Shazam!!!

To quote the Prez-Elect, um, Yes We Can!

My point is that WB learned exactly the wrong lesson from TDK's success. It didn't succeed just because it was dark, it was a billion dollar movie because it respected its source material. It was just a coincidence that the source material is "Dark". For "Shazam," making it into an "edgy, darker" movie betrays what the characters are about. Read Jeff Smith's "Monster Society of Evil." That's how Captain Marvel should be portrayed. (I've said it before, August's "Big with super powers" pitch is perfect.)

Totally agreed.

Not surprised by this news, but again, WB are making the wrong approach to the character if they are making him dark and edgy. I'm not an expert on Captain Marvel, but even someone like me KNOWS he isnt a dark and edgy character.

the early fawcett stuff was pretty dark in tone. Look at freddie freeman, he is fishing with his grandfather and captain nazi landed there after being punched by cap. His grandfather tries to help the guy but is killed and freddie is crippled. He becomes CM3 out of CM's guilt. thats not happy go lucky in the slightest

WB's main reason for cancelling a superhero film should be that it wasn't faithful enough to the material, not that it wasn't dark or edgy enough. I thought WB was getting their act together with these DC superhero projects, apparently not. I'm expecting to hear soon that GL has hit a major bump and that will be shelved as well.

Expect to just see Batman and Superman films as far as DC superhero films are concerned. :down

yea i just read about this news a few hrs ago. Sad to see another dc project fall through once again. I agree they need to get away from this dark ideal only characters that fit this dark edge is bats, watchmen, and a few other characters were as flash/gl should be more action adventure light hearted like spidey/im films. As for shazam hopefully things can turn again and wb can see its mistake. Well it looks like wb is still confused as hell what to do with any dc characters.

I said this in another thread but I'm calling it first that the Smallville writers will try to turn Shazam into a drama/spinoff on CW now...with the film project being dead.

They're like scavengers for dead DC projects.

But the news of the film being dead is disapointing indeed.

possible but right now another smallville like show for shazam isnt likely to happen on cw as long as dawn o the president is still in charged. She is so gun ho for the show to be targeted to woman 18-35 and turn it into another lifetime like channel which is a mistake.

Warner canceled "Shazam" because it was not Dark enought? That's confirmed?

dammit. i was really looking forward to this. they even got The Rock involved and interfaced with the fans. so that WB summit was just for show huh? typical of WB. i bet the only thing that will get their lard arses to move is when Marvel dominates the BO with The Avengers.

If they just wanted an older Billy like Shia Leboeuf, I could live with it. but it doesn't mean Shazam has to be dark and edgy.

yea with news like this it looks like that summit changed nothing between wb and dc.

Oh yeah this sucks, what else can you expect from WB? But Shazam didn't seem to be going far anyway.

If they axe GL, which is so close to filming, than we REALLY have reason to be pissed. Supposedly the Berlanti/Guggenheim/Green script is dark and edgy enough for them and they went nuts over it in a good way.

yea i would be so pissed if we hear gl gets axed. besides hex who has a replacement director and a star still attached to the project gl was/is the more likely of characters to have actually be filming this year for next yr release. Crossing fingers we get solid casting news on gl and filming actually commening somewhere.

Right on, Webhead.....they should be ready to announce casting for GL by now.
Shazam was nowhere near that level of readiness to film, so its not a huge surprise. Presumably it being dead won't have anything to do with GL or Jonah Hex.

well i figure if they are actually set to go with gl and filming within the next 2-4 months they probably have most or all of the cast set to go or about to be officially signed and sealed because they would need a few months to get prep work in, training and costume fittings and all that. So if everything is a go as i hope it is they probably have it all set and just want to reveal it at the right moment.

I haven't read much where the character was used, but that could be because I'm not that big a fan of DC. Still, this doesn't say good things about DC films in general. I shudder to think of what a Superman film will look like if Warner Bros. continues with this infatuation for darkness over what really made The Dark Knight popular- serious storytelling.

GL's problem isn't the script it's Berlanti directing it.

This is just beyond stupid. Captain Marvel could hardly be more different from Batman, yet WB cant see any difference at all.

I have been a big supporter of an overhaul of the comic book character, as his Wonder Bread style seems dated...but that's the character...and to change that in a movie is betraying the source. Captain Marvel almost seems like an Archie comic, where you enjoy it as a kid, but sort of SHOULD grow out of it and move on to more mature fare, occasionally revisiting your youth when Jeff Smith shows up to write him. In recent years DC has turned Black Adam into a much more adult character and it almost doesnt seem right for them to cross paths.

The point is, DC will seemingly never learn. Superman should be dark and edgy (not realizing all it really lacks is big bombastic action) Shazam should be dark and edgy (not realizing how much money they can make from The Incredibles fanbase). Heck, Im sure we'll eventually hear word of a new film starring an angry, loner, dark and edgy Plastic Man.

This stinks.

this just in...Warner bros cancelled Batman Triumphant the much awaited sequel to The Dark Knight because and i quote "Not Dark Knight enough"....lol

you shouldnt make jokes like that man, you will get alot of folks mad.

Will the morons at WB learn someday that not every superhero has to be "dark"? Suspense.....

hopefully so, dc folks need to kick the wb people in the head and get them going straight. Just adapt the characters as faithfully as you can and only change small things.
