The Avengers Skarsgard's Thoughts on The Avengers

Sounds more like he wasnt satisfied with his part more than the film, but his comments are interesting non-the-less.

Every actor wants something interesting to do. He's probably just in some scenes for exposition and science-techno-babble.

we all knew his part would be small at best. he probably knew that too, before reading the script. of course he wants more to, I'd be surprised if he didn't want a bigger role. every actor wants more to do...

You know, I do like Stellan Skarsgard's acting and I can understand he may have some disappointments with the amount of his involvement in this movie. But the real fact of the matter is that this movie is crammed full of characters. Not everyone will be getting a lot of screentime considering the focus should mostly be placed upon the more important characters, like Thor, Cap, Ironman and Hulk as well as Loki. In an ensemble movie, as a writer, you would love to give everybody screentime, but you have to remember what characters are more integral to moving the plot along and when they should be on the screen.

Skarsgard wasn't being realistic if he expected his character to play a large part in the movie. When an actor gets something like tenth billing in an ensemble cast he can't expect to be a major player. Of all the characters on the canvas, his was the most minor, one that played a supporting role in another film and was never in the comics. Selvig was there to move the plot, nothing more.

TBH, I think Skarsgard readily admits that in the article.

I'm more concerned with comments from Jeremy Renner and ScarJo about feeling like nameless faces in the crowd in this "ensemble." *Their* comments are more legitimate, since it would be a sad waste of character and talent if Renner and Johansen as Hawkeye and Black Widow are relegated to mere background with just a coupla lines in the film.

Granted, in a superhero fight against an alien/extradimensional invasion, The Big Four (Thor, Hulk, Cap and IM) are going to be your big guns, and they're going to be the focus of the film. But if you're bothering to include Widow and Hawkeye at all, then you should give them something meaningful to do. In particular, I'd like to see Widow get the chance to do some crucial spycraft that helps defeat the invasion, and Hawkeye get at least one critical money shot that takes out an otherwise undefeatable foe.

I thought the most intriguing (and somewhat worrying quotes were)

here's a lot of people in 'The Avengers' And I was thinking, How on Earth are you going to get all of those superheroes in a movie and have room for them and still have a story that actually moves forward? And, also you have to satisfy a lot of actors with at least reasonable material.

and

, it's a fantastic; pure mechanical work to build a story with so many heroes that actually works. I think the script worked. What it will be when it comes out, I can't tell.

I think Whedon is going to pull off ah a hat trick in filmmaking, because it seems the actors just see a jumbled mess for their part. Very interesting.

How do you figure that? Skarsgard says straight out in the article (& the bit you quoted) that he thought the script works. In fact, I don't think I've heard anything but praise for the script.

This thread is pure ****-stirring. Best to leave it at that.

Agreed.

I'd have prefered him not being in the movie all together if he was going to be complaining about his role in the film. Let's be honest, he's an insignifican't character any way you cut it, in his original movie Thor. What made him think they were going to expand his role in The Avengers?

You don't hear Clark Gregg whining, no matter how big or little his role in a given movie is going to be. Or Cobie Smulders, for that matter. Every actor wants to be the star of the show but unless they have top billing it isn't going to happen. In a movie like this, if your name isn't in the top five your role is minor. *****ing about that is a bit unprofessional.

The reason these actors aren't sure of the final product is because its such a huge project. This is a big film with many characters and scenes and sets. Alot goes into film making. And actors are only a small part of the entire production. If you want to know about the whole project, ask the director

You guys might be overreacting. Who said he was complaining? I don't see any indication of that. What Mickey Rourke was doing about Iron Man 2 is complaining. Stellan is only acknowledging his small role in the film.

You know, I just thought of this, but ensemble movies are such a huge endeavor to undertake. And for the most part actors/actresses can have sizable egos that demand that they need more screen time. Maybe this is why a few people, like ScarJo, feel the way they do about their screen time in this movie. But yet again I have to play Devil's Advocate and remind everyone that with a cast this big you do have to focus on the characters that are more integral to the movement of the plot. Realistically from a writer's point of view you are not going to push aside importnat plot driven scenes of Loki causing chaos to give Black Widow more screentime when she's really not as important to the flow of the narrative as Loki in terms of the plot. That's the one thing some actors/actresses don't take into consideration because they can't see things through the eyes of the one writing the script because they're only giving life to the words a writer puts down. In terms of the Hollywood machine I think writers are the most under appreciated people when it comes to certain acting talents.

Having a great script that works... and filming that great script and turning it into a great film are different things.

Sorry to go off-topic but I think Stellan would be prefect for Dr. Octopus.

Way back when they were developing Spider-man 2 and it was in preproduction Stellan Skarsgard's name popped up quite a few times as a rumor for Doc Ock casting choices.

I wonder if Stellan got the impression he'd be a bigger part of the movie before he'd agreed to do it. When he found he wasn't given as much material as he thought he'd get, he was disappointed. Possibly he'd turned down a juicy part on another film or something he'd wanted to do to be able to do The Avengers and that's getting him a bit upset?

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I'd just want to be a part of this movie, even if it was me screaming my fool head off while running past the camera as Loki's conjuring up little Gremlins to terrorize the city.
