for that when the character isn't an Icon fixed in the american conscience..that's all.

oh and by the way Antonello..I emailed him a while back..as well as yesterday....nothin so far..I checked his website...he is off to africa for a while it seems...so who knows if we will hear from him on the status of the script....if at all...sigh..

Wow...

Fanboy 1 "if a no name actor who may or may not be able to act, but does bear a strong resemblance to the way the character is drawn by Alex Ross isn't cast - this movie will suck"

Fanboy 2: "Totally, he looks JUST LIKE CAPTAIN MARVELLL!!111!!one!"

Reasonable fan 1:

StorminNorman: *hits Fanboy 1 in the face and then throws a car at fanboy 2*

I second this.

Oh, and catlas, you know, Black Adam is actually a fallen hero. Johnson has the herois qualities you said (and I agree with you). Considering that Black Adam was a hero, the first Captain Marvel if you will, then I could see him playing that part (as its within his nature), and then get to do something new in playing a villain.

To be honest, though I'd rather Molale as Cap, I can't say Johnson wouldn't work. Like you said, he's not iconic, so they can play around with him a bit.

It is very hard to pick one (which is why I abstain from the polls) for a role. And I'm not one to be too picky, either.

That's what I'm talking about catlas.
My feelings exactly. :woot:

Can someone tell me why this film is not called "Captain Marvel" or "Shazam~The Adventures Of Captain Marvel"?

Y'know, I don't read the comics and don't know much about Captain Marvel but one of my teachers a few months ago was talking to me about Marvel, saying he's one of his favorites, I asked him that very question(why it's called Shazam and not C.M.) He told me because of a lawsuit and some kind of rights only allowing them to use the name Captain Marvel in the comic and not on any covers.

that's pretty much it. Captain Marvel folded in the 50's due to a lawsuit by DC (claiming infringement ..Cap was too much like Supes) they just stopped the title. The name was up for grabs...Marvel used it and now DC can't title their books with it....so they went with Shazam! and sometimes a subtitle underneath it or above it (....the original captain marvel...or the power of..SHAZAM..etc...)
