I'm about to read Twilight for the sake of my girlfriend and my best friend. Except for the movie, which looked wholly uninteresting to me, I know absolutely nothing about this series of books. I've heard several arguments both ways, mostly down gender lines, as to the awesomeness or suckiness of this book. So, is it worth reading, or a total waste of time?

im told, in sunlight, the vampires glitter. glitter vampires, man.

its not that terrible.

i've only read the first one, and i've seen the movie. her mythos of the vampires, and werewolves is pretty interesting

the story centers around edward and bella obviously, but from the book i actually liked some of the characters more than them. they get a lot more development than they do on screen

Hmm...well, I'd never, ever think my boyfriend would enjoy the books, personally. They're less vampire more stereotypical romance most of the time. Highly addictive stuff that makes me mad at myself for reading it afterwards :o

I hope your g/f and best friend appreciate this sacrifice :(

I'm a little crazy about my girlfriend, so I figured I could read a book for her, even though its 500 pages and I still have a couple Vonnegut books I haven't' read yet.

You're a better man than me haha

Interestingly enough, I was in the middle of Also Sprach Zarathustra before I bought Twilight today. The transition between the two books should be....interesting.

its a quick read. it's definitely directed at a teen girl genre, and if i was 14 i'd probably be gushing about it like all the girls i coach in little league  one of them is the reason i read it in the first place

but, yeah like pickles said, it's old fashioned romance-like which i didn't really mind. it's nice to see more than the 'you're hot' 'so are you' 'ok let's screw' type romances.

and secretly i bet i know a couple of chicks who wish they had boys to say the things to them that edward does [/romantic]

So did you trade? She's going to put down the twighlight and read up on some zoroasterism?:woot:
Thats love right there

Totally. We can talk about runway chase scenes......all 70 of them :D

Satan's about to come out of his hole. S**t's about to get good

I read the first book in high school, not knowing what it actually was. It wasn't horrible, but it was mediocre at best IMO. Certainly nothing that stuck in my memory.

If only. I don't think Nietzsche is up her alley. I should make her read some Lovecraft though. "If I'm gonna read about your lovey dovey vampires, you're gonna read about some Cthuhlu and Yog-Sothoth" :hehe:

Cthuhlu is a bigger pimp than Edward anyday.

I've never read any of the Twilight books or seen the movie but I love this franchise because of what it's doing for pale people. It's actually cool to be disturbingly white now. :oldrazz:

Try Lauell K Hamilton. Way better than twilight. My boss was reading the series and gave me a few snippets of the plot and I was able to extrapolate with a 99% accuracy of what would happen before she even got to the last few books. the Twilight series is very shallow with its plot and feels like the author just copied previous stories, much like Eragon.

Just so you know, the first 300 pages will feel like a teen lifetime movie, but once she meets the rest of the vampire family, it gets real interesting. I haven't read the other 3 yet.

My gf read all 4 books in about 2 or 3 weeks (just finishing up the 4th now).
After reading the first she dragged me to the movie.
It wasn't THAT bad, I just felt that the changing of the vampire mythos seemed more convenient for easy story telling than an interesting alternative take on the legend.

..and ComicChick, my gf straight up told me she wished guys would say things and be as romantic as Edward is. I told her I could threaten to brutally kill her at any time if she thought it would help in our romance dept, but she didn't think it would really work.
