Due to the fact that accidental drowning is one of the top 3 causes of death in children, should shools teach swimming or is it the parent's responsibility?

Its one of the few things where i would put the onus on the school.
mainly cos if the parents cant swim (like mine cant), its unlikely they will teach the kids. im not a great swimmer, and i was never really taught

My vote is yes, unless the student has a medical problem that prevents it.

1. Parents may not know how to swim
2. Parents may teach kids bad swimming habits
3. Parents may not be able to afford private instruction
4. Too many kids are drowning
5. Public pools do not have enough safety precautions
6. It's good exercise

I would've loved that. I cannot swim at all, and I really wish I could.

I've tried now to learn, but I just can't get over the fear of being down there and not being able to get up for air in time while I'm trying to learn.

One thing though, would've been a plus and a minus at the same time...seeing your classmates in bathing suits. For some, it'd be GREATTTTT....for others....I'd rather drown.

Teasing of kids would only multiply.

if they can teach swimming in summer camp... why not in school... it's just the costs of adding pools to the schools and then annual maintainance as well as the potential lawsuits that may occur.

maybe it's better for parents to hire someone in the summer. :(

i learnt to swim at school. i haven't drowned. so therefor i go with which ever option that would make you go with.

it was done at the local leisure center.

ABSOLUTELY....
None of this...
only if you want to crap.

Throw the snotty kid in the water and let him start to tread water

Cripple or not throw them all in the water.

If you can't swim, avoid water. That's how I avoid drowning.

:( I can't swim.. Wanna throw me in the pool Malice? Funny tho, the last time I attempted to learn how, I had to be rescitated. :( I was revived by a dude.

I remember having a week or two of swimming lessons in fifth grade way back when...I don't remember if it was useful or not.

I have no problem with swimming being taught in school.

It was a regular part of my high school's Physical Education classes. We spent an entire grading period (6 weeks) in the pool every day for PE. It was a lot of fun, we learned all the basic techniques, and it was a lot better than running.

Anybody can swim you just don't know how. You don't need to be in 10 feet of water to learn to swim you could do it in a 5 foot deep pool just as easy.

that's hot

Yes, swimming should be taught in schools. Here we have yet another "lets keep kids in protective boxes their whole lives" plan.

You're children aren't getting any thinner. Swimming is a good, easy, fun and healthy activity.

If so many kids are dying in swimming accidents, maybe it's 'cause they didn't know how to swim.

Lol that's what I meant. I was in the process of learning. I was doing okay, going back and forth across the shallow end of the pool. Take the big leap to the big side after about 10 minutes of the kiddie side, sink to the bottom. It was pretty cool but I'm too scared to get back in it, so I will remain without that skill for the rest of my life.

Not all schools have the money/room for a swimming pool.

It's the parents responisibility. They don't have to know how to swim; sign the kid up for lessons at the nearest YMCA.

Yeah dude, don't you know, because of global warming someday we'll be living in cities held afloat by empty barrels. Then swimming will be essential for living.

They dont? I remember in my Kindergarten class we had swimming classes. I still dont know how to swim but I had classes.

Niether did my school. We went to the nearest swimmers.

It's simple enough for a school to organise a trip to the local swimmers.
