Should we wait to rebuild New Orleans?

Heh. Chocolate city. No, we shouldn't rebuild. Its a shell of its former self, most of the culture was either looted (material culture) or dispursed (intangible culture). My dad actually works right outside New Orleans in a city called Metarie (sp?)

I'm glad I got out when I did.

Anyway, I think it's pointless to say that because of hurricane risk, the city should never be rebuilt.

Well, because of earthquake risk, San Francisco should never have been rebuilt. Because of volcano risk, Hawaii should never have been populated. Same with the whole midwest and tornadoes.

We live on a volatile, dangerous planet. No matter where you live there is risk for natural disaster. To not rebuild a city because of natural disaster risk is absolutely asinine.

You know over the next 8 years New Orleans is going to get hit another two or three times by Katrina style hurricanes. They just got hit, and they already want to rebuild the city right in the path of the next few hurricanes. Many weather experts are predicting that New Orleans will get hit again this year in fact by another hurricane of equal or greater strenth than Katrina. They predict it will get hit by several over the next 8 years.

Am I the only one who thinks rebuilding New Orleans so early sort of defeats the purpose?

New Orleans should have been atleast half way rebuilt by now.But the US Government wants to see the black population suffer,so little to no help has been done.So people have done things themselfs.Too little, too late.

I would expect another hurricant to finish the job,so much so that nothing might be left.Dont let the "We shall rebuild" statement fool you.The USA is overcroweded,so the people have no where to go.Even if they wanted to go.Im not saying it was dumb to make a city there in the first place, its just that it should have been fixed already.

So, 5+ years after Katrina, what is New Orleans like now?

They've made a museum exhibit out the disaster:

New Orleans online said:
When it hit southeastern Louisiana and the Mississippi Gulf Coast on the morning of August 29, 2005, the storm caused fearsome destruction. But the disaster wasn't entirely the result of natural causes. Levees and floodwalls – the man-made barriers built to protect New Orleans from the water surrounding it – failed. Their collapse in a dozen or more locations, plus tidal surges from the the low-lying eastern edge of New Orleans, flooded 80 percent of the city. By the time the waters receded and the survivors regrouped, Katrina, and then Hurricane Rita, had claimed more than 1,400 lives and caused billions of dollars worth of property destruction.

Now, are there any facts or figures on how many people came back, how much has been rebuilt and whether or not the Levees have been rebuilt to withstand another similar event?

also...New Orleans has lost about 30 percent of its population in the years following the Hurricane

I say if it gets annihilated by something similar to Katrina, we just let it go

This. Re-electing Mr New Orleans is a chocolate city just goes to show what idiots live there.

Should have had flood insurance, then this wouldn't even be a question

The only colour that's been relevant in your Government's handling of Katrina/NO is green...

Contrary to what a lot of the media are/were saying, New Orleans and its surrounding towns/parishes wasn't entirely populated by black people... It was however, densely populated with the lower and lower-middle class.

It never should have been allowed to happen in the first place, but since it has there's been too much inertia to justify rebuilding before the completion of this hurricane cycle. If it were to be rebuilt, then funding and plans should have been made almost immediately to re-build higher levees and lay down proposed core infrastructure to minimise the cultural damage. But since nothing was done at all in the wake, it doesn't make sense until the cycle's conclusion.

Just have to accept that when they DO re-build, less people will be willing to return with every year that passes.
