Violent video games have been getting lots of flak over the years, but with this news, the flak may trickle over to competitive sport games. FIFA Soccer games may not be bloody, verbally clean, and free of rioting hooligans, but a 16-year-old boy stabbed his own dad on the neck after the two got into an argument about soccer strategies in FIFA 2009 on the PS3.
The incident, as reported by Reuters, began when the teen's father, 46, offered advice on how to improve his son's game. The discussion erupted into an argument, after which the dad turned the TV off because of the way his son, Mario, acted. In response, the teen grabbed a knife from the kitchen and thrusts it into his dad's neck.
After the stabbing, the 16-year-old went back to the kitchen and cleaned the bloody knife in front of his mother, who didn't know what was happening until she saw her husband staggering into the room clutching his neck. "I saw Mario come back into the room, he seemed calm, he went to the sink and I noticed him washing a knife," the mom told the local newspaper. "Then my husband came into the room with a hand round his neck, dripping blood".
"Mario is obsessed. Hes forever playing on his PlayStation, and we bought him FIFA 2009 because we didnt want him playing violent games," she added. After the incident, Mario shut himself in his room, then made no attempt to resist arrest when the police came in.
On the plus side, Fifa 2010 is pretty good.
