Sequel to 'Superman Returns' due in 2009

By Michael Tsai
Advertiser Staff Writer
The sequel to "Superman Returns," which grossed nearly $200 million in the U.S. this year, will likely hit theaters in 2009, University of Hawai'i Academy for Creative Media director Chris Lee confirmed today.

Lee, who will return as executive producer of the film, hosted "Superman Returns" director Bryan Singer and producer Jon Peters at a wide-ranging discussion with ACM students today at UH.

Singer and Peters are in Honolulu this week to celebrate Lee's birthday, and to begin planning the next Superman film, which will likely begin production mid- to late next year in a location yet to be determined. "Superman Returns" was shot in Sydney, Australia, with four ACM students serving as interns.

Singer acknowledged that he has also been approached to direct the next "X-Men" movie — he directed the first two well-received films before turning over the reigns for the third installment to Brett Ratner —
but said he wouldn't have time to take on another large-scale project before the next Superman gets underway. He is interested, however, in seeing the script for the "X-Men" spinoff "Wolverine."

While Lee said that planning for the next Superman film is just getting underway, he did say that he would once again look at using Hawai'i-based businesses for some of the post-production.

Interesting......

EDIT. And in the wrong forum....whoops.

I think Singer doing X-Men 4 would be the only way I'd want one.

Not because nobody else could do it. But because since this is the world that he created, and he had his own ideas for X-Men 3, I do believe that he'd be the one best able to continue the franchise after the closure that was brought in X-Men: The Last Stand, as I honestly feel it's going to be very hard to continue the franchise beyond the 3rd movie. Too much closure was met. Continuation would either be cheesy (bringing back "dead" characters, again, as well as cured characters), or just not the same (a continuation without Cyclops, Jean, possibly Xavier, possible recasts or exclusion of Wolverine and Storm)

^Singer didn't create the world, he just brought it to life for two movies.

But that's what I mean.

He established the film world. He established the direction these movies were taking.

Obviously, it was Stan Lee who created the world. But Singer created the film versions of it.

I hope this is true and that Singer will re-consider doing an x4!

Bring on Emma Frost! lol ..

If X-Men 4 happens, the only way I would be open to it is is Singer comes back to it and that the studios WAITS until he is available. No more of this pushing it around to other people bulls**t!

He can bring on the new X-Men and give Jean/The Phoenix the treatments she deserved!

I sincerely hope that if there's an X4, Jean stays dead. She's had her moment.

No she hasnt. And anyway Wolverine had his moment in X-2 and X-3 but he gets his own bloody spin off and will most likely be in X-4

It kinda defeats the purpose of killing Jean every movie if you're just going to bring her back again.

Though I love Jean, if Singer comes back for X-4, I'd want Jean to have her break or else her death will be as meaningless as her deaths in the comics now.

yeah same here. as much as i do like her, bringing her back a second time (especially with the events of x3) would just not work and would severely hurt the movie. They only plausible characters to comeback would have to be professor x(still scratching my head as to why ratner brings him back) and of course cyclops

Yeah exactly thats why x3 doesn't really make too much sense..at least the way Ratner made it. He brings Jean back as this completely different character..someone automatically homicidal who always had the potential and I think that kinda makes her death in x2 pointless since shes comes back killing everyone anyways. If it was done the way Singer intended, then it would've made so much more sense.

It would be great if Singer came back for an X4.

If they make one, I hope it will be a "next generation" kind of thing: mostly new characters, next to the already established ones of Bobby, Rogue, Kitty and Colossus. Maybe Halle and Hugh and Kelsey could have cameo's. And of course, a new villain!

If they are looking to continue the storyline as it is, they have to work damn hard to make it work, the story was pretty much concluded in X3.
I agree very much that it won't make much sense to bring back all the dead and cured characters, it would lessen the impact of X3.

Yeah how's Jean going to come back after killing so many people in X3? In fact Wolverine shouldn't also be returning since he might be prosecuted for killing the Phoenix....now, here's wondering why isn't he arrested after X2 for killing Stryker Deathstrike & co. and what Prof X will say after seeing all the dead bodies of soldiers in his mansion.

I would LOVE Singer to come back for X4, it is the only way i would be interested in it. But i doubt even he could repair the damage of X3.

first thing- fox are scouting an X4- yay. shows they are really interested
secondly- singer can't do it even if he wanted to he's booked until 2009 with SR2 and these actors aren't getting younger and there is no guarantee they would do it in 2010. so fox is right to strike while the iron is hot. however this is no excuse to bring in poor quality- fox should take their time- poach Joss Whedon from Wonder woman and get started. if they can't do that then try some quality directors- and even if they do give notes on what they want- say FIX ROGUE.
lastly- comic book movies already has their X4 page up so im assuming they see it as inevitable. any chance the hype could tentatively put up one

and on another note i heard back in jan singer was writing some ultimate x men stuff- what happened to that?

Oh God, this is just too good to ever be true. I would get on my knees and pray 10 our fathers if he came back :( But it does seem unlikely. Anyway, if I had to wait until after Superman 2, I would do it happily.

I honestly don't think a x4 would be a good idea, or do I want one, at least not a direct sequel, maybe a younger generation one, but even that would be pushing it (really that would work better as a spin of oppose to it being a sequal)
anyway, I question, if Singer could fellow the events of x3 without under minding it, or tiring to back track, and messing the storyline all up. he would probably just make the movie he wants an ignore the events of x3, which would just make no since. (I know, you guys are just gonna say something like 3x is already messed up, cause you personally didn't like it, and you just want a 4th the undo what you didn't like, but, that’s just not the way it works. x3 ended the series. (they finished the storyline, let some spin offs play out, see how they do, before we start talking about any type future movies) IMO

leave it as a trilogy

(yes, I am parentally one of the few around here, who thought, the movie was fine the way it was) I’ll admit, it had its problems (mostly do to production, the studio, and time restraints…) like any movie (but, really it had no more plot holes, problems, and inconsistency, then the first two had) I liked all 3, and I think they all work fine together.
Just saying

I would like to see Singer do X4. I have nothing against Brett Ratner, with such a plot he did his best and I do like the third film, but I think bryan was just better at introducing new characters and the pace he set with the first two films was good.
I think because xmen as a whole is so popular they could carry on the films as long as they wanted. And im all for it.

Thanks Pickle-El for the news

It really intrigues me what he might've done with Beast... more majesty, I guess, than Kelsey Grammer gave to him.

But he was very loyal to the Superman movies from before with SR... why he'd do the same with X3? (btw, you don't have to put the lettering in size 1 to say that you did like the movie :p )

Exactly.

I would prefer that they wait even after the Returns sequel ( no offense to Ratner , X3 was a fun movie )

think about doing a reboot Bryan , negociate THE contract where at last you'll do completely Xmen youre way :)
