So, what Christmas traditions do you take part in?

Brunch at my sisters on Christmas day. Once my son starts to become aware of all this holiday jazz, like in the next 6 months, I'll establish some kind of traditions with him.

Like many families, I celebrate with the annual family war where we all hate each other and swear never to talk to each other again.

Nah not this year actually. We're going to the other side of the family tree. The sane side.

Also, love the traditional Christmas specials on the telly :woot:

Every year we go out into the woods and pick our tree and cut it down ourselves. Then we drag it back to the car and when we decorate our tree at home we have a box of Ganong chocolate and have X-mas music playing in the background.

As for Christmas Eve we always have Christmas dinner with my in-laws and we open our presents there at midnight.

On Christmas morning when the kids wake up they can open their Christmas stockings but nothing else, while I cook a huge breakfast. Once we are done then we each open a present in turn until all the presents are open.

I have also done a few scavenger hunts, where they find something big. As in one year I had them go around the whole house until they found a dvd to announce that we are going to Disney World.

All of this sounds very nice. You're very lucky.

... my traditions? Just a little animal sacrifice to a few pagan gods.

I watch Bad Santa sometime every year in December, and I always make sure to listen to Donny Hathaway's "This Christmas" at least once in December.

..I try to survive the massive onslaught of terrifying Christmas music..

Watching this Super Mario World episode. I've been doing it since it came out in 1991, and I even got my sister in on it. We know the ****ing thing word for word, sad as it is.

My family has two traditions that we've done forever, the first is that we watch Ben Hur, the second is that at the very end of the day, my dad reads the Christmas Chapter from Little House on the Prairie

I'm not a big fan of Christmas, but I do spend time with the family. Actually, this year I've started a Christmas movie festival. One movie a day for the month of December.

Yeah, I'm so f*****g tired of hearing songs like Last Christmas (I really hate that song) every time you go to a bar/pub etc during this season.

When it comes to traditions, nowadays it's not like in the 70s-80s when my grandparents were alive. Back then we were a huge crowd (including my cousins and their parents) at Christmas Eve and the familys took turns having the dinner etc.

The last years it's usually been me, my brother's family and my parents. This year we will be celebrating Christmas at my brother's new house, probably with my sister in law's parents and brother too (and her kids). I'm actually looking forward to that.

First comes "The Santa Claus Parade"
- when my boy was younger we went to the Markham one but now it's the BIG one in downtown Toronto

Then there is "The Decorating of the Tree".
- set up CD player in the front room
- drag Christmas storage boxes upstairs from basement
- get coffee
- get out Christmas music CD's and insert first in player and start it playing
- assembling and decoration of tree (this takes a few hours)

Next "Caroling"
- meet with sister(s) and friend(s) at Kennedy Subway Station
- start singing in the subway station and while riding the train all the way downtown (short intemission during change over of trains at Bloor-Yonge)
- sing all the way up and out to the Christmas window display at the Bay on Queen St
- sing our way back to the Eaton Centre and have late lunch / early dinner at Mr. Green Jeans (I always get their Mushroom Cheddar Chowder)
- sing our way back onto the Subway and all the way back to Kennedy Station

Get to open 1 gift on Christmas Eve

Open all the other gifts on Christmas day.

I take part in a lot of the typical traditions, but one I enjoy by myself is:

- Finish decorating outside
- Get drunk on beer and peppermint schnapps
- Come inside and watch Christmas Vacation
- Laugh my ass off like its the first time seeing the movie

My 2 siblings and I buy a new decoration every year with my Dad. We did it with Mum today and my Dad's demanding we go out and buy some with him to keep tradition.

i eat loads of food and drink loads of alcohol. that's about it.

^So basically Tuesday.

Years ago I had asked my parents for the movie Die Hard for Christmas. Well, I didn't get it that year. But to my surprise, the movie was on TV that day. The following year I asked for it again and they had bought it for me. Well every Christmas Day since then, I actually sit down and watch the movie. This has been going on for like 6 years now.

What the heck is the point of this Elf on a Shelf thing I see so many people talking about?

Just looked it up on Google, & it's basically a lame ploy that I suppose parents use by moving the figure around the house to tell kids Santa is "watching", using the Elf as his eyes.

Is that what it's for? I had seen people taking pictures of it in a cookie jar, watching TV and doing the laundry. I didn't get it
