Eh. I can be harsher. The explanation just sounded plausible to me because I have noticed these changes as the seasons progressed and that even now that he's in Metropolis working at the Daily Planet he still does not wear the glasses. He's worn it twice in the entire series so I really would not be surprised if it was the truth and this super model just did not want to look "nerdy".
But that's just it; it doesn't sound plausible. In fact, it's ludicrous.
1. The cast was signed for five years. "Whisper" was a third season episode. I do not find it "plausible" that Welling renegotiated his contract in the third year (when he was locked in for two more years regardless) on the basis of the ratings for one episode.
2. Welling
directed the only other episode where Clark wore glasses. If the actor had such a pet peeve about his image, he wouldn't have worn the glasses in an episode he had full control over. Moreover, Apocalypse garnered exceptional ratings.
3. Welling got out of modeling because he claimed he wasn't very good at it. He doesn't do endorsements or use his likeness/image to sell products, unlike Ashton Kutcher and other male models he used to work with. So the use of prop glasses on SV isn't going to change a career he abandoned almost a decade ago. I'd find it much more plausible to believe that it's the
network that pushes for a certain image for casts on their shows so they can better market those shows to their target audience: young women.
4. Welling was cast to play Clark Kent not Superman and makes it a point to clarify the distinction. SV's Clark Kent doesn't have an alter ego yet, so there really hasn't been much need for him to wear glasses. When SV's Clark Kent starts parading around in the Superman costume (don't hold your breath) but doesn't wear glasses when he's Clark Kent, then people will have a legitimate argument.
5. We know Welling has a clause in his contract that says he will not wear the Superman costume on SV. What we don't know is who put it there. Did it ever occur to anybody that the stipulation is per Warner Bros, not the actor? Ahem.
My view would change on that if the guy was any good at it. I like the show and all but I can't deny that the man is upstaged by every single other actor on the show that he is headlining.
Your view of his acting is an opinion that I will not argue with, but others might. He's been voted "best actor" by fans on K-site's yearly SV awards consistently since S4, I believe.
