Check out how stringy and weak Routh look in his suit.
Dwayne look beefy and strong in his suit.
Routh's jacket is very lose on him, poor guy need pads for a dress suit. :csad:

Not to mention this dude, look at the pecs under that lighting bolt.

Routh also looks taller than Dwayne there, and Dwayne is generally listed as 6'4" while Routh for the most part has been listed as either 6'2" or 6'3". Has he really been 6'5" all along, or is he just wearing lifts to get an extra inch on Dwayne?

Anyhow, I too would prefer Captain Marvel to be played by a guy who actually has a more pronounced muscular appearance and looks like he could go, as you say, one on one with the Hulk.

The WB made him wear lifts. :woot:

Now that's a huge dude.

:yay: :up:

Thats what happens when you compare pro wrestlers and bodybuilders with actors.

I'd rather go with someone whos convincing as an actor than the Rock. Molale deserves a screentest but considering he'll be near 40 by the time this thing finally comes out...and hes never been given a serious acting gig prior at his age; doesnt inspire me with much confidence about his ability or lack of.

Fate, these don't look like lifts;

They look like the same type of shoes Rock is wearing;

The other main issue is the fact that WB specifically wanted the SR build for Superman before Routh was even confirmed in the role. They claimed they didnt want the overly muscular type for it.

It's certainly possible they may not want it for Capt Marvel either.

What's wrong with a 40 year old guy playing Captain Marvel? Michael Keaton was almost 40 when he played Batman back in 1989, and that one still ranks as one of the most successful films - superhero or otherwise - ever made.

Fate, I think Ive been overestimating you. Read my post again. I wasnt knocking the concept of a 40 yr old playing a superhero but the fact that Molale would be near 40 with no previous experience.

I was commenting on my reservations of him as an actor when he hasnt got any decent roles that late in life except Bonehead #4; perhaps a testament to his acting ability.

The fact that they've explicitly stated that Cap Marvey will be 30 in this film. Other than that it's not so much that he's too old, so much as that he's older than ideal. If they can't find anyone younger, and better, than by all means go with this guy, but I would at least keep an eye out for someone younger who could do the job.

Well, the Rock was a wrestler... I'd test him.
Here's Matt Leinart with Sivana.

He's also been an established actor for the past 7 years or so. Nobody would even be mentioning his name had he not already had acting experience. Ther's a BIG difference. I shutter to think what films would be like if everyone acted like people here and just cast body builders and athletes with no prior acting experience for roles simply because they "look" the part.

Thank goodness your not a casting director Blueberry....... :dry:

Don't forget NFL Football is a real sport; WWE is entertainment with crappy actors. The Rock always has been in the 'entertainment' biz.

This guys an actual athlete...

My apologies.

I was kidding about the lifts, BTW.

It's because the Rock hunches in every single picture. Thats why Brandon looks taller.

You realize that all that means is the Rock can afford a better tailor.:whatever:

Man, I'm not Routh's #1 fan or anything but the hate on the guy makes me feel for him sometimes.

To tell the truth, I did that too.
And as the Rock there are lots of people in the business who didn't come from a traditional acting career.
Think of Vinnie Jones, Sean Connery, Kristanna Loken or all the former models.
I would prefer a real actor for the role but I am open to someone new with the right look and attitude.

I'm not happy with the choice personally. I really don't want to see this made out to be a comedic/campy farce of a movie. I would much rather see it as an epic fantasy superhero family movie. Something along the lines of a cross between Harry Potter and Superman with a wee little bit of comedy/campiness being ok. I would cast John Cena as Cap, Dwayne(The Rock) Johnson as Black Adam, and Christopher Lee as Shazam.

After seeing the Cap manip, I think he would be a perfect Black Adam.

Welcome to the 2000s, nobody cares...:whatever:

Kingpin was black, and his character was BASED on a white guy from The Maltese Falcon.

Betty Brant was made black in the Spider-Man animated series.

Now Captain "Shazam" Marvel is suppose to be the embodiment of several greek era Gods, therefore it actually stands to reason he would be "tanner" than a typical White American. And last time I checked most Superheroes are tan and have darker complexitions as it is generally considered more attractive than patsy and white.

Yes, this I actually agree with which is why I have trouble casting him as Captain Marvel because he would also own as Black Adam...may be the perfect fit for him. However I also would say his acting career points much more towards the light hearted and uplifting Captain Marvel than Black Adam...who is a veritable bastard.

Yeah...ummm...lets keep Cena as far away from Hollywood as possible. He might have the build to play a range of characters from Captain America to Aquaman and all places in between...but the man is a joke to watch. And just because Captain Marvel doesn't strike you as deep, doesn't mean he doesn't require acting skill. It seems to me it would be pretty hard to act the part of a boy trapped in a man's body...in fact with movies like Big already considered classics, I'd say you could expect a lot from a film like this. Captain Marvel could be very well served played off much like Hank's character, and that would take an immense amount of acting ability. Having to deal with damsels in distress, villains, death, love, and all those "adult concepts" while being a boy at heart actually makes for a far more complex character than say someone like Green Lantern, Flash or the multitude of other adult heroes.

Na. He's right. I've seen it too many times in the friggin Batman forums to think otherwise. Somebody even ponders if Frank Miller's Catwoman was black, theres an uproar not shortly after the fact. People do care, and I wouldn't say it's too far fetched to believe it's because of the reasons he mentioned. It's sad but true.

Still though, lookin at the Rock with his slick smile, he just looks like Black Adam to me. Thumbs up to that choice. I don't know who the hell could play Cap though.

Honestly IMO GL1, I think you'd find people of alot of ethnicites that might have a problem with Johnson as Cap as opposed to BA, just for the simple fact that Dwayne plays a much better villian than a hero, race not being an issue with them. But there are those people, as you said, who want Cap to be "Captain Whitebread" and not the Samoan equivelent. That being said, on to Cena....if it doesn't take much to play Cap, then why stick Dwayne in that role????? Why not throw David Batista in Cap's boots? He's big, physically intimidating and doesn't have much in the way of acting skills?! Cap is as just as an important piece of the puzzle as who's cast to play Billy so you just can't throw anyone who looks good in the golden boots. Personally, Rock is just as good for Cap or BA as Vosloo is for BA and race has never been a factor for me: I just want the actor who is the embodiment of Cap, just as Lynda Carter was for my generation's WW, Michael Keeton's Batman, George Reeves' and Christopher Reeves' Superman and Tom Tyler's Cap. You can look at Reb Brown's Captain America perfomances to see what happens when you just throw anyone into a role!

:up:

I don't think white people are nearly as put out over white characters being portrayed by people of other ethnicities or races as black people would be if a major black character was played by someone of another race (can anyone imagine Shaft played by Steven Segal?). Fortunately for the black fans, I don't think that's been an issue so far. I could easily make an argument for Vin Diesel as Luke Cage that would be every bit as viable as the reasons MCD was a good choice for Kingpin.

In the case of the Rock as Cap, I don't think anyone is saying he shouldn't play the part because of his race. I thinkit has more to do with the fact that he is not a very versatile actor, and is simply not the actor for the part. I remember when someone wanted Randy Savage as Wolverine! Yeah he could do the 'berzerker rage' bit and everything but I don't think his acting would have been much more than 1-dimensional.

Hey, I'd think if you were a Cap fan, you'd hope for a bit more quality than just someone who would look good in the costume but whatever. I've seen my favorite superhero done justice on the big screen for the most part. I wish the same for all comic fans in relation to their individual favorites as well.

I'm right there with you on everything bro! But Vin Diesel wouldn't get ****ted on for being picked for Luke Cage cause of his race...... if ya know what I mean.

How about Jerry O Connell as Shazam?

Yeah hes my lead choice. Suggested him on the previous page;

Great actor, great with comedy etc

I prefer Arnold Vosloo for Black Adam. Great actor; badass on 24. Great evil presense. Best choice.
