i just read an article where a writer said that social secuirty was going bankrupt and will be by 2042, is that true? is anyone freaked out?

Yeah that's the way it's going to be if things are the way they are. Even though Bush's plan wasn't the best way to reform the system, the Democrats refusal to change a thing about social security is really hurting reform efforts.

IMO, they should just get rid of it. It's a relic of the New Deal.

I heard that it'd be gone before '42. There's no way the system is going to survive and I agree with Hippie Hunter: we need to just wipe it out now; we could do better.

more than likely, so i urge you to write your local congressman and support euthanasia, its our only hope...

or plan for your own retirement early, its called a Roth Ira, look into it.

Are the social security systems in other countries projected to go bankrupt as well in the future?

hipps, a lot of old people depend on social security and medicare when they become disabled or too old to work. Your day and mine are coming soon, and we are going to need it. People need serious health insurance/medications in their 40s and even their 30s these days..

we're all screwed . you cant trust this government and rely on people for good health care in most cases

If you are going to get rid of SS, then you need to bring in some form of Universal health care, so these people can work. While being able to get there health benefits.

The baby boomer generation thinks they will retire with comfort, but i can imagine there will be nothing for them..or atleast for most.

First of all, old people are just going to die soon anyways. Without it, they'll just die quicker and the world will be better for it. I hate old people.

Okay, I'm just kidding so I'll take a moment to be serious.

Social Security was designed in the for disabled people in the Great Depression. Not for freaking old people. The social security system was designed for old people to get it for about 5 - 10 years until they died, or not at all because they already died. So they didn't have to worry since it was the 30's and 40's.

However, thanks to the miracles of medical science, the life expectancy has gone up. Plus World War II vets got really, really horny causing the population to boom. Now we're going to have a lot of people who are going to receive it for 20+ years. The system was not designed for that.

Now, I want you to think when you and me get old. Imagine how much the life expectancy will go up in 30 - 40 years. Imagine how many people will be receiving it. It'll get even freaking worse.

Social Security has downright become a literal burden of the government. It was designed as a quick solution in the 1930's and did not have enough foresight in today's and tommorrow's ages. It's become nothing more than a relic of the New Deal. Keeping it will cause more problems than solving them. And the Democrats refusal to do any reform to the system is hurting it even worse.

In my opinion, it should be reformed drastically. Have it the way it currently is for the selfish Baby Boomer generation, people born up until 1964. Cut the system off for the rest. This nation cannot handle paying for people beyond the Baby Boomers.

The baby boomer generation is a very selfish generation. Everything was pretty much handed to them and they still expect things to be handed to them (such as Social Security and Medicaid). Even my baby boomer college professor agrees with this accessment.

Frankly, they kinda ruined it for the rest of Americans.

I don't know about you, but the more I learn about the 60's the more I realise that is where America started going down hill.

With the exception of the Civil Rights movement (which is just logical. why black people even needed to raise such fuss is an embarrasement to this country) & Feminism ( which has gone way off track!). Every thing else was just BS!
