Shenmue 3

I have to say I am not sure I like where this is going from a business perspective.

I mean, this game is not going to cost just 3 million obviously. Clearly there's big demand for this game, so why couldn't Sony and SEGA foot the bill?

It's one thing when a freelance game developer pitches a Kickstarter, but these are two multi-billion dollar companies.

Then again, I have never played Shenmue, but I understand how much fans love it. And if this was... let's say Skies of Arcadia I would throw my wallet at the screen.

Still, does anyone else find this a little dubious?

But going back to it recently, it really doesn't hold up. I'd even argue its a bad game in many ways. So I am hoping for something a lot more advance here. Many other series have taken the original Shenmue idea and run with it.

I would prefer it if it was better, but I'll be fine if it's roughly the same.

Shenmue III is an impossible dream come true. I'm not about to complain if it doesn't measure up to ridiculous modern standards that are too high even for games released today.

Sega left console's it's only atlus which is owned by sega that does consoles these days & there will be the minor sonic title but they won't be doing console title. besides the one's they promised to put out before they fully leave for mobile for good.

the rest where sony is concerned it while they say it's to gauge to see fan demand ( to some like you saying this as you did now ) it mean's they had fear's this won't make the money they want, if at all & they want to see how mush the demand is from and money talk's to the publishers in turn of demand which is why I said sadly the first time around.ice like i said it's a convince thing too.

it's not gonna satify you to hear other wise alot of business people that own these things like publushers house or studio's head's don't think certain games appeal any more when they do are afraid to lose money.

At least this will happen cause fan's really want this.

I doubt that Sega is even close to a multi-billion dollar company. I'm not sure if they ever were.
 
Speaking to Eurogamer's Oli Welsh last week, Sony's president of worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida provided a little more clarity on the relationship. "I cannot talk about the specifics of the deal, but I can talk about the set-up," he said. "It's the third-party relations team's work. They've been supporting many indie developers - you've seen Adam Boyes or Shahid Ahmad showcasing indie developers over the last few years. When the third party relations team identifies some great indie game being developed they strike a deal so it comes on PlayStation first on console, or something like that.

"There's a variety of ways of support, including financial support. When the game's not being funded at that point, the developer has to come up with some funding themselves, for third party relations team to help - because third party relations is third party relations - if we fund the project then it's first party! It's my job! There's a great difference. If Suzuki's Kickstarter is successful [and very quickly after our conversation it was], SCEA will add funding and other support."

Yeah, I think that breaks things down pretty well, much better than what Shu said in that Eurogamer article above.

Essentially, if one wants the "true" Shenmue 3 in the style of the older games with full open world and all that, this is going to have to hit $10 million. Anything below that will still be a continuation of said story, but will be more stripped down and probably more of a linear experience.

Still not clear what Sony's ultimate role is in all of this, though. Far as I understand, they aren't actually helping with any funding, but more so on the marketing side? I really don't get that, I feel like I'm still missing something there.

EDIT: And while I do know that Shenmue definitely has a passionate fanbase, I find it really doubtful this will hit 10 million. I think the most successful video game Kickstarter was Bloodstained, and it was just under 6 mil. Unless a few uber rich uber fans drop some real bank into this, I don't know if it's plausible at all.

Yeah I think Sony is funding it for it appearing on their stage and also marketing for it appearing on PS4. Beyond that, I'm not sure.

Anyone who wants an Xbox One version would probably need to persuade Phil Spencer to do something, if that's how it works.

And man, they really need to update their Kickstarter to destroy all this ambiguity. Fans are doing a much better job at summarising things.
 
I'm not super interested. I played Shenmue II on Xbox, but I obviously didn't know a thing going on. It seemed pretty cool, but I never quite got caught up in it really. I was always waiting for virtual or HD re-release of both of them to experience the full thing, but it obviously never happened. I also don't have a gaming PC or PS4 as of now, so no not much incentive on that part, either.
 
I think its lame that that the PS4 wont get a physical release. I hope thats changed by the time the game launches

Yu Suzuki and Ys Net have clarified concerns regarding Shenmue III‘s funding and budget.
The long anticipated sequel took to Kickstarter earlier this month with a goal of $2 million. It was later revealed that both Sony Computer Entertainment and Shibuya Productions are partners of Ys Net also helping funding.
“Sony and Shibuya Productions have been wonderful partners because they believe in Shenmue and want to see the best for the fans and the game,” Yu Suzuki said in a blog post. “Their investment in (and support of) Shenmue have helped to realize a sequel that will stand proud with its predecessors.
“While it is not business practice to discuss the specific details of such arrangements, I can say that with their assistance on the production and marketing end, and in Sony’s case with some publishing support as well, Ys Net is able to use more of the money we collect through Kickstarter purely for Shenmue III’s development. It is also important to note that your funds are going strictly to Ys Net for development of Shenmue III – Sony and Shibuya Productions are not seeing a cent of your Kickstarter dollars.”
Shenmue III is funded $3.6 million, $1.6 million over its initial $2 million goal. If $5 million is reached, Suzuki promises an “an all new gameplay feature,” and if $10 million is reached, “a much larger, completely open world.”
Shenmue III will be developed for PlayStation 4 and PC.

Mine came with a disc of the Shenmue Movie featuring the 1st game. It's hard to imagine 3 coming out w/o 1 and 2 being re-released.

I'm really hoping they put out an HD upgrade of the first two.
 
Who would release a HD remaster of the first two games? Sony? Sega? Does Sega even have anything to do with Shenmue 3?
