John August on Shazam!

Source: Los Angeles Times
July 21, 2007

The Los Angeles Times talked to screenwriter John August about adaptating Shazam!, for which the movie will be set in present day. Here's a clip:

I mentioned to August that two years ago I chatted with one of the "Shazam!" producers, Michael E. Uslan, and he told me even then that any Captain Marvel movie’s great challenge would be answering one question: If you were a little kid who could turn into an all-powerful, handsome adult, why on Earth would you ever change back? August’s answer: "That's absolutely a key part of the movie. Billy doesn’t want to turn back, that’s central to the story. And a lot of the movie hinges upon that and Billy’s relationship with his best friend and that disparity. They are two teen friends and then suddenly one of them is 30 and a hero. So it creates tension. You know, as a screenwriter, that’s the thing, to take what seems to be a problem and make it a key element of the story. But Michael hit it on the head, that’s one of the emotional cores of this story. So to me it's a great problem to have."

So I guess this means Freddy Freeman is in the movie.

Ugh, oh my god that sounds.... good.

It's always a good sign when they're focusing on the concepts behind the character rather than just focusing on what they appear to be from on the surface.

Like for instance, Chris Nolan could have made Batman just some guy who runs around in a cape and cowl beating up criminals, or Bryan Singer could have made the X-men a group of two-dimensional characters with super powers, but instead Nolan put a lot of focus on who Batman was deep down, and what drove him to become what he became, and Singer focused on the idea of prosecuting others for simply being different than them.

Then of course at the other end of the spectrum you have the first Fantastic Four film, where for example, (though they began to fix this in the sequel:) Johnny was just a clown who made jokes all of the time, he was written as just a two-dimensional character with nothing below the surface. Essentially: What you see, is what you get.

The fact that, this early in the game, they're talking about concepts that go a bit deeper than just surface makes me actually very excited about this film that, before, almost seemed doomed to failure. This is good news, very good news.

I would love to see a cameo of Routh as Superman in the movie.

No, they need to keep Capt. from looking like a Superman rip.

On a side note, the idea of the friendship strain was an idea i had. he stole my story.:cmad: :woot:

I'm sorry but The Rock doesn't look anything like Capt. Marvel!

 How did you come to that conclusion after reading that article from The LA Times?

No, they need to keep Capt. from looking like a Superman rip.

Psst! Captain Marvel is a rip of SUPERMAN.:o
Having Dwayne Johnson portray Captain Marvel in the film, would change that in a way.:cwink:

That we can agree on. I'm really interested on how he'll portray Billy with the power since a 13 year old is different from a 7 year old. Will he not realize how much this is hurting his friend?

I just guessed since Freddy is in the comics.

I'm glad the studio doesn't agree with you!

Well Norm3, I'm glad you & the studio are very pleased with that under performing excuse of a SUPERMAN. :csad:
I on the other hand, desire much more from KRYPTON'S LAST SON.

Oh, snap!:woot: Wait, people don't say that anymore do they?

I think you got him there. Good comeback:up:

How upsetting will it be, when the media begin calling CAPTAIN MARVEL "SUPERMAN of this generation".
I hope this film do a :trans: @ the Box office.
All that $$$, will have The WB, New Line and DC fighting over, who ideal was it to have Dwayne "THE Rock" Johnson portray Captain Marvel.

Routh was perfect for Supes IMO. And the synopsis above sounds like they're going for a remake of 'Big'.

'Big' with tights, the suits would see it that way.
Hollywood need another film (business model) to compare it with.

That's what they described the story as. Big with superheroes. There are a lot worse movies to base the story on, Goonies.:oldrazz:

If theyre going the lighthearted 'Big' route with it; I'd prefer someone like Jerry O'Connell who can actually do comedy.

I understand now, it was O'Connell's voice.
I support that casting choice only if Routh remain Supes.
We cannot have Captain Marvel looking manlier than Superman. :cwink:

Brandon will remain as Superman. Theres no actual concrete proof that they have any reservations about him or want to replace him.

Captain Marvel doesnt necessarily have to be huge though. Did you see the CM serials? Marvel's costume has that padded shoulder look (like a dress suit or Brandon and Dwayne's jackets in the above pics). He doesnt have to wear super tight tights like Superman.

Would probably look better than the Spider-man/Superman tights material.

I could definitely see O'Connell making it look right visually;

That would be pretty funny.

Jerry O'Connell also did the voice of Nightwing on "The Batman" in a future set episode I believe was titled "Artifacts".

I love the Captain Marvel serials, Sorry but Ward Clever as Captain Marvel is out of style now. Please give me a dude with some muscles, who look like he can lift a locomotive with his bare hands.

Stop it with the guys, whom look like they can barely bench press 150lbs 1 time. :csad:
Sad how you compare a movie made in the 40's with a movie made for the 20th century. Singerman's body type is on par with the non physiques of the 40's.
I want Captain Marvel too look like, he can go blow for blow with the HULK.
