Sony Announcenemt, March 31st

Well, I'd prefer if it were PS3 related just cause Sony should definitely focus on current gen. Or maybe they're unveiling the new "PSP Slide" I heard about in rumors.

Anyway, we'll see.

I think it could be either the PS2 price drop, FW 2.70 announcement, or a very very slim chance of a PS3 price cut. If it is the PS2, I wonder if this means the end is near for it. It has slowed down in sales lately. Perhaps it's time to put the old girl to pasture.

PlayStation 2 Will Be Available for Under $100

Hi everyone, the last time you heard from me, I talked about the huge milestone that PlayStation 2 achieved – reaching 50 million units sold in North America. Today I’m excited to talk about another milestone in PlayStation 2’s lifespan. For the first time ever, PlayStation 2 will be offered at a price point under $100 (that’s $99.99 MSRP, to be exact), starting April 1!

Why is this so significant? Well most importantly, this new price means that more people than ever will be able to join in on the fun that so many of you PlayStation 2 owners have been enjoying for years, which means new families will become part of the platform’s record-breaking install base. With this new price, we intend to introduce a new generation of consumers – some of whom weren’t even alive when the system was first introduced in 2000 – to the immense entertainment value offered by PlayStation 2.

In the gaming industry, the typical lifecycle for a console is around five years, but because we build each of our platforms for a large and diverse consumer base, we design our platforms differently. With the original PlayStation and now PlayStation 2, we’ve proven that consumers can rely on our platforms for their gaming and entertainment needs for at least a decade. This speaks to the technology and features that were packed into PlayStation 2 from the beginning, as well as to the ongoing support the platform enjoys from the publishing and retail communities and, well, all of you fans.

PlayStation 2’s unmatched gaming library will grow to nearly 1,900 titles from both our first-party studios and publishing partners this year, with a particular focus on the social and sports genres that are so popular with the emerging family demographic. This will include games such as MLB ’09, Ghostbusters: The Video Game, Guitar Hero Metallica and MotorStorm: Arctic Edge…not to mention the 250 titles that have achieved “Greatest Hits” status. With all of that content, PlayStation 2 is a great option for families looking for ways to share their entertainment experiences together; they can rock out to Rock Band, test their trivia knowledge with Buzz!, or simply use the PlayStation 2 as their DVD or CD player.

So to everyone who’s enjoyed PlayStation 2 over the years, thanks for your continued support. And to those who will now be joining the PlayStation family, welcome!

Wow this was way overhyped i was expecting something more this generation
i hope this is a April Fools Joke

A major announcement indeed, dropping the price of their dead console by $30. Sure it's great that people can still buy new PS2 games, but if you're just getting a system now and it's a PS2, something tells me you don't really care about any of the new games.

I wouldn't call it dead. In Feb 09 the PS2 sold 131,000 consoles, whereas the PS3 sold 276,000. The PS2 is still generating numbers for Sony. I think the idea is that by bringing new customers to the PS2 they will eventually in the future get them as PS3 customers.

Yeah, dead is not a word to really describe the PS2 at all actually.

Hey, If this is real I needed a new ps2 anyway. However, I really want the original PS2. The small one is ok, but the Original is the one I've always trusted.

The PS2 definetly isnt dead and Sony is still putting out games for it. Probably biggest upcoming release is Motorstorm: Arctic Edge this summer

The Slim is hella reliable. I definitely recommend it.

It's an almost ten year old system, it needs to be put down, how do you PS3 owners feel about Sony's "big" March announcement being a $30 price drop on their older system. Meaning they obviously hope people will buy that over the PS3.

It simply means that Sony continues to support its entire fanbase.

As opposed to rolling out new technology and abandoning their older users, Sony continues to give PS2 users more bang for their buck.

The Xbox and GC lasted for 4 years of support and then their users were forced to upgrade. The PS2 is heading into its 9th year of support. And people still laugh when Sony says the PS3 will be supported for 10 years.

With the PS3 losing its backward compatability capabilities, this at least gives gamers an alternative way to replay some PS2 favourites.

It was never hyped as a "big" announcement. The internet sites hyped it up without even having the slightest idea what it was about. Anybody disappointed or angry with Sony need to keep this in mind.

I didn't feel like I was forced to buy a 360. There were still several games I wanted to play on the Xbox, and I have since purchased those. In fact, I didn't even get a 360 until November '07, when there were more 360 games I wanted to play.

As for the PS2, the last game I've bought for it was the Metal Slug Anthology. A solid majority of the games that have come out for it are last-gen ports of current gen titles.

Why would they discontinue a product that STILL makes money for them. PS2 sales have slowed down but they still sell fairly well especially after 10 years. Sony would be incredibly stupid to abandon it for this reason. If anything the money that Sony makes on the PS2 helps them fund their PS3 projects. Sony has thrown alot of money and resources into its first party studios and those have pushed out some amazing titles like Uncharted and Killzone 2. Im sure the PS2 revenue has been helping to make those and other games possible

What Sony really needs to do is what Microsoft did with the Xbox, drop the PS2 and bring down the price of the PS3.
And exactly why would they do that? Get rid of something that makes them money and lose even more money on a product causes them to lose money with each sale. Sony's fiscal losses would be even greater. Business 101 tells them that this would be one of the worst decisions they could make

From a bussiness standpoint, yes. But how many PS2 games come out now? Not much.

and there doesnt need to be. The PS2 has a HUGE library. Im betting alot of people that do get one are doing it to catch up on stuff they missed out on. Besides it still pushes out new games to keep people interested, especially those who havent been able to make the jump yet to the PS3. Thanks to the PSP, its library further gets expanded since its fairly easy for developers to port between teh 2 platforms

I'm catching up on old titles when I get mine, I need dark cloud 2.

Hells yeah, I'm going to play some of the shin megami tensei games eventually. Those, SotC, PoP 1-3, SH 3-4, and Okami are most of the games I still need to experience on the PS2.

Ok, So I got my Satin Silver ps2 and 5 five games yesterday. In the end i'm happy, but it got me thinking of rebuying another old system. The GBA SP.
