for those who have read it, is it any good? or is it a waste of time?

Well, one thing's for sure, get ready to read one lllloooooooonnnnnnggggg book.

I am so grateful that I never had to read Lord of the Rings when I was in school. It's one of my favorite books and one of several that I read annually. However, if I had to read it when I was a student I would have ended up hating it.

yea its a long book, get ready to read a lot

Watch the movies as you read the books. Preferably the extended editions. The visual medium will help you remeber many of the key plot points. Book then movie and so on.

Man I wish I had that project when I was in school. I've read those books so many times as a kid it was crazy. Every summer I went through the series again.

Great series if you like fantasy you'll enjoy. Also one of the best novels adapted for film IMO.

That is a terrible idea. While the movies are fantastic, they change a lot. Imagine he's assigned to summarize the two towers?

"And then the Elves showed up to help Rohan at Helm's Deep."

Automatic F.

That's why I said read the books first. He can easily ignore the inconsistencies.

It's a long ass book to read for a class!

Yeah, the more you go back to those movies the more wrong you realize they get. Vast inconsistency in characters (some people not being in the movies, some people getting other people's lines), people showing up where they never were, things out of sequence, things just plain not happening.

The first time I saw them I was too excited to notice but in retrospect t here's a whole lot that went wrong. Heck, the whole second half of Return Of The King was pretty different, especially in the Shire and the fates of Saruman and Wyrmtongue.

Is it all 3 or Just fellowship? I can't imagine making students actually read the WHOLE thing...

I hate Lord of the Rings books. Tolkein's writing style is just infuriating. Its like reading a history book. The man is a talented writer, but he is just so incredibly dry that I find it impossible to read.

I read the hobbit and fellowship, but I didn't finish the series because it was as Matt says too dry.

I read the Lord of the Rings trilogy last year and loved them. Now I have to readThe Odyssey over the weekend. It's good, but a weekend to finish it? Ugh...
