Sega “investigating” Shenmue I and II remasters

Published 6 hours ago. 75 comments.

The flame of hope burns bright.

Shenmue-HD-Remasters-Investigating.jpg

Sega is “currently investigating” how to make Shenmue and Shenmue II HD remasters a reality, the latest Sega Central video reveals.

Answering a fan question about whether the two remasters could ever happen, Sega community manager Dan Sheridan responded in the video: “

With regards to Shenmue I and II HD, of course we would love to release these tomorrow. Sadly, it’s not as simple as porting the games to current platforms as we will need to ensure that any HD remaster lives up to the quality of the original titles.

And with games as immersive as Shenmue I and II, there are further complications from licensed products that were included in the original games. That said, we’d love to do it and are currently investigating how to make it a reality.”

The latest entry in the series, Shenmue III, is estimated for release across PlayStation 4 and PC in December 2017.

Yu Suzuki Discusses The Pressure And Logistics Of Making Shenmue III. August 24, 2016 . 7:30pm

Shenmue series director and producer Yu Suzuki talks about making a highly anticipated game with a budget smaller than that of its predecessors.

14 comments Read >
In a recently published interview, Shenmue series director and producer Yu Suzuki discusses the pressure of making the highly anticipated and successfully crowdfunded Shenmue III.

Suzuki also talks about the possibility of a video that may summarize the events of Shenmue I and II. A refresher may be helpful, as he plans to include references to the previous games in Shenmue III that are more than just flashback scenes.

As far as character interactions are concerned, Suzuki continues by stating the game will easily include more than 100 NPCs. However, that number could grow to over 200 depending on the development team’s efficiency.

Watch the full interview (with Japanese and French audio and English subtitles) in the video below:

In case you missed it, Keiji Okayasu, who worked as a sub-director on the first two Shenmue games, is also going to work with Suzuki on Shenmue III. In a separate video message, supporters were updated on the progress made in Shenmue III’s first year of development.

Shenmue III is expected to come to PC and PlayStation 4 in December 2017.

I don't need an HD re release of 1-2. I'll take them just ported over or included with a Shenmue 3 collector's edition.

I don't need an HD re release of 1-2. I'll take them just ported over or included with a Shenmue 3 collector's edition.

In this day and age there is no reason why anything pre-2012 should be released and not be HD. It doesn't take much to put a game through an upscaler for native output of 1080p

I don't need an HD re release of 1-2. I'll take them just ported over or included with a Shenmue 3 collector's edition.
they said to not expect this to be a high rez thing in graphic's any way .

so any one that's expecting such scale in up the graphic's and will be mad later, well I'll feel , sorry but they said as much.

I'm fine just having the damn game.

The latest issue of Weekly Famitsu has a big feature where it seeks out answers to questions from developers about certain expectations for 2017. And that includes Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki on Shenmue III.
Here’s what Suzuki has to say:
“Development is entering the final stage headed towards full-scale production. Early in the new year, I think we’ll be able to show you things such as new videos.

“We will continue progressing with development so that our backers and those who experience the world of Shenmue for the first time can do so with pleasure.

“Also, at noon on December 15, we will start pre-order sales for the PC version of Shenmue III, which received a lot of requests.

Those interested in Shenmue III, please check the official website.”

The latest on the anticipated sequel.

Ys Net has released new screenshots and a development update on Shenmue III, and opened pre-orders for the PC version.
Get the information and screenshots below.
PC Version Available on Shenmue.link
There have been many requests for the PC version pre-order option during the Slacker Backer Campaign, and now that agreements by all affiliated parties have been finalized, Shenmue.link is accepting Shenmue III PC version pre-orders as of today. As always, sales from the PC version will also help towards the Stretch Goals.

Just as with the Kickstarter, backers will be able to choose whether they would like the PS4 version or the PC version. For example, if you have pledged for the PS4 version, you can still switch to the PC version, or vice versa. Backers will be able to make their choice during the backer surveys. (More on the surveys below.)

Game Development
R&D for various game elements is on course as the development team shifts its focus towards production. Main game scenarios are nearing completion, motion capture tests are well under way, and voicing tests with the cast have begun. Yu-san and the production staff are happy to say they are enjoying the work as they continue to diligently make progress on the mini-games, events, and battles.
“I have been absorbed in developing the game and I stay in the studio all night time to time,” said Yu Suzuki. “My life is all about Shenmue day and night.”

These are new, still work-in-progress visuals and are subject to change.

Backer Surveys
Currently backer surveys are currently planned for the summer of 2017. On the surveys, we will ask you for your reward preferences that pertain to the different tiers and for your shipping information if you have pledged for physical rewards. There will be further updates with more information regarding the surveys.

Shenmue remasters on the way?

Sega Europe has registered the domain name ShenmueHD.com (whois).

The domain would suggest Sega is working on an HD remaster of its Shenmue titles. Back in May 2016, Sega said it was “investigating” remasters of Shenmue and Shenmue II.

Shenmue III is currently in development for PlayStation 4 and PC at Ys Net. If you missed it, catch the latest update here.

High-definition remasters of Shenmue and Shenmue II will launch in 2017, according to “a trusted source close to Atlus USA” of blog and online retailer Rice Digital.

The website reports that both games may be released together rather than separately, and are likely being geared up to launch before Shenmue III. While it doesn’t have any further information, the website said it was told it is “safe to assume a PC / Steam release,” and that there has not been any indication that the remasters will appear on any other platform.

The author of the article previously leaked information that Atlus would publish The King of Fighters XIV a few days before its official announcement.

Back in January, Sega registered a pair of Shenmue remaster-related domains in ShenmueHD.com and ShenmueRemastered.com.
Prior to that, in May 2017, Sega said it was “investigating” working on remasters of Shenmue and Shenmue II.

The long-anticipated sequel, Shenmue III, is in development at Ys Net and currently slated for release for PlayStation 4 and PC in December.
