Shazam!!!

Well its nice to hear shazam still has some steam going after what looked to be it being in developmental hell like flash/ww and probably now hex if they cant get a new director on that.

umm.. are they officially calling it Captain Marvel now? did they pay a licensing fee to Marvel, since they technically own the name?

(and if so, how would this bode for a Mar-Vell adaptation.. dun-dun-dunn...)

well who knows maybe it will still be titled shazam in the film title/promotions with captain marvel being said within the film. I dont think the who copyright on the name captain marvel with dc and marvel's captain marvel are over.

this is good news I think, it shows that coming out of the DC summit that captain marvel is on their to do list otherwise they wouldn't have aquired the production

Oh, I don't think that WB will lose Superman, given they own pretty much everything that matters about the character (eg his villains, supporting cast, etc). The Superman the creators' estates would hold would be the original 1938 Superman, who could leap an eighth of a mile, was faster than a locomotive, bulletproof, and stronger than 10 (or was it 100?) men.
Maybe so but WB wouldn't have their Superman, either.

They'd lose more then the Shusters and Siegels.

The character would be nigh-unrecognisable, and probably wouldn't sell.

Probably but it might do better then you think. Given a proper revamp, access to other mediums an the Superman/Clark Kent/Lois lane recognizability it could do magnificently. Not the current status quo but WB didn't make that happen over night.

The estates want the dosh - they'll settle and lease the copyright (or something like that). WB will be able to make Superman movies, but they'll have to do extremely well due to the royalties going to the Shusters and Seigels.

Of course it'll do well. It's Superman. It's not just movies, either. Comics, tv shows, video-games, cartoons, merchandise are a goldmine.

The estates getting the royalties shuldn't impact all that profit. WB would still getting truckloads of money, just not all of it.

I highly doubt there would ever be a Mar-vell adaptation

I don't know, they get a good enough script, it's entirely possible. If they're considering a Deadpool movie, I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to do a Mar-Vell one.

Deadpool is only happening since he's in Wolverine.

The only reason he's in Wolverine is so they can test the waters on whether or not a DP movie could work. Hell, if they ever got around to making a Silver Surfer Movie a Kree Captain by the Name of Mar-Vell could show up or whatever. Anythings possible.

I dont think thats the only reason. Deadpool is directly tied to Wolverine and the Weapon X program.

Whether or not a project gets greenlit depends on a lot. Mar-Vell isnt crazy, and neither is Deadpool, but some of these stories are certainly pet projects. Avi Arad has admitted to loving Deadpool and loving the idea of Reynolds as Deadpool, and Reynolds has always been way more adament about DP than Flash. It was bound to happen in some form.

I'd consider Deadpool crazy.

Mar-Vell wasn't crazy but Genis-Vell was. Not that a Mar-Vell film wouldn't be cool to watch.

Genis has always been my favorite Captain Marvel, but a Mar-Vell film could work. I mean, if the WB is succesful with GL (should they ever get the damn thing made) Marvel may feel the presure to deliver a space epic of their own, and why the hell not Captain Mar-Vell? Especially if they can get it out before SHAZAM, just to f**k with the WB. lulz.

Agreed.

Man, a Captain Mar-vell movie would positively rock; it'd probably be kinda similiar to the upcoming Green Lantern movie I imagine - who knows, if GL's is a hit, maybe that'll get Marvel Studios thinking $$$$.

Not to mention they'd be putting out a movie that would be bearing their name (you can see the movie poster now, can't you? the MARVEL art would be in big letters)

Im normally loathe to cast 'flavour of the month' actors who get seen in one movie and then seemingly get suggested for everything on here but I'm gonna buck the trend in this case:-

Aaron Eckhart is Jim Starlins depiction of Mar-vell to a 't'.

Not that he's do it, of course.

(and sorry to hi-jack the thread with talk of the 'rival')

You know, I think Eckhart would work quite nicely as Mar-Vell.

It's the cleft chin and the blond hair;

Also, Starlin always seemed to draw CM as looking more 'mature' than the other heroes - that just seems to fit Eckhart.

He comes off as a 'mature' kinda guy.

Someone expressing interest in being in a movie doesnt mean that anyone has expressed interest in putting him in it, it appears to be a comment he left on his myspace page or something.

well since its wiki not really a reliable site for news as many knows that.

So from what I read, the script was heavily based on (or influenced by) the Power of Shazam ongoing right?

I don't know but that would be a good place to start, along with JSA by Geoff Johns

I agree that Power of Shazam would make a pretty good template, but not a straight adaptation because storywise, it's got a lot of problems that wouldn't play very well onscreen, IMO.

I don't think a straight word-for-word adaptation would work either, that's not what I meant. Also, Tawky Tawny should be excluded IMO.
