Shazam!!!

With Shazam you basically have to take...well...that Disney version of Underdog and The Dark Knight, and combine the two to split the difference. :o

What the idiots at Warner fail to recognize is that a Shazam movie, if done right, has the potential to be a Harry Potter-like franchise that can appeal to both children and adults.

Heck, the premise of the movie is essentially the same. A ten year old kid gets approached by an old wizard and finds out he has the ability to transform into a superhero? With the right blend of mysticism, humor, and action, it could have been better than Sorcerer's Stone!

Plus, it would have introduced a whole new generation to Captain Marvel. And Jeff Smith's "Monster Society" proves the Big Red Cheese can still be relevant today.

Ah well, another opportunity for WB to make good of their DC library just went down the tubes.

yea it sucks like i said last night it looks like the wb folks are still not communicating in the right way with dc and are like chickens with their heads cut off.

I sort of doubt that WB axed SHAZAM simply because it wasn't dark. More likely, the script that was proferred was just too cheesy. Now, that said, while SHAZAM is very much a lighthearted and hopeful concept, it should have some dark elements to offset that, and it should have some serious elements, themes, etc.

It sucks that WB axed SHAZAM, though.

I'm sure it would have to be, as the concept itself seems all fun filled and what not, but thinking about it...a little homeless boy who gets imbued with this god-like powers and undergoes this transformation, and has to fight these nightmare fuel creatures, I'm sure that would take a toll on his ass.

well if it ever gets off the ground again in a few years hopefully it will turn out to be a good project and not fall into the crap pile like steel, catwoman, batman and robin, etc.....

Oh well. At least we still have...

I'm sure that the script will leak in a few weeks and we'll judge by ourselves if it is cheesy. I have my doubts.

I don't think the Script is "cheesy". As August said, it was problably light-hearted and funny, a magic version of "The Incredibles". And that isn't "Dark enought".

I'm not a Warner hater like some of my friends, but that really dissapointed me. I almost could feel August's pain for having the project canceled troughout his Post. :(

I wouldnt call myself a WB hater, but they are certainly the most myopic bunch working today. WB's vision is too limited, and Fox thinks theres no limits at all. Its a very strange thing going on with comic movies.

yea hopefully they can get their heads on straight about the whole dark stuff. Though in the end we dont really know if it truly meant they wanted every character totally dark like batman or if it meant the waited tougher challenges, and bigger threats, and a darker world around the character. Hopefully they see this is what should happen and the characters themselfs dont need to be dark like batman. Heck just adapt the characters as faithfully as you can like spider-man 1 did for spidey or iron man did for iron man and with the right story, cast, crew, and marketing it could be a great film.

IESB just had an exclusive with Goyer, and Goyer confirmed that DC's property-- Batman-- accounted for the lucrative numbers WB had last year. so all DC related projects on pause until WB can get their game plan straightened out. this may or may not be related to the ******ed WB comment regarding darker is better, but if they're trying to orchestrate their comicbook movie properties the same way Marvel is then it would explain the news about Shazam. the unfortunate thing is that Shazam isnt a JL regular, Superman is, Batman is, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and the Flash are, and i'm getting the feeling that WB will prioritize them when it comes to the superhero movies. sure they'd still have other comic book related films-- Jonah Hex, Y the Last Man-- these will help fill the rest of the year while the movie of a JL-related member will be the summer (or winter?) tentpole. i'm still hoping that once the gameplan has coalesced WB can figure out a place for Shazam and we can still see this on the big screen.

I've always imaged Shazam to have that Alex Ross/Norman Rockwell look. I think the key to making a good Shazam movie is to make it as timeless as possbile.

It has been posted and discussed about already man. Also pretty much nothing new there all the films in the list there have been stuck in developmental hell for a good long while besides batman which is a given to be happening in the next 3 yrs. As for hex and gl they are the two we are likely to see happen before anyone else since they both have the most movement going currently.

Exactly. Which is why I likened a Shazam franchise to a potential Harry Potter. They have a lot of the same elements. At its heart, it's still a children's movie, though it can have some "dark" elements. But there has to be a balance, like Harry Potter. The ultimate conceit, though, the "Big with superpowers", shouldn't be discarded with August's script though. That's the most compelling part of the Shazam idea.

Shazam's in the chasm. How many more films will das Weiner Bros strike down?

And then Harry Potter will make up the difference.

I didnt say it was coming, I said its not part of the hold because they have such progress.

Well, I hope that this will work out for the best.
I mentioned before in this thread, that I thought Billy's side of the film should have a darker edge to it. I believe the WB's meaning of the term "Darker" just mean that they'll take comic book based films more seriously script wise.
Basically treating those films with the seriousness of films worthy for an Oscar, not some cheesy popcorn movie fare for the kids. Here's hoping for the best.

I'm wishing Warner Brothers a VERY profitable year and may all their comic book based franchises bring them GREAT FORTUNES in the near future and beyond.

REBOOT SUPERMAN and give birth to SHAZAM DAMN IT!!! :cmad:

Captain Marvel/Shazam Movie Still Alive? Producer Michael Uslan Hints At Film’s Future
DC’s Captain Marvel has the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules and various other attributes that provide an acronym for “SHAZAM!” (the word that transforms Billy Batson into Captain Marvel) — but what about his ability to make a move to the big screen? After the on-again, off-again project seemed to fall back into limbo last week when screenwriter John August said the Captain Marvel/Shazam film “won’t be happening,” the film’s producer Michael Uslan told MTV News that fans shouldn’t abandon hope of seeing the hero in theaters.

“I will only say one thing — and all I will do is quote Samuel Clemens to you,” hinted Uslan. “This is direct from Captain Marvel himself: ‘The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.’”

While that certainly doesn’t mean we’ll be seeing anyone utter “Shazam!” on the big screen any time soon, it should offer some hopeful signs of life for a project that many viewed as flat-lining after last week’s news. Heck, maybe we’ll still get to see Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson play Black Adam after all!

For those that haven’t been keeping track, the Captain Marvel/Shazam film (also referred to as “Billy Batson and the Legend of Shazam”) made a big splash at San Diego Comic-Con International last year with Johnson’s announcement that he plans to play Black Adam in the film. In November, it was announced that the project was moving from New Line Cinema to Warner Bros — appropriately enough, given its ownership of DC Comics — and co-directors Peter Segal (”Get Smart”) and Michael Ewing were attached to the film.

Just last week, however, screenwriter John August dashed many fans’ hopes when he wrote on his blog that the film “won’t be happening,” and that he didn’t think “it’s on the studio’s radar at all.”

While Uslan wouldn’t comment further on the status of the Captain Marvel/Shazam movie, his tease would seem to insinuate that there’s still a chance moviegoers will get to see Billy Batson call down a bolt of lightning down the road.
This progress (or lack theroef) on this film, as well as the effort of trying to get any solid read on it, is just maddening.

Maybe Captain Marvel will be rewritten to the be the hero of SUPERMAX or something...

:)
