Comics So I think 2007 is going to be a good year for Spider-Man

1)As some of you know, I have momentarily abandoned Marvel comic books. As I mostly only read X-men and Spider-Man, I have felt less inclined to read Marvel books in general, with the recent lack of quality writing on Spider-Man's main title (Amazing Spider-Man). However, with February or so of next year, things are shaping up for the wall crawler. Civil War will be done, he'll be out of the Iron Spidey suit, and he'll be back in one of his two classic costumes. That has all of the makings for a grand return to a characterization that doesn't piss me off.

2)No matter how angry Marvel Comics makes me, Marvel Entertainment has yet to disappoint me as a whole. I was able to play Marvel Ultimate Alliance, and even though it is a clone of X-men Legends, I find that the little nuances and the addition of the web head himself, make it an enjoyable title. Also adding to the grandness, is the release of Spider-Man 3. With no real competition, that movie is sure to destroy all box office expectations, over and over again...easily topping the previous two Spidey films. The only thing i am looking foward to more, is The Dark Knight, but that isn't for another two years.

All in all, Spidey is quickly shaping up. This will sound slightly hypocritical, but I have the feeling that Joe Quesada has an ace up his sleeve. The guy has to know he is royally f***ing up with Spidey right now. So i'm sure that whatever pulls Spidey back into the black duds, is going to be something that will return the character, to a position that we can all agree on. And that is what I am truly excited for right now. Too bad for Joe Q and company, that i have no concern about what goes down in the mean time.

I have a lot of hope for 07, because of the Campbell/Loeb series. Cant wait for that. I think there is a Spidey movie coming out soon too. Thats the rumor I've heard.

Compared to the last two years, Spider-Man can only go up.

I'm excited to see Loeb writing for Marvel, but then I am disappointed because his Spider-Man book isn't even canon. It just seems like a waste of talent to me.

When did they say his new story wouldn't be canon? The only thing I know about it other than being released in 07 is the fact that Jeff Campbell is drawing it. (Something I'm really excited for, BTW.)

Er say what?
You have abandoned Marvel yet you read Spidey and X-men.
Err.. that don make much sense.

Is MUA an MMORPG, or is that game still to come?

Myself I'm not really a massive fan of the Spider-man movies.
Batman Begins was way better.
I just wish they could get stuff right that I care about.
The first film I thought was pretty decent (this was once I got over how it has f-all to do w/ continuity) except GG's costume was crap beyond all belief. Power Ranger Gobby no thanx.
Plus SM got his ass kicked way too much in the end fight that bothered me too.
SM2 I just thought sucked tho.
The only good bit was the train fight the rest was like chick flick, urgh.
After seeing how they have not bothered to look at a comic and see what the black costume actualy looks like I can't say I am particularly pumped about SM3.

It's a real shame for me since Spider-man is my fav comicbook character.
I'm just looking forward to when Rami/Maguire/Dunst leave the series.

Incredible Hulk is the Marvel film I am really excited about.

Personally I am not looking forward to MJ being killed off which is what all the signs point towards being the catalyst that returns SM to the black suit.
Joe Q is too much of a ****** to have anything good up his sleeve where SM is concerned.
He has proved this for the last three years.

There is of course Loeb/JSC tho, that’s what I hope will be good.

Sensational is great too, hope that stays good.

Oh god yes. I have high hopes for Loeb writing Spidey next year. I love Spider-Man Blue, and his work on Batman is spectacular.

Don't let us down Jeph.

LOL!

He's also doing pretty good writing the television series Heroes.

Few things I'm hoping that will happen after all of this Joey Q mess.

1. Peter and MJ, still happily married. (Joey Q: "90% of our staff thinks the marriage was a mistake.") No *%$# crap fatboy, no one is going to disagree with you because you are the boss...oh and 90% of the fans think you sould be fired and Peter and MJ stay together with better writing. Ya know the fans...YOUR PAYCHECK? ddduuuhhhhh!

2. Iron Man and Spidey hate eachother..good stories for that.

3. Spidey in Black and in the Red and Blues

4. Jeph Loeb and JSC...nuff said.

You kind of lost me on this one here. So...his characterization is bad (Note: I still don't see anything wrong with Spider-Man's characterization) because of Civil War and his Iron Spidey costume?

Because in Feb. despite Civil War being over and him being in "the black costume" (Just in time for SM3, huh?) the writing teams on all the main titles are still going to be there. JMS will still be writing Amazing Spider-Man. Sacasa will still be writing Sensational (which I hope is for a LONG time). And David will still be on FNSM.

I know you are trying to be optimistic for the next year, which I'm glad you are trying to be, but just because Civil War is over and he gets his black costume doesn't mean things may be written the way you like it to be.

why will spidey be back in black?

Nobody knows for sure. The popular opinion, that I've seen, is that MJ dies. Though I doubt MJ will die because MJ HATES the black costume and honoring your dead wife with a costume she hates seems kind of useless.

The second popular opinion is that there will be a mass mindwipe in the Marvel Universe, sort of like a Marvel Universe-Crisis, and MJ will magically forget Peter is Spider-Man, thus no marriage, and a depressed Peter Parker putting on his black duds again.

Another thing I saw thrown around on here was that it was going to be Ben Reilly, the clone of Peter Parker.

Either way, to me, it's just a nice little Spider-Man 3 nudge. We'll be getting a lot of Sandman and Venom in the coming months as well. Be prepared!

Starting with a Sandman arc in FNSM in February! :spidey:

1)"Read" and "read" are both spelled the exact same way, but one is present tense and the other is past tense. I was using the word in the past tense.

2)Marvel Ultimate Alliance is literally a clone of the X-Men Legends engine, but with other Marvel characters. Same battle system, menu setup, experince system etc etc. The entire game is based around taking a prevously successful game engine, and using it with other characters. Sort of like the use of the Unreal or Doom engine, except in this case, both X-Men Legends II and Marvel Ultimate Alliance, are games using an engine developed by Raven, who develops both games. And for the record, in case you haven't played X-Men Legends, they are Action RPG's.

3)I never liked the Hulk Character or the film that much. I did dig the old Bill Bixby/Lou Ferigno show however. As for the Spidey films, I have a vast understanding, that comic films, will rarely follow the source amterial to the letter. When you get past that, you tend to enjoy comic movies far more. Batman Begins is easily the best and most adherent to source material...but even that has errors.

4)I don't think Joe Q will kill her off. He admitted that to do the such, would be the worst mistake...even more so than his idea that a married Spidey, is a bad thing. Believe me, my avatar should convey how much I appreciate the Spidey/MJ dynamic.

5)I believe Spidey's mischaracterization has been the direct result of Civil War. Someody already had a thread, where they posted several scans from various comics throughout the years, in which Spider-Man viciously defended his identity, even when other public heroes denounced it as unnecessary. It was a very personal matter to Peter Parker. You know how they say you should never talk about Religion and Politics? Well with Spidey, his secret I.D. used to be on that same list, yet some how, Marvel pissed away all of that. As for Sensataional Spider-Man, I could give less than a s***. I only read Amazing (when I do actually read Spider-Man) or Spectacular. As for JMS...he is pretty hit or miss. He's Marvel's personal Frank Miller. He'll either tell you a really amazing story, or a really bad one. I'll forgive him for Sins Past, since Joe Q admitted to changing the story (JMS originally had them as Peter's children, and no lame ass Green Goblin tie in). But for the most part, JMS has entertained me...but Civil War was pretty much the final straw for my Spidey reading at the moment. I haven't picked up a Marvel book since Civil War #2 and Amazing Spider-Man #533.

2007? I think, because - as SIAT said - the creative teams will be the same, the comics will be more or less the same. SSM will still be damn good, FNSM will still be...acceptable, and I'll still not be a big fan of ASM - although, I will admit, it will probably be better simply because it'll feature a Spider-Man story again instead of a Civil War story like it's been for the past few months.

Let's see...

Sins Past -Story altered by Editor in Chief
The Other - Forced, multibook collaborative effort
Civil War - Forcing large scale events, to spill into a regular monthly

Spidey has been bad, because outside circumstances are coming to a draw. I already explained the situatoin before. Not reading that reasoning, is your own choice. But needless to say, by February 2007, Civil War ends, and the opportunity for the status quo to return, will straigthen things out. Besides, Joe Q already made claims about all of these events, "fixing" Marvel. At least that is what I am told. So if Civil War leads back to a repaired Spidey, then i'm all for it. If not, then i'm quite comfortable with my all DC pull list at the moment.

If you do ever go back to buying Marvel, you better start buying Daredevil. If you don't, I'll hunt you down and...give you some free sample issues.

Dude, that is a pretty weird statement from a SM fan boy,- why only read the worst title?

Do you not read FNSM either??
That is a fun read right now w/ the original Mysterio having shown up and squared
off against his two successors, sort of.
Sensational is the best SM book, and the writer Sarcasa definitely seems to understand PP/SM's viewpoint more than JMS.
Go pick up the back issues from #23 when the new team came on, its on #31 now and it rules.
As for Spectacular, that finished last year baby.:cwink:

You know, I was wondering how long it would take for that joke to come up, and took a hell of a lot longer than I thought, lol.

Preach it, man. DD, Punisher MAX, and Runaways are the best Marvel books out there. If you're not reading them, you suck. There. I said it.

As for me, 2007 will be great to me because of,well, Spider-Man 3.

I have been reading the comic since 1991, and I've been through ups and downs....but mostly downs. We get gems here and there like Spider-Man: Blue or the first 50 issues or so of USM, but we've had to endure some of the WORST stories in history. Clone Saga (no offense Reilly-fans), Sins Past, and The Other. We've got storylines that make "Superman Red/Superman Blue" look like "Dark Knight Returns".

However, I've yet to be dissappointed with the Spider-Man films. They're great films, and they do a decent job of staying faithful to the source material.

My praising of Raimi and company aside, I also look forward to a couple of events in the new year. I love Civil War, and I'm curious as to how it will end. I'm hoping it's ending will be decisive, and we won't get any loose ends that will eventually come back around for "Civil War 2". Anyone else remember a "War" story from the 80's that spawned an incredibly inferior sequel? Anyone?

I'm also looking forward to the new Loeb/Campbell miniseries. I'm trying not to get my hopes too high, but I can't help myself, sometimes. SM: Blue was phenomenol, and J. Scott draws one bad-ass Spider-Man. If the "Q" can stay out of this one, we should get a solid book with some actual character-based storied that don't rely on lame shock tactics and "shake-ups".

All in all, I agree with what Cyclops said:

I've been fighting the urge to make that joke for about 2 months now...ever since the Spidey 3 trailer debuted...

Now....now I can finally move on.

To those about to rock...I salute you.

Good points. I've totally given up on buying Marvel comics (thoug I look through them to stay current). IMO, it's not just Spider-man who is being raked over the coals by JQ and Co.
The whole Marvel Universe has gone to hell.
My god, what they've done to Reed freaking Richard, and Iron man,...turning them into worst bad guys than Dr. Doom.
And the inconsistency as well as the lack of continuity makes it impossible for me to enjoy Marvel right now.
The movies have been great, so I'm hoping SM3 will keep up that tradition.
As for the game Ultimate alliance, I plan to pick it up ONLY because they put Spider-man as the lead character on ads and on the cover.

it's all really depressing.

You know it's amazing how similar mine and your opinions are sometimes, and it's even weirder is that 1991 is the same year I bought my 1st own single issue of ASM.

I really do think there are loads of great Marvel titles, I really feel that Civil War had rejuvinated most comics, I believe very few are suffering. Cap rules, Avengers is a lot better, Hulk is good, AXM, there's qite a big list.
