Space and Astronomy Megathread (MERGED) - Part 1

It’s around the last week in December/first week in January (ish) that sunrises in the northern latitudes — which had been getting progressively later for months — reverse direction and start happening earlier.

The reason that earliest sunset and latest sunrise don’t happen on the winter solstice (~ December 21) is a tad technical.


But the short explanation is that the orbital mechanics (including axial tilt of the Earth, etc.) and our clocks/calendars don’t quite line up.
