Smallville gets Zatanna

It was Welling that decided against glasses. We could have glasses all the way back to season 3 but nope Welling said "No"

He couldn't wait to talk of the glasses last season in "Apocalypse"

Apparenty they bother him. Glasses aren't considered attractive and make him appear 'nerdy'

Supporting that ratings decreased in the third season episode Whisper when he put them on. Giving him the clout to renegotiate his contract so that he could approve what he wore - since he was and still is a model.

...Welling is an ass. There's a reason the character is the way he is. He's not supposed to be playing himself with superpowers...Another notch for professional actors over models turn actors.

His renegotiated contract had a clause that he had final approval over what clothing Clark wears and that he wouldn't have to wear the suit. Evidence of this is supported in the third season where he was supposed to have the glasses permanently but Tom petitioned for a return to the status quo and that's another reason why he's not in as much flannel/plaid prints in later episodes.
My WORD, that's a lot of rumor for just one post. Why spread this stuff around if there's absolutely no proof to back any of it up other than what some anonymous person says on an internet message board?

Welling is an "ass" because of some rumor you just read with no back up or proof? You have no idea if any of that drivel is true. Have you met the man? Read any of the published articles or interviews with or about him? Day-um! C'mon people.

I argee with AgentPat Where's the proof that TW didn't wanna wear the glasses?

Thats the most ludicrous thing i've ever heard, and calling someone you don't know an ass based on some ridiculous rumor is harsh

bah, in the long run, i think the magic glasses make more sense

i can't imagine a smallville with a nerdy looking clark. The idea of the nerd angle coming in together with his superman angle plays pretty well with superman the movie.

Oh, c'mon.. it's totally negative and bashes Welling, therefore it MUST be true. :whatever:

Are people ever going to let go of the former "model" thing like it's some kind of crime? You know it's a very common starting gig in the industry for a lot of professional actors, right? It's almost like people are... jealous, or something.

Eh. I can be harsher. The explanation just sounded plausible to me because I have noticed these changes as the seasons progressed and that even now that he's in Metropolis working at the Daily Planet he still does not wear the glasses. He's worn it twice in the entire series so I really would not be surprised if it was the truth and this super model just did not want to look "nerdy".

My view would change on that if the guy was any good at it. I like the show and all but I can't deny that the man is upstaged by every single other actor on the show that he is headlining.

But that's just it; it doesn't sound plausible. In fact, it's ludicrous.

1. The cast was signed for five years. "Whisper" was a third season episode. I do not find it "plausible" that Welling renegotiated his contract in the third year (when he was locked in for two more years regardless) on the basis of the ratings for one episode.

2. Welling directed the only other episode where Clark wore glasses. If the actor had such a pet peeve about his image, he wouldn't have worn the glasses in an episode he had full control over. Moreover, Apocalypse garnered exceptional ratings.

3. Welling got out of modeling because he claimed he wasn't very good at it. He doesn't do endorsements or use his likeness/image to sell products, unlike Ashton Kutcher and other male models he used to work with. So the use of prop glasses on SV isn't going to change a career he abandoned almost a decade ago. I'd find it much more plausible to believe that it's the network that pushes for a certain image for casts on their shows so they can better market those shows to their target audience: young women.

4. Welling was cast to play Clark Kent not Superman and makes it a point to clarify the distinction. SV's Clark Kent doesn't have an alter ego yet, so there really hasn't been much need for him to wear glasses. When SV's Clark Kent starts parading around in the Superman costume (don't hold your breath) but doesn't wear glasses when he's Clark Kent, then people will have a legitimate argument.

5. We know Welling has a clause in his contract that says he will not wear the Superman costume on SV. What we don't know is who put it there. Did it ever occur to anybody that the stipulation is per Warner Bros, not the actor? Ahem.

My view would change on that if the guy was any good at it. I like the show and all but I can't deny that the man is upstaged by every single other actor on the show that he is headlining.
Your view of his acting is an opinion that I will not argue with, but others might. He's been voted "best actor" by fans on K-site's yearly SV awards consistently since S4, I believe.

Really now? I find that hard to take any stock in with actors like John Glover and Allison Mack on the show but hey, their opinion.

And I'll admit I don't know much about Welling as you guys. I just watch the show like any average joe and pop in here every now and then so the info you posted is news to me. It just sounded to me like a pretty boy saying "Ugh. But don't nerds wear glasses? Flannel is so lumberjack. I'm not wearing that." If I'm wrong about the guy then so be it and I apologize for calling him an ass.

I thought this thread was about Zatanna?

Anywhoo....

Do we know that?

I thought it was a myth, didn't either Al or Miles say it wasn't in his contract?

If you won't fully credit other fan's opinions, maybe you should maybe take James Marsters word on it.

Here's what he said about Tom in the Season 5 commentary on Splinter:

James Marsters said:
I was watching that scene where he had Lana up against the wall and he was choking her out and I just thought that that was such good acting man, so specific moment to moment and just letting you in on what his problem , his brain process is and how the paranoid brain process was working and it was so clear. Tom's GOOD! And you know he’s playing and you know he admits this, he’s playing a character who is not intellectually based, he says “ I am based in the heart”, well not *I* am, not Tom but Clark and it would be so easy to bland that out and erm not… but he approaches it, a character that’s not intellectual, in an intellectual way.

I think you should take a closer look. I admit I'm biased, but I am the KryptonSite reviewer for the show and I find something nice to say about Tom's acting every single episode without really trying.

I completely agree with James: Tom's GOOD.

Tom's by all accounts a very nice guy and he has a lot of respect for the fandom and for the character... He also is an extremely smart man, by more than one account.

Again, said by James Marsters:

James Marsters said:
I'm ashamed to admit this, but Tom is a lot more intelligent than I was prepared for. It was the same prejudice with people that are that good-looking, which is I have to be smarter than them. It was wonderful to find Tom is smart, well-read and funny. We've had wonderful conversations about acting, politics, and religion. We seem to be cut from the same attitude with regards to celebrity, which is, 'Let's not let that in today. Let's get our shots and go home.'

And I'll admit I don't know much about Welling as you guys. I just watch the show like any average joe and pop in here every now and then so the info you posted is news to me. It just sounded to me like a pretty boy saying "Ugh. But don't nerds wear glasses? [/B

I wear glasses and I'm not a nerd. :word:

]Flannel is so lumberjack. I'm not wearing that." If I'm wrong about the guy then so be it and I apologize for calling him an ass.

On Clark's first day working at the Daily Planet, he wore a plaid flannel shirt to work, so on that basis alone, I dont think that initial "opinion" holds any weight.

I'm not even saying anything about Savage, but i do remember Al or Miles (they were sitting together) saying that it was in Tom's contract that he not wear the suit

Yeah, I wear glasses too and wasn't that the same ep that Lois got him the suit? Maybe the flannel was just to prove a point of how ugly he thinks it is. :oldrazz: Ah well. Moving on.

I thought they were joking...

I'd love to see the reference.

I am hoping she is saving GA, not tying him up, she shouldn't be a villian.

http://www.kryptonsite.com/ Episode #8-17: "Hex":

"- Cassie tries to get Oliver to believe in witchcraft, and comes to him for help. Apparently Lex had obtained an item before he disappeared that she would like to obtain. She offers to give Oliver his "deepest desire" if he helps her."

Maybe Oliver doesn't help her to find this "item" so she gotta tie him up and use magic to get questions?? so not really a villian, just a woman trying to get answers?? Cause the way she's walking away from him, she doesn't look like she's saving him. Unless she's walking towards the bad guy and is about to vs that said bad guy?? Not sure yet, not much to go on yet from what we know, time will tell... :)

Put that crap into the spoiler thread!
